The first movie adaptation about the superhero team of the DC Comics publishing house was shown in German-speaking cinemas from November 16, 2017.

A new version of the film in its original form, also known as Snyder's Cut, is slated for release in 2021 on the streaming service HBO Max under the title Zack Snyder's Justice League . There will be a number of changes to the theatrical version, including the staff . The new version could appear as a four-hour film or a six-part series.

action

After Superman's death in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , the world mourns him. At the same time, on Themyscira, the island where the Amazons live, the villain Steppenwolf returns to earth with an army of parademons. He had tried to conquer the world thousands of years ago, but failed against an alliance of Olympic gods , Amazons, humans, Atlanteans and Green Lanterns . To prevent his return, three mother boxes were distributed on earth: one went into the hands of the Amazons, one to the Atlanteans and the last one was given to the people. Steppenwolf would only be able to conquer the earth with their combined strength. During his attack on Themyscira, Steppenwolf manages to take control of the mother box of the Amazons and a little later that of the Atlanteans. Only the mother box of the people, which is now guarded by the STAR Labs organization, cannot be found for him.

At the same time, Batman tries to assemble a team of superheroes to defeat Steppenwolf again. He successively recruits Wonder Woman , The Flash , Aquaman and finally Cyborg . Together they manage to find the last mother box. Batman decides to use the mother box's energy to revive Superman's . The resuscitation is successful, however, Superman has lost his memories and is fighting the Justice League. He recognizes Batman, who challenged him shortly before his death, and attacks him. He can save himself by bringing in Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane . With the help of Lois, Superman's memories are slowly coming back. So that he can relax, Lois and Superman retreat to their former home in the country.

Since the last mother box is now unguarded, Steppenwolf manages to take it easily. In possession of all three mother boxes, he wants to combine them in order to use all of their energy. However, the superhero group manages to separate the boxes and thus defeat Steppenwolf. When his plan is thwarted, Steppenwolf himself is seized with fear, whereupon he is attacked by his own parademons. The parademons disappear through an emerging wormhole .

After the fight, Batman decides to let the group exist and even recruit more superheroes. In a post-credit scene , Lex Luthor escaped  from prison and recruited the bounty hunter Deathstroke to form a league of super villains of their own.

production

Justice League: Mortal

As early as 2007 there were plans for a film with a budget of 220 to 250 million US dollars, which should come to the cinemas in 2009 under the title Justice League: Mortal ( German  Justice League: Mortal ). However, in November 2007 the scriptwriters were on strike for three months as a result of the Hollywood writers' strike, and work was delayed for a further six months due to the search for suitable locations and suitable cast. Finally, DC Comics and Warner Bros. celebrated great financial success with the film The Dark Knight in 2008 and discontinued the film Justice League: Mortal for the time being to focus on films about individual characters. Between the release of The Dark Knight and the announcement of Justice League , Warner Bros. released the films Watchmen , Jonah Hex , Green Lantern , The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel, among others . With the announcement of Justice League , Justice League: Mortal is finally considered a failed project. The director would by George Miller to be performed and Superman had by DJ Cotrona , Batman by Armie Hammer , Wonder Woman by Megan Gale , The Flash by Adam Brody , Green Lantern by Common and Aquaman by Santiago Cabrera to be embodied.

In addition to a full cast, the sets and costumes were already in production. The film would have appeared before Marvel's The Avengers , which Justice League is often compared to. The script was written by Michele and Kiernan Mulroney and was given to Warner Bros. in June 2007 . The script was later published. Snyder said he drew a lot of inspiration from comic book artist Jack Kirby into Justice League .

Emergence

Zack Snyder, Director of Justice League

In August 2012, after competitor Marvel had a financial success with the film Marvel's The Avengers , which is about a team of superheroes, and while the film Man of Steel (film) , the first film of the DC Extended Universe, was still in production , commissioned Warner Bros. Will Beall to write a screenplay for a Justice League film. On April 11, 2013, Jeff Robinov, chairman of Warner Bros. confirmed that there will be little references to characters outside of the DC universe in Man of Steel and that there will be other DC characters in the universe in which Man of Steel is set Universe, so that a Justice League film would be possible as a sequel. Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel and later Justice League , also confirmed in the same month that there would be references to other characters from the DC universe in Man of Steel . However, it became known that Christopher Nolan , director of the Batman films Batman Begins , The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises and producer of the film Man of Steel , would not be involved in a possible production of a Justice League film. Robinov said that even without Nolan, a Justice League film would be produced. He also announced that Man of Steel will also set the tone for the DC Extended Universe films . He also confirmed that the universe was independent of Nolan's film trilogy, even though he was initially involved in the DC Extended Universe . Prior to the appearance of Man of Steel , David S. Goyer confirmed that it was the intention of Man of Steel that other superheroes can also live in the film universe. However, it is only a possible option that these come together as the Justice League .

With the release of Man of Steel , Goyer, who signed a pre-contract for three films, was hired to write a sequel as well as a screenplay for the Justice League . The sequel later turned out to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , in which figures like Henry Cavill as Superman , Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman already appear from the later Justice League. The Batman in the DC Extended Universe is not the same character as in Nolan's film trilogy, but represents a reboot version of that character. According to Goyer, the script version that Beall has already written has been completely discarded.

In April 2014, Zack Snyder, who was next to Man of Steel in the director's chair for the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , was confirmed as director. The film is being produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder , while Benjamin Melniker , Michael E. Uslan , Wesley Coller , David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns are executive producers. The following July, Warner Bros. announced that Chris Terrio would proofread Goyer's script. Almost three months later, Warner Bros. announced that the Justice League filming was planned as a two-part series: The first part is to be released as the fifth film in the DC Extended Universe on November 17, 2017; the second part is to follow on June 14, 2019 after further adaptations from the film universe. Snyder is expected to direct both films. On July 3, 2015, Warner Bros. confirmed that the completed screenplay for Justice League was now ready.

When filming began on April 11, 2016, it was announced that Fabian Wagner was the cameraman for the film. In May 2016, Ben Affleck was brought in as Executive Producer for the film. After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to achieve the hoped-for success, Warner Bros. announced in the same month that Geoff Johns and Jon Berg were producing the film. The following month, Johns announced that the first film about the Justice League in DC Extended Universe with Justice League titled. The film was previously known as Justice League Part One and The Justice League Part One , respectively . Compared to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Justice League has been described as a brighter and easier film.

occupation

When Justice League was officially announced on October 14, 2014, it was confirmed that Henry Cavill will return to their roles as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman . In January 2014, the film magazine Variety published an article stating that Gal Gadot, who signed a contract for Wonder Woman for three films, will also appear as the Amazon Princess in the film about the Justice League . At the time, it was not yet known that the Justice League film would be a two - parter. For Cavill, Affleck and Gadot, Justice League is already the third appearance in their roles in the DC Extended Universe : Cavill played Superman in Man of Steel in 2013 , Affleck played Batman in the 2016 film Suicide Squad and Gadot played Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman , also called Wonder Woman Film released five months before Justice League . In addition, all three actors impersonated their characters in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice .

On July 25, 2014, the film website Deadline.com wrote that Warner Bros. was planning to play Jason Momoa in Justice League Aquaman . In October 2014, Momoa confirmed that he would appear in Justice League . Also, it was Ray Fisher as a cyborg in both Justice League confirmed films. He already had a guest appearance in that role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . In November 2014, it was confirmed that Ezra Miller will play the character Barry Allen aka The Flash in the two-parter . In March 2016, JK Simmons was added to the cast. He takes on the role of police officer James Gordon. In the following two months, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg confirmed their return in their roles as butler Alfred Pennyworth and villain Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , respectively . In addition, Willem Dafoe takes on the role of police officer Vulko. Together with Simmons both accumulated already in the Spider-Man trilogy experience in comic book adaptations.

Zack Snyder announced in an interview that Metallo was planned as a villain for the film. He also announced that villain Brainiac was planned for Justice League . He said that you couldn't do another alien invasion like in the movie Man of Steel . In June 2016, Deborah Snyder confirmed that Steppenwolf , who has a guest appearance on the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , will be the movie's main villain.

Filming

Initially, filming was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016 following the end of the filming of Wonder Woman , which was due to be released five months before Justice League . In February 2016, the start of shooting was set for April 11th. The film was to be shot in Leavesden's Warner Bros. Studios in the south-east of England , in various locations around London and in Iceland . In London, the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden were used as the filming location.

The Batmobile was slightly modified and upgraded for the shoot compared to Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , where the vehicle is damaged. In June 2016 journalists were invited to the film studio to watch the filming. JK Simmons was also on set for the first time as Commissioner Gordon.

Filming in Iceland ended in mid-October 2016.

As it became known at the end of May 2017, Joss Whedon is to accompany the post-production of the film, as director Zack Snyder retired for family reasons. Whedon has already written additional movie scenes that he is also supposed to direct. His increasing involvement is reflected in his additional co-author credit. In August 2017, Whedon officially became part of the project.

The re-shoots in London and Los Angeles, directed by Whedon, cost $ 25 million and took around two months. Both metrics can be considered unusual in terms of their scope.

marketing

On June 21, 2016, Warner Bros. and DC Comics released the official movie logo. At the same time an official short description of the film was announced. A concept image was released a week later. The first trailer for Justice League was released at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2016 . The film premiered in Los Angeles on November 13, 2017.

Grossing results

The film grossed approximately $ 657.9 million worldwide, including about 229 million in the United States.

reception

Andreas Platthaus from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung found the film to be mixed, referred to "one-dimensional" heroes and the "moderate" villains, and criticized dramaturgical problems that could be caused by a. originate from the change of scriptwriter from the "aesthetic antipode" Zack Snyder to the "screwball ... and pathos" specialist Joss Whedon . Martin Schwickert from Augsburger Allgemeine called the film “macho and digital riot ... with zero group dynamics ... and wooden, humorless dialogues”, and found it “symptomatic” that Wonder Woman is dimmed down to “psychotic aunt” after the success of her film of the same name . The Berliner Tagesspiegel criticized the all too rare and simple jokes, the one-dimensional character drawing of Cyborg and Aquaman as well as the suboptimal computer technology in the underwater scenes and summarized the dilemma of the plot with a quote from the film: “I can access everything, but I can not bring together. "

Sequels

On October 15, 2014, Warner Bros. announced that the second Justice League film , The Justice League Part Two , would be released on June 14, 2019. Additional films about individual characters from the DC Extended Universe should be released between the release of both films .
