Untermhaus has been a district of Gera since 1919 .
location
Untermhaus is located northwest of the city center on the White Elster . The town center is located on the narrow strip between the left bank of the river and the wooded slopes of the Gera city forest .
history
Untermhaus was built as a craftsmen's settlement under the medieval castle, which later became known as Osterstein . The place owes its name to this location. In 1850 it was combined with the northern settlement of Gries to form one municipality, with the spelling Untermhaus being made binding compared to the previously more widespread variant Unterhaus .
During the 19th century, Untermhaus quickly took on the appearance of a small town. In 1897, Cuba , located to the right of the Elster, was incorporated, which was subsequently given the colloquial name Neu-Untermhaus . On January 1, 1919, the community of Untermhaus with 7,293 inhabitants was incorporated into Gera.
In October 1958, the Gera city council had plans to change the name of the district, which in the socialist sense was too reminiscent of feudal rule. The names Elstervorstadt , Zweibrückenvorstadt and Freiheit were up for debate . However, due to the low level of acceptance in the population, these plans were not pursued any further.
Attractions
Untermhaus owes a large number of historical buildings to its location directly at the princely residence of the Reussians . The former Osterstein Castle, which was bombed out at the end of the Second World War and the ruins of which were largely demolished in 1963, is still a popular destination today. The historic town center with the Marienkirche , the Otto-Dix-Haus , which opened in 1991, and the Untermhäuser bridge are among the most famous photo motifs in Gera.
In the southeast of the district, in the direction of the city center, is the kitchen garden with the orangery and the stages of the city of Gera . This area was extensively renovated in the course of the Federal Horticultural Show in 2007 . The Hofwiesenpark , one of the main exhibition areas of the Federal Garden Show, adjoins the district to the south.
politics
When the new main statute of the city of Gera came into force on June 1, 2014, a district constitution was introduced for Untermhaus , so the district will have its own district council and a district mayor in the future .
Transport links
The embankment with the Gera main station leads past Untermhaus to the east and separates it from the city center. Landesstrasse 1070, which leads through the municipality of Kraftsdorf to Hermsdorf , runs through the district .
Since November 2006 Untermhaus has been connected to the Gera tram network - as it was from 1892 to 1968 . The " Stadtbahnbrücke " connects the western part of Untermhaus with the tram turning loop on the opposite side of the Elster. Bus line 20 runs purely as a tram feeder via Rubitz to the municipality of Kraftsdorf in the district of Greiz .
With two regional bus routes from RVG Regionalverkehr Gera / Land , Untermhaus is directly connected to Bad Köstritz , Hermsdorf and Eisenberg . The RVG owns its depot at the tram turning loop.
