The shot put men at the 1986 European Athletics Championships was on 27 and 28 August 1986 in Stuttgart Neckarstadion discharged.
In this competition, the shot putter from the GDR won two medals, silver and bronze. The European champion was the Swiss Werner Günthör . Second place went to the 1983 vice world champion Ulf Timmermann . Bronze went to the European Championship of 1978 / 1982 , the Olympic champion in 1976 , Olympic bronze medalists from 1980 and world record holder Udo Beyer .

Record improvement
European champion Werner Günthör improved the existing EM record in the final on August 28 by 72 centimeters to 22.22 m.
qualification
August 27, 1986, 6:00 p.m.
Sixteen participants went to the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 19.50 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the two next-placed athletes to twelve shot putters (highlighted in light green). So finally 19.19 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
