The National Assembly ( Portuguese Assembleia Nacional ) is the parliament in the unicameral system of Angola . In the constitution of the state, in addition to the president and the courts, it represents the representation of all citizens of Angola.
composition
The National Assembly consists of 220 MPs, 130 of whom are elected nationwide using proportional representation. The rest of the MPs are elected on provincial lists. 81 women MPs are represented in parliament, which corresponds to 36.82% women. Candidates for a seat in the National Assembly must be at least 35 years of age and hold Angolan citizenship. Members of the government, judges and members of the military, the Forças Armadas Angolanas, are excluded from candidacy . Since there has been an absolute majority of the MPLA in this parliament from the beginning and until today , which also provides the President, it falls into the category of "dominant party system".
elections
Since Angola's transition from the People's Republic to multi-party democracy in 1991, there have been parliamentary elections in 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017. Between 1992 and 2002, the civil war in Angola made elections impossible. It was not until the last parliamentary elections in 2012 that the parliament began to function normally - albeit within the limits of the 2010 constitution, which is extremely presidentialistic. Here 5 different parties moved into the National Assembly.
