history
Kostelec nad Orlicí was first mentioned in 1303 and belonged to the Pottenstein rule until 1746 . It is documented as a market town for 1358 and a city for 1568. Around this time there was an economic boom with the production of cloth. During the Reformation the city became an important center of the Bohemian Brethren . They built a church from 1580 to 1586, which served as a Catholic church from 1620 and was consecrated to St. Wenceslas .
In 1668, the then owner of the Pottenstein estate, Wenceslaus Zaruba von Hustířan, built a castle on the site of a fortress east of the city center , which was later called the Old Castle . In 1746 Kostelec was released from the Pottenstein lordship and in 1796 sold by Count Harbuval de Chamaré to Count Josef Kinsky (1751–1798) from the Chotzen line of the Kinsky family . His grandson of the same name Josef (1806–1862) built an empire-style castle on the western outskirts of the city from 1829 to 1835 , which the Kinsky family lived until 1945. After the expropriation, it was initially partially used for laboratories and later abandoned to decay. After the Velvet Revolution , it was returned to the Kinsky family in 1997.
In 2014, František Kinský , the current owner of the fully restored chateau, was elected mayor of Kostelec nad Orlicí.
The population development of Kostelec increased continuously. At the time of the Thirty Years' War it was around 1000, in 1836 it was 2565, in 1890 3793, in 1900 around 5000 and in 1937 5639 inhabitants.
