Öztunali was born in Hamburg , the son of a daughter of Uwe Seeler and a Turkish father . He started playing soccer at the Norderstedt club TuRa Harksheide . From 2004 to 2006 he played in the youth club of Eintracht Norderstedt . He then worked for seven seasons in the youth department of Hamburger SV . From July 1, 2012, Öztunali played twelve times in the A-Juniors Bundesliga for Hamburger SV.
In January 2013, HSV offered him a contract for a further three years. However, on the advice of his father, he decided to accept an offer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen . There he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. Öztunali made his Bundesliga debut - and thus his first appearance as a professional - on August 10, 2013 (1st matchday) in a 3-1 win at home against SC Freiburg with his substitution for Gonzalo Castro in the 87th minute of the game. At 17 years and 146 days, his commitment made him the club's youngest Bundesliga player to date. In order to gain match practice, Öztunali was loaned to Werder Bremen from the second half of the 2014/15 season until June 30, 2016 . At the start of the second half of the season on February 1, 2015, he made his debut for Werder in the Bundesliga: He was in the starting line-up in the 2-0 win against Hertha BSC . For Werder, he scored his first Bundesliga goal with the 2-1 goal in the 3-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on May 23, 2015, the last matchday of the 2014/15 season. In July 2016, he returned to Leverkusen and completed the preparation with the team.
At the end of August 2016, he signed a five-year contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 . With the Mainz team he took part in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , but the FSV was eliminated in the group stage.
National team
The midfielder has played international matches for the DFB's youth teams since 2010 . On September 6, 2013 in Groesbeek in the 6-1 win against the Netherlands , he made his debut in the U-19 national team and scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the 15th minute. In May 2015, Öztunali played at the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand . At the U-21 European Championship 2017 in Poland, Öztunali made two short appearances in the game against Denmark and in the final against Spain after being substituted on and won the title with the team. With 30 appearances for the U-21 team, he played after Fabian Ernst with one more appearance (as of 2019) the second most games for the team in their history.
