chronology
Slippery When Wet
(1986)
New Jersey Keep the Faith
(1992)

New Jersey is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi , which was released in September 1988. It was named after its homeland, the US state of New Jersey . The world tour for this album, called the Jersey Syndicate Tour, spanned 16 months, during which Bon Jovi played 237 shows in 26 countries.

Emergence

After the great success of Slippery When Wet , the band wanted to keep the style, so they continued to work with Desmond Child , for example . But Bon Jovi also wanted to try something new, which is why the new album should be a double album . However, management feared that the resulting higher prices would deter buyers. That's why they finally released a completely normal album. Originally this album was supposed to be called Sons of Beaches , but the record company did not agree with this name, so the band decided on the title New Jersey .

Musical style

The style of the album ties in musically and lyrically to the previous album Slippery When Wet : Hard, guitar and drum-heavy sounds with catchy choruses. Thus, the album, like its predecessor, can be assigned to pop metal. Most of the songs are faster songs, but there are two ballads ( Living in Sin and I'll Be There for You ) and, for example, Ride Cowboy Ride or Stick to Your Guns, there are also explicit cowboy songs on the album. These are two trends that the band started with Slippery When Wet (like the song Wanted Dead or Alive ). For Born to Be My Baby and Love for Sale, Tico Torres played the backing vocals for the first time.

The album is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen because of Homebound Train and the album title (for example Born to Run or Born in the USA ).

Cover versions

  • "The Boys Are Back in Town" is a Thin Lizzy cover version. The song was originally released on the 1976 album Jailbreak .
  • "House of Fire" is not an Alice Cooper cover version in the strict sense, because Bon Jovi recorded the song in 1988 at around the same time as Alice Cooper. The song was finally released in 1988 by Alice Cooper on the album Trash .

Interesting facts about the early Japanese editions

  • The live version of "You Give Love a Bad Name" was recorded in 1987 at Cincinnati Gardens , Cincinnati and originally featured on the 1988 single Bad Medicine .

Things worth knowing about the bonus CD of the Japanese Special Edition from 1998

  • The first live version of "Bad Medicine" was recorded in 1995 at Wembley Stadium in London and first published on this special edition.
  • The second live version of "Bad Medicine" was recorded at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank in 1992 and originally featured on the 1993 Special Edition of the album Keep the Faith .
  • The live version of "Blood on Blood" was recorded at Wembley Stadium in London in 1988 and originally appeared on the 1989 single Lay Your Hands On Me .
  • The acoustic version of "Born to Be My Baby" was originally released on the 1989 single Lay Your Hands On Me .
  • The live version of "I'll Be There for You" was recorded in 1989 at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland and originally released on the 1993 Special Edition of the album Keep The Faith .
  • The live version of "Lay Your Hands on Me" was recorded in 1989 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford and originally released on the 1993 Special Edition of the album Keep The Faith .
  • The song "Love Is War" was originally released on the 1989 single Living in Sin .

Interesting facts about the 2010 Special Edition

  • Both of the live recordings that were added to the 2010 Special Edition are known only to have been recorded during the New Jersey tour. The live version of "Blood on Blood" is therefore not the same live recording that was included on the bonus CD of the Japanese Special Edition from 1998.

Information on individual songs

Born to Be My Baby

Producer Bruce Fairbairn would have preferred the song Born to Be My Baby , which "only" made it to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 , a little slower:

Born to Be My Baby could also have been a number one hit. The song was meant to be a quieter folk-rock track, a Bruce Springsteen-style hymn. But the guys took the pace way too fast and made a blast like Livin 'on a Prayer out of it. I absolutely did not agree with that. "

- Bruce Fairbairn

I'll be there for you

I'll Be There for You is the band's only number one hit that Desmond Child was n't actively involved in. The song is still played very often in live performances and is mostly sung by Richie Sambora. Even Cher played I'll Be There for You from time to time on their heart-of-Stone tour. The song is "interpreted" towards the end of the film Something Like Love by lead actor Ashton Kutcher to show his interest in the female lead actress.

Bad Medicine

The song Bad Medicine also reached number one on the US charts. It is still one of the band's live performances today, but is mostly used as a medley with the song Shout , which was written by the Isley Brothers and interpreted by the Beatles , among others .

Ride cowboy ride

The band built a little gag into the songwriters of Ride Cowboy Ride : The song was written by Captain Kidd and King of Swing . They are aliases for Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. It should give the song a special cowboy attitude, as well as the fact that the song was recorded monophonically .

Living in Sin

The music video for Living in Sin was partially censored because it was too offensive by US standards, with a couple getting a little too obviously physically close in different places - including a beach, a car, and a hotel room.

Omitted songs

Since the album was not released as a double album, the following songs did not make it on the album: Love Is War *, Let's Make It Baby *, Outlaws of Love *, Judgment Day , Growing Up the Hard Way , Does Anybody Really Fall in Love Anymore ? , Rosie *, River of Love (Come Alive) , Backdoor to Heaven , Love Hurts , Diamond Ring *, Now and Forever .

reception

Reviews

Similar to Slippery When Wet , the reviews are mixed to negative, the music is more pop music than rock and the lyrics are insignificant and harmless.

The fact that the band went back to their “metal roots” was received rather negatively by the critics. Nevertheless, the style of the band is well appreciated:

“The lyrics of the American hard rock group Bon Jovi still move in banal to kitschy heart-pain / joy-sorrow spheres, but in connection with groovy catchy tunes express the joy and longing for life and love quite well. The description of youthful cohesion with naive oaths of eternity is impressively implemented in notes and words. "

- Munzinger-Archiv Pop - Pop-Archiv International

In the rock-hard magazine 8.5 out of ten possible points were awarded, the following review was published:

"Is he a serious rocker or just a permed Springsteen blend in heavy garb, good Jon from New Jersey? If you asked the uncompromising Thrash faction of our readership, they would certainly bloodthirstily claim the latter - which would, however, do the good Jon from New Jersey an injustice. Although: Springsteen parallels cannot be dismissed out of hand, nor are U2 influences. The good Jon from New Jersey pairs the whole thing with fat riffs and successful guitar harmonies, so that in the end he deserves the title "serious rocker". Brief question: does anyone even care? The author of these lines has doubts so that he no longer has any desire to further characterize the good Jon from New Jersey. Those who didn't like Bon Jovi so far will continue to steer clear of the band (from New Jersey), and whoever is into it will already know that New Jersey is worth 8.5 points. Oh yes, what I wanted to ask: Is New Jersey actually a free state? "

- Götz Kühnemund: Rock Hard

successes

New Jersey was Bon Jovi's second number one album after Slippery When Wet, and includes number one singles Bad Medicine and I'll Be There for You . The other singles Born to Be My Baby, Lay Your Hands on Me and Living in Sin also reached the top ten, making Bon Jovi the record for the hard rock album with the most top 10 singles in the USA holds. It is the third most successful band album worldwide.

The album went seven times platinum in the US, five times platinum in Canada, and platinum in Germany.

To date, the album New Jersey has sold over 18 million copies worldwide, making it Bon Jovi's most commercially successful album after Slippery When Wet and the best-of album Cross Road .
