The IIHF Federation Cup in 1994 was the first edition of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition and found parallel to the European Cup instead. It was held between November 11th and December 29th, 1994. A total of 13 teams from twelve exclusively Eastern European countries took part, with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as the only country with two participants. Four teams alone came from the states of the former Yugoslavia .

While the host of the final tournament, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , was seeded, the three other participants were determined in qualifying tournaments. The first-time winner of the cup was Salawat Julajew Ufa from Russia, who prevailed in the final against the Czech participant HC Pardubice .

Preliminary round

The three preliminary round tournaments took place on November 11 and 12, 1994 in Oświęcim , Poprad and Belgrade . Four teams played per tournament. The winner of a tournament was given one of the three free starting places in the final tournament. To do this, he had to victoriously play both the semi-finals and the finals of the tournament.

Group A

In Group A, which was played in Oświęcim, Poland , Salawat Julajew Ufa from Russia prevailed in an impressive manner. They defeated both Croatian representative KHL Medveščak Zagreb 21-1 in the semifinals and tournament host KS Unia Oświęcim , who had just beat Alba Volán Székesfehérvár the day before , 10-2 in the final. Ufa thus secured the right to participate in the final round.

Group B

The group B tournament held in Poprad , Slovakia saw the Czech team from HC Pardubice reach the final round. After a clear 12-2 win over Politechnik Kiev , they faced host ŠKP PS Poprad in the final , who had prevailed 20-1 against SC Miercurea Ciuc . In a hard-fought final, which was decided in extra time , Pardubice was able to win 5: 4.

Group C

Group C games were held in Belgrade . In addition to HK Bulat Temirtau and HK Lewski Sofia , two teams from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia played in the tournament: HK Partizan Belgrade and HK Vojvodina Novi Sad . The final reached Temirtau and Belgrade, which surprisingly prevailed 4-2 against the Kazakhs.

Final round

The final round tournament took place on December 28 and 29, 1994 in Ljubljana , Slovenia . In addition to the host HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , the three preliminary round winners of groups A, B and C were also qualified.

In the semifinals, the first met HC Pardubice to HK Partizan and HDD Olimpija Ljubljana on Salavat Yulaev Ufa . In both duels, the favorites from Pardubice and Ufa prevailed confidently and made it into the final. There the Russians were able to secure the first ever Cup with a 4-1 victory. Third place went to the hosts from Ljubljana.
