List of the master coach of the Bundesliga
The list of master coaches in the Bundesliga includes all coaches who have led their respective teams to the German championship in the Bundesliga . The Bundesliga is the top division in German men's football and began playing in 1963. Since then, 27 different coaches have won 57 championship titles: 18 Germans , two Austrians , two Italians , a Yugoslav , a Dutch , a Hungarian , a Spaniard and a Croat .
The most successful coach in Bundesliga history is Udo Lattek , who celebrated a total of eight championships as a coach. Ottmar Hitzfeld is second with seven titles. The first master coach in Bundesliga history was Georg Knöpfle . The Austrian Max Merkel was the first foreign master coach in 1966 and the first coach with two titles in 1968. Hennes Weisweiler managed to defend his title for the first time in 1971, before Udo Lattek won the first three titles in a row. Lattek was able to repeat this feat between 1985 and 1987. Then Ottmar Hitzfeld (1999-2001) and the Spaniard Pep Guardiola , who triumphed three times in a row between 2014 and 2016 , managed to do so .
Only three times in the history of the Bundesliga did a German champion employ two coaches in one season. Erich Ribbeck was released from Bayern Munich during the winter break of the 1993/94 season . Franz Beckenbauer took over the team and became champion with it. In the 2017/18 season Carlo Ancelotti , also FC Bayern Munich, was on leave after the 6th matchday. After Willy Sagnol had looked after the team on Matchday 7, Jupp Heynckes took over and won the title on Matchday 29. In the 2019/20 season , Niko Kovac , also FC Bayern Munich, was on leave after the 10th matchday and Hansi Flick took over and won the title on the 32nd matchday.
A total of eight master coaches had previously been German champions as players: Helmut Benthaus was the first to do this (1983/84 with VfB Stuttgart). This was followed by Jupp Heynckes (for the first time in 1988/89 with Bayern Munich), Franz Beckenbauer (1993/94 with Bayern Munich), Matthias Sammer (2001/02 with Borussia Dortmund), Thomas Schaaf (2003/04 with Werder Bremen), Felix Magath ( for the first time in 2004/05 with Bayern Munich), Niko Kovač (2018/19 with Bayern Munich) and Hansi Flick (2019/20 with Bayern Munich). The Croat Kovač is so far the only foreigner who has succeeded in this. The oldest master trainer was Jupp Heynckes in 2018 at the age of 73. The youngest master trainer is Matthias Sammer, who was only 34 years old in 2002.
