Schrems is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 60.82 square kilometers, 49.16 percent of the area is forested. Schrems is located on Waldviertler Straße B 2.

history

Schrems was founded around 1200, the name Schremelize for the Braunaubach appears for the first time in 1179. It probably comes from the Czech expression for hard rock ( "kremen" ), but it is not known exactly whether the place was named after the river or vice versa.

The brewery in Schrems was mentioned for the first time around 1410, and a regional court already existed in town at that time. On March 20, 1582, Emperor Rudolf II of Vienna awarded the "Marckth Schrembß" a coat of arms. It shows a red shield, which is divided from top left to bottom right by a wide azure stripe, which is covered with two white, gold-crowned snakes, braided in the shape of a button of doubt, with knocked out red tongues, with heads and tails turned from one another. With the elevation to the city on October 23, 1936, the shield of the coat of arms was crowned with a five-pinned white wall crown. The city colors of Schrems are red-blue-red. In the 17th century Schrems received the market rights from Emperor Leopold I and construction of the palace began.

Schrems was hit by disasters several times: in 1680 the plague raged , on May 10, 1772 a major fire broke out. On April 2, 1871, Schrems fell victim to another major fire, which destroyed 40 houses, the school and the church.

On October 23, 1936, Schrems was elevated to town. After the annexation of Austria, the community was taken over by members of the NSDAP . At the end of the Second World War, Schrems had 195 casualties, in today's municipality there were even 344. Under the Russian occupation, an Eastern workers' camp was built and the right side of the Braunauufer evacuated.

On January 1, 1972, the formerly independent communities of Schrems, Gebharts, Langegg, Langschwarza, Niederschrems and Pürbach were merged to form Schrems.

In 1984 hurricane-like storms ( wind force 8 to 10 on the 12-point scale) caused great damage. In 2002 various districts of Schrems were flooded by the flood of the century .

Community partnerships

• Since June 8, 1991 there has been a town partnership with the Czech city ​​of Třeboň . Before that there was already close cooperation between the scientists at the Waldviertel Ecological Station and the Třeboň Biological Institute . It was the scientists who established the first contacts between the politicians in both cities.

The turmoil of the war and post-war meant that, in 1945, four people appeared in the city chronicle as mayors. Schrems is an industrial center of the Upper Waldviertel. Waldviertel granite from Schrems is a popular building material today, as it was in the past.

In 2001 there were 242 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 122 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment in the place of residence was 2497. In 2001 the activity rate was 43.89 percent.

Companies

• A beer brewery has existed in Schrems since 1410 . In 1838 the castle brewery was bought by Jakob Trojan. He founded a family business that still exists today.
• The textile manufacturer Ergee settled here in the early 1960s and was one of the main employers for many years before the company went bankrupt in 2008 . In 1984 the Waldviertel shoe workshop was founded by Minister of Social Affairs Alfred Dallinger . It was a project to fight unemployment and has meanwhile become an internationally operating company with GEA . a. with the shoe brand Waldviertler . In 2009, the shoe workshop bought a warehouse from the bankrupt Ergee.
