final
August 11, 2017, 7:10 p.m. local time (8:10 p.m. CEST )
The closest favorites included the US-American Tianna Bartoletta as world champion in 2015 and Olympic champion in 2016 , her compatriot Brittney Reese, among other things Olympic runner-up in 2016, Olympic champion in 2012 and world champion in 2013 as well as the Serbian Olympic third in 2016, World Cup third in 2015 and 2016 European Champion Ivana Španović.
With widths less than 6.80 m, the competition started a bit sluggishly in the first round. Darja Klischina, starting under a neutral flag, led with 6.78 m ahead of Reese with 6.75 m. In lap two, Španović took the lead with 6.96 m, Klischina improved to 6.88 m. With her third jump, Reese achieved 7.02 m. Before the three finals of the top eight, Reese was leading ahead of Španović and Klischina. British Lorraine Ugen was fourth with 6.72 m ahead of Australian Brooke Stratton. Bartoletta followed in sixth place with a rather modest 6.60 m.
In lap four, Klischina rose to 6.91 m and Bartoletta to 6.64 m, but that didn't change the ranking. In the fifth round, Klischina reached exactly 7.00 m, which displaced Španović to third place. Bartoletta was getting on better now, too. She improved to fourth place with 6.88 m. With her last jump, Tianna Bartoletta achieved 6.97 m and won the bronze medal. Ivana Španović, who had been beaten by only one centimeter, achieved another good distance with 6.91 m, but remained fourth. There were no more changes to the first two places. Brittney Reese won the world title, Darja Klischina won silver. Even from fifth place on, nothing had changed in the finals. Lorraine Ugen finished fifth ahead of Brooke Stratton. Chantel Malone from the British Virgin Islands and the Nigerian Blessing Okagbare finished seventh and eighth.
