Hotel Zack & Cody (original title: The Suite Life of Zack & Cody ) is an American sitcom that was broadcast on the American Disney Channel from 2005 to 2008 . In Germany, the series ran on October 3, 2005 on the pay-TV station of the same name, Disney Channel, and was also broadcast on free TV on Super RTL from June 3, 2007 . In Austria, the series was broadcast on ORF 1 from 2008 . The production of the series was stopped in 2007.
broadcast
The series is about the identical twins Cody and Zack Martin, who live with their single mother Carey at the Tipton Hotel. Carey is employed there as a singer and is therefore allowed to live with her sons in the 5-star hotel in Boston , Massachusetts . Zack and Cody experience wild adventures in the hotel with their friends Maddie and London. The hotel manager Marion Moseby doesn't like this at all, and so he tries to get rid of the twins. But over the years he grew fond of Zack and Cody.
The series takes place in the same series universe as Hannah Montana , The Wizards of Waverly Place , Jessie , Tripp's rock band , Raven Looks Through , Home at Raven and Just Cory! , so that from time to time there are guest appearances and other points of contact between the series, such as Hannah Montana touring at the Tipton Hotel.
It's a Laugh Productions produced a spin-off for the Disney Channel called Zack & Cody auf Bord (originally: The Suite Life on Deck ). The Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver , Canada served as the exterior of the hotel .
main characters
Zachary "Zack" Martin
Zack is Cody's twin brother ten minutes older. He often causes mischief and always tries to drag his "little" brother into his problems. He usually wears skater clothes and mostly tries to get what he wants. He shows great interest in the female sex and therefore always flirts with Maddie. He's not very good at school and tries various tricks to avoid work. In contrast to Cody, Zack is a little macho when it comes to women, which he probably inherited from his father. This is how he treats his "short-term girlfriends".
Cody Martin
Cody is a genius. But he is not as good at approaching the girls as his brother Zack. Instead of looking, he is more interested in the inner values of girls. When Zack gets into trouble, he always tries to help, and not always with success. He studies regularly for school and is top of the class because he usually only writes A's. He is also usually much more responsible than his brother, but he often lets himself be involved in pranks.
London Leah Tipton
The hotel owner's rich daughter goes to the same school as Maddie and usually does not get good grades, but defeats Maddie at chess. She loves shopping and has a lot of credit cards. She also has a multi-story closet with a mirror that always tells her how great she looks but always says something offensive to Maddie. London Tipton is a parody of the US hotel heiress Paris Hilton and is often portrayed as lazy, naive and simple-minded. Because of her luxury she is rather warped and unworldly. Except for one episode in Zack and Cody, her father is never seen as a complete person on board. He also has a penchant for younger women, whom he marries pretty quickly after they meet. He already had six wives. London is also not a very good singer. Nevertheless, until the third season they let everyone believe that they can, and that's only because their father always produces something when something is up to sing at Tipton. When she is supposed to sing Sharpay at the school performance for the play High School Musical and does not want to embarrass herself in front of her daddy, she asks Maddie, who plays the role of Sharpay in the original High School Musical and sings, to sing for herself; this does it too. London has a lot of hidden talents: she often trains in the sports department and is world chess champion, although she cannot tell the jumpers apart. She has her own web show Yes Super which is produced by Cody and sometimes Maddie. They are also available on the web outside of the series.
Madeline Margaret Genevieve Miranda Catherine "Maddie" Fitzpatrick
Maddie works at the hotel candy stand. She is an all-rounder and, like Cody, only gets good grades in school. However, she goes to a convent school, Our Lady of Eternal Sorrows , to which London is also sent in the second season, but flies down again in the third season. When she sets a goal, she follows it to the end. There is nothing better for Maddie than happy customers, except of course the extra money she makes babysitting. She can calculate faster than her cash register. Zack has a crush on Maddie, but regularly receives rebukes from her because he is several years too young and she is looking for a boyfriend her age. However, she thinks he is special and promised to dance with him at his prom. Maddie is friends with London, but is also their rival in terms of fashion and wealth. Most of the time, the two stick together well. Maddie has many siblings. In one episode she speaks of "brothers and sisters," which suggests that the Fitzpatricks have at least five children. Only her little brother Liam, whom Maddie and her grandma call disgust, appear in the series. In addition, her sister, with whom she previously had to share a room, is moving out.
Marion Moseby
Mr. Moseby (only called Moseby by most of the characters) is the manager of the hotel and is always at the counter with a charming smile. If anything can really drive him crazy, it's Zack and Cody. Because of them, he can never really relax and lean back, because he always has to fear that the ceiling will fall on his head. Mr. Moseby can organize just about anything, which makes him quite popular. As a hotel manager, he is also the only one who London has respect for, as he regularly calls her (rich) father on the phone. For London he is also a kind of father substitute who comforts her when her father does not visit her again. Moseby taught London to drive and the ABC and once went to a father-daughter dance with her.
Carey Marie Martin
Carey is the single mother of Zack and Cody. She is a singer and often had to move with the children until she got a permanent job at Tipton, where she has been working as a singer ever since. She has her hands full with the guys and therefore very little time to relax. Nevertheless, she loves the children and nothing is more important to her than to see them happy. She is also a point of contact for London and Maddie. She is single, but has an admirer, the hotel caretaker, Arwin, who is not her type. Her ex-husband Kurt comes to visit sometimes and then things get even more exhausting for her. Carey also looks surprised and offended when Zack and Cody say something about their appearance in the morning or when the twins talk about their age. Often she gives a good counter-comment or quickly dismisses it.
Minor characters
- Arwin Q. Hawkhauser
is a self-proclaimed scientist who is in love with Carey, whose inventions mostly do not work or only work wrongly. He's also the technician at the Tipton Hotel and a good friend of Zack and Cody. With Cody he takes part in (school) competitions in some episodes, but it always goes wrong because his urge to be too crazy is always exposed and Cody is then disqualified. Arwin's misunderstood genius is usually of great help to the twins Zack and Cody, as they often take advantage of his technical talent for pointless, cheeky pranks. Usually his inventions don't work, but strangely enough, he was able to build a functional (if not smart) robot named Arwinstein. He also built the PU, a kind of teleporter that can move objects into a parallel universe. Zack and Cody were actually able to get into a parallel world using a certain combination.
In the Nintendo DS game "Circle of Spies" his twin brother Darwin is shown. He works for Ilsa, has an eye patch and is angry. But he never appears in the series. Arwin even says he doesn't have a twin brother.
- Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya De La Rosa Ramírez
is a bellhop (the only one who appears on the series) with a Spanish accent, which shows that he is from Latin America . He's also a good friend of Zack, Cody, Maddie and London. His father's name is Diego Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya De La Rosa Ramírez and his mother is Ute. Although he often does not understand Mr. Moseby, he honors him as "a great man". Esteban's origin is a small village in Peru , which is no longer inhabited due to a curse (see The Curse of the Pyramid (I Want My Mummy)). According to his own statement, his grandma was queen. His mother was from the capital of Spain, Madrid . His family had a farm until his uncle drilled a pipeline for the Tiptons, now London's father has taken over the farm. He and his family are Hispanics . Despite his often childish manner, he is a very nice and honest employee. As a pet he has a rooster named Dudley. He thinks he has a great talent and fights for it when Dudley is insulted by the Tipton staff.
- Muriel
is the cleaning lady at the Tipton Hotel. In Zack and Cody's opinion, the only thing she actually cleans is everything that's in the fridge. She has dyed red hair, is quite fat, doesn't like to move around and is a little senile. She is never afraid and is very unreasonable in what she does. It only appears in the first season and in one episode of the third season. After the first season she retires, Zack & Cody bring her back to Tipton in the third season (as a dummy employee), at this time she has blonde hair.
- Patrick
is the manager of the hotel restaurant. He also seems to be involved in constant conflicts with his co-workers, especially Maddie and Esteban, which are mostly about his advantage.
- Skippy
is the fourth best security guard and replacement at reception. It is often quite blown and you can tell that it comes from the country.
- Norman
is the doorman of the hotel and stands at the front door in every episode. He rarely speaks, if at all, but is still a helpful buddy to Zack and Cody.
- Irene
fulfills the function of concierge . She can also be seen in (almost) every episode, but is rarely seen in her actual work. She hardly ever speaks and most of the time she sits in her seat.
- Nia
is Mr. Moseby's niece and visits him during the summer vacation. She has visited many other relatives as her parents hope that her relatives can teach her reason as she is very irritable and violent. When the holidays are over, she decides to stay in Boston all year round and goes to a state middle school with Zack, Cody, Maddie and London. Moseby only uses them at the candy stand.
- Millicents
is a teenager and is hired to replace Maddie during the summer vacation but stays later. She is really very scared and is terrified of everything. Nia gives her the nickname "Squirrel" because of her overbite.
- Ilsa Schnitzelhubermeier Heaven Van Helsing the Kepelugerhoffer
was originally the hotel inspector of the Tiptons. She briefly took over the management of the Tipton Hotel in Boston, but was then fired. She has a large birthmark on her face with a hair growing out of it. Some time later she becomes the manager of the St. Mark Hotel, just across from Tipton. Since then, at the latest, Moseby and Ilsa have been very enemies. She also got married and is now called Ilsa Schnitzelhubermeier Heifen Van Helsing de Keppellubahora.
In the Nintendo DS game “Circle of Spies” she hires a magician and spies to steal an invention by Arwin. The "PLOT" is a huge device that is supposed to lure tourists from Tipton to St. Mark.
- bob
is the friend of Zack and Cody. He is dyslexic and once inadvertently gave Zack the idea to pretend to be one. He likes to visit Zack and Cody as Norman the doorman always calls him "Sir".
- Janice and Jessica
are twins, like Zack and Cody, and meet the other pair of twins for the first time when a twin meeting is held at Tipton. Both are extremely pretty and speak with an English accent.
- Max
is a very good dancer and also good friends with Zack and Cody. At the beginning of the 1st season she is often referred to as a boy because of her behavior, her appearance (she hides her long hair under a cap) and her name. She plays on the same basketball team as the two of them, at least for the first season. However, in one episode there is also a kiss between Max and Zack, which of course both of them do not like at all. From the second season, however, they are friends.
- Tapeworm
is Max's best friend. Both were underdogs in the first season. He got his name from eating 20 hot dogs in less than two minutes. Otherwise, tapeworm is more of a “follower” who confirms and repeats everything Max says. It only appears in the first season.
- Agnes
is very undecided about love. She first falls in love with Cody and then with Zack again. The two of them don't like her, however, because she probably doesn't correspond to her ideal of beauty and is very intrusive. Agnes later loses interest in the two brothers.
- Corrie
is a school friend of Mary and Maddie. She is an incredible London Tipton fan and always has seizures when London is around. Corrie even wanted to name a cat after her and always wants to do everything with her.
- Barbara Simka Brownstein
is Cody's smart friend. She wears glasses, has black hair, knows karate and is Jewish.
- Sister Dominique
is a nun in the school of Maddie, London and Corrie. She always blames the other (mostly Maddie) for the things that London has done, because she comes in at the right time while London is not doing anything, or because of God's messages, blaming the others because the real culprit doesn't do everything did wrong.

Spin-off
The Disney Channel had produced a spin-off of the series from 2008 to 2011 under the title Zack & Cody am Bord (original title: The Suite Life on Deck ) . Zack, Cody, London and Mr. Moseby live on a Tipton cruise ship, the SS Tipton. Maddie, Carey, Esteban and Arwin only have guest appearances in the spin-off.
Running gags
Running gags appear from time to time in the series.
- London's Yes, Super (“Yay Me”) and Yes, London (then she mostly claps and hops around) and her I am rich .
- Carey's earlier stories, mostly I once had a boyfriend… . The respective listener then groans after this part of the sentence.
- Esteban's full name (Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya De La Rosa Ramírez): He always speaks it when he commits a courageous act, but it is almost always interrupted by someone, so he stops immediately.
- When something embarrassing happens to Mr. Moseby, a guest can be seen running away in negative astonishment.
- Muriel often says in season 1, "At least I don't clean it up."
