The Mauritanian Armed Forces ( Arabic الجيش الوطني الموريتاني ) are the military of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania .
General
The armed forces have a total personnel strength of 15,780 soldiers, which are divided between the classic three armed forces . There is also general conscription with a service period of 24 months. The defense budget was estimated 136 million in 2016 dollars , which 4.1% of gross domestic product accounts.

Land Forces
The Mauritanian Army is the land force of the Mauritanian armed forces and has a staff of 15,000 soldiers. It is divided into six military districts, two battalions of camel riders , a tank battalion , a tank reconnaissance company , eight infantry battalions , seven battalions of motorized infantry , an airborne / special operations battalion , three artillery battalions , four anti - aircraft batteries , an engineer company and the guard battalion .
The army's equipment includes 35 main battle tanks ( T-54 / T-55 ), 70 Panhard AML reconnaissance tanks (AML-60 / AML-90), 10 Alvis Saladin reconnaissance vehicles , 5 FV603 Saracen infantry fighting vehicles , and 20 M3 infantry fighting vehicles. Artillery weapons systems - 105 mm howitzer M-101A / HM-2 , 122 mm howitzer D-30 , Thomson-Brandt 120 mm mortar . Naval forces
The Mauritanian Navy is the naval force of the Mauritanian armed forces and has a staff of 620 soldiers. It was founded on January 25, 1966 and operates its main base in Nouadhibou , in the north of the country, and another in the capital, Nouakchott .
Air Force
The Mauritanian Air Force is the air force of the Mauritanian armed forces with a staff of 250 soldiers. It is their smallest armed force and is divided into two squadrons .
