Panel discussion with Christopher Clark and Gerd Krumeich at the Göttinger Historikertag 2014

The German Historians' is an average of 3,000 participants one of the largest humanities congresses in Europe .

description

The German Historians' Day takes place every two years at a German-speaking university and gathers specialists, history teachers, students, journalists and those interested in history. The organizer is the Association of Historians of Germany (VHD) in cooperation with the Association of German History Teachers .

A special feature is the interest shown by politics, which is unusual for science conferences. The meetings were already attended by incumbent Chancellors (1978 Helmut Schmidt , 2010 Angela Merkel ), Federal Presidents (1976 Walter Scheel , 1988 Richard von Weizsäcker , 1996 Roman Herzog , 2002 Johannes Rau , 2008 Horst Köhler , 2014 Joachim Gauck ), Bundestag presidents (1990 Rita Süssmuth , 2006 Norbert Lammert , 2018 Wolfgang Schäuble ) and Foreign Ministers (2016 Frank-Walter Steinmeier ).

history

The “First Assembly of German Historians” took place in Munich at Easter 1893 , at which academics and school practitioners protested together against the new Prussian history curriculum from 1892. Thereafter, the Historikertage took place irregularly every one to two years in German (and until 1927 also in Austrian) cities. From 1913 to 1924 and from 1937 to 1949 there was a break due to the two world wars. During the Nazi era, historians met only once in 1937 in Erfurt . The historians' days have been held every two years since 1970. Since 1984, each historians' day has been given a central theme by the organizer. Since 2004, the Hedwig Hintze and Carl Erdmann Prize of the VHD for dissertations and habilitation theses have been awarded at the Historikertage. Partner countries have been appointed since 2012.

The scientific core program of the Historikertage consists of sections, around which an extensive accompanying and supporting program usually spans. Results and key speeches are published in report volumes. A local committee takes care of the organization of the event at the respective university. The historians' committee at the VHD decides on the selection of the sections and the award of the two historian prizes.
