The handball Bundesliga 1977/78 was the first of the single-track seasons and the twelfth season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 10, 1977 and ended with the last game day on May 6, 1978.

14 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the 26th matchday was German champions 1978. Promoted to the new season were the police SV Hannover and the TV 1893 Neuhausen . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the fourth time.

At the beginning of the season, TuS Nettelstedt was at the top of the table. On the third match day, TV Großwallstadt took the lead, which could be defended until the sixth match day. The new front runner was then VfL Gummersbach , who secured the autumn championship with 23: 3 points after the 13th matchday . The team also got off to a strong start in the second half of the season and had a 4-point lead over pursuers TV Großwallstadt, but at the end of the season their strength dropped noticeably. On the 25th matchday, VfL Gummersbach was only one point ahead of TV Großwallstadt. The decision about the German championship was made on the last day of the match, when both teams met. German champions in 1978 were the team from TV Großwallstadt for the first time in the club's history, defeating VfL Gummersbach, who had been leading for almost the entire season, in the final.

The police SV Hannover , SG Dietzenbach , TuS Derschlag 1881 and TV 1893 Neuhausen had to relegate from the handball Bundesliga to the regional leagues .

A total of 6151 goals were scored in 182 games (average 33.8 per game). There were 127 home wins, 14 draws and 41 away wins. VfL Gummersbach recorded the highest home win on the third matchday with 27:15 against TSV Milbertshofen. The highest away win was also achieved by VfL Gummersbach on matchday eight with 14:24 at SG Dietzenbach. The game with the highest number of goals took place on the 19th match day between TV Großwallstadt and OSC 04 Rheinhausen and ended 32:22. That was 20 goals more than the overall average. Three clubs were at the top of the table during the season: TuS Nettelstedt (2 ×), TV Großwallstadt (4 ×) and VfL Gummersbach (20 ×). The top scorer was the Yugoslav Đorđe Lavrnić from TuS Derschlag 1881 with 173 goals scored .

The DHB Cup, which was played for the fourth time, was won by the VfL Gummersbach team.

VfL Gummersbach also secured the European Cup Winners' Cup . In addition, many Bundesliga players celebrated winning the World Cup in Denmark .

DHB Cup

The team from VfL Gummersbach won the 1978 DHB Cup . In the final game on June 16, 1978, she defeated TV 05/07 Hüttenberg in the Gießen-Ost sports hall in Gießen in front of about 3000 spectators with 14:11.
