Messier 110 (also known as NGC 205 ) is an elliptical galaxy with dimensions 19.5 '× 11.5' and an apparent magnitude of +7.9 mag in the constellation Andromeda . It is a companion of Messier 31 , the Andromeda nebula, and thus like it 2.2 million light years away. Messier 110 is now classified as a dwarf spherical galaxy. Their mass is estimated at 3.6 to 15 billion solar masses . It has a halo with eight globular clusters .
Besides Messier 32 , Messier 110 is the second brighter companion galaxy of the Andromeda Nebula and thus a member of the Local Group .
discovery
Messier 110 was discovered by Charles Messier on August 10, 1773 , described in a publication in 1798 and pictured in 1807 on a drawing of the "Great Andromeda Nebula". For unknown reasons, however, he never added this item to his catalog. The "official" inclusion in the Messier catalog took place in 1966 by the science historian K. Glyn Jones.
Caroline Herschel discovered Messier 110 independently of Charles Messier on August 27, 1783 - he then received the number HV 18 from William Herschel .
