Nuri Kazım Şahin [ ˈʃahin ] (also spelled Nuri Kazim Sahin ; born September 5, 1988 in Lüdenscheid ) is a Turkish - German football player . He is under contract with Antalyaspor .
Şahin started his career at RSV Meinerzhagen and joined the youth team of Borussia Dortmund in 2001 at the age of 12 , for whose professional team he was active with interruptions from 2005 to 2018. In his debut season, Şahin set several age records for Borussia Dortmund and Turkey as a 17-year-old and was considered one of the most promising talents in Europe. After establishing himself as a regular in the defensive and offensive midfield in the following years , Şahin was largely responsible for winning the German championship in 2011 and moved to Real Madrid after the season . However, he did not get a chance there and in 2013 found his way back to Dortmund via Liverpool FC , where he was hailed by fans as the "prodigal son", reached the UEFA Champions League final in the same year and was runner-up several times in the following years . He also played for the Turkish national team from 2005 to 2017 , for which he participated in the 2016 European Championships .
Life
Şahin's parents had emigrated from Turkey to Germany before he was born and settled in Meinerzhagen in South Westphalia . He was born in 1988 in nearby Lüdenscheid . Şahin has been married since 2007. His son was born on September 13, 2011.
After winning the German Championship in 2011, Şahin was awarded German citizenship at a reception in Dortmund's town hall .
Club career
Borussia Dortmund
Beginnings and advancement to a professional
Already at the age of four Şahin joined the local club RSV Meinerzhagen. At the age of twelve he finally moved to the youth department at Borussia Dortmund . After he was voted the best player of the tournament at the U17 European Championship in 2005 , some English clubs such as Arsenal , Chelsea and Manchester United were interested in him. Arsène Wenger , long-time coach of Arsenal FC, described him as the world's greatest talent under the age of 18. Arsenal offered three million euros for the then 16-year-old, but Borussia Dortmund turned down this offer.
In the summer of 2005, Şahin was taken directly from the B-youth into the professional squad due to the club's financial problems with some other youth players under coach Bert van Marwijk . On July 23, 2005 he was substituted on for Marc André Kruska in the third round second leg of the UI-Cup 2005 against Sigma Olmütz in the 67th minute and thus celebrated his competitive debut for Borussia Dortmund. At the same time, he was the youngest Dortmund player in Europe. On August 6, 2005, Şahin made his Bundesliga debut against VfL Wolfsburg at the age of 16 and 335 days , replacing Jürgen Friedl as the youngest Bundesliga player ever. Since he was not allowed to sign a professional contract until he was 18, his parents had to agree to a game before each game. On November 26, 2005, Şahin scored his first Bundesliga goal in Nuremberg , replacing Lars Ricken and Ibrahim Tanko as the youngest Bundesliga scorers up to then at the age of 17 years and 82 days . The record was only surpassed on June 6, 2020 by Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen . Şahin ended his debut season with 23 Bundesliga appearances and one goal.
Loan to Rotterdam
In the summer of 2007, Borussia's new coach, Thomas Doll , announced that he was no longer planning with Şahin. Therefore, he moved on loan for one season to Feyenoord Rotterdam , the club of his sponsor and former coach at Borussia, Bert van Marwijk . He made his debut in the 3-0 win against FC Utrecht on August 19, 2007 (1st matchday). In his second game for Feyenoord in a 5-0 win against NAC Breda , the midfielder scored two goals and set up another. Throughout the season he scored six goals in 29 league games and was the Dutch cup winner.
Return to Dortmund
In summer 2008 he returned to Borussia, but missed a large part of the preparation under the new club coach Jürgen Klopp due to an ankle injury . In the first 13 games of the season 2008/09 he came so only to a starting lineup. For the second half of the season, however, he established himself as a regular player and closed the season with two goals and five assists.
The following season, after playmaker Tamás Hajnal was injured, Klopp changed the system from “ 4-4-2 ” to “ 4-2-3-1 ” on matchday 9 . Şahin, who had previously occupied the left side of the midfield diamond, played from then on as one of two defensive middle players and brought it from this position in 33 starting eleven appearances during the 2009/10 season to four goals and eight assists. In the 2010/11 season he scored five goals in 27 competitive games and gave eleven assists. Borussia Dortmund became German champions at the end of the season. The players' union VDV chose Şahin as "Player of the Season".
real Madrid
For the 2011/12 season, Şahin moved to Real Madrid in the Primera División . With the Spaniards he signed a six-year contract until June 30, 2017. Due to an exit clause, he cost Real Madrid around ten million euros. Due to an injury, Şahin was out longer at the beginning of the season and missed a large part of the preparation. He made his 23-minute debut in the Primera División as part of a 7-1 home win against CA Osasuna on matchday 12 . Then he was only considered again in the league on matchday 30. On the 34th matchday, Şahin was in the starting line-up against Sporting Gijón for the first time in a league game, but after an inconspicuous performance was also substituted at half-time as on the 37th matchday in his fourth and last league game in the 2011/12 season. At this point, Real Madrid was already the Spanish champions. Şahin scored his first and only goal in his first year at Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey against third division club SD Ponferradina .
Liverpool FC
On August 25, 2012, Şahin moved to Liverpool on loan for the 2012/13 season . On September 26, 2012, he scored his first two competitive goals for Liverpool in the League Cup , which brought the defending champions a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion . His first Premier League goal followed on September 29, 2012 in the away game at Norwich City . Liverpool won the game 5-2 with Şahin preparing two more goals. Nevertheless, Şahin could not prevail in Liverpool. In November 2012 he lost his regular place and by January 2013 had only seven appearances in the Premier League and four completed games in the UEFA Europa League . The loan agreement was terminated on January 11, 2013.
Return to Borussia Dortmund
On the same day, Şahin was presented as a new addition to his old club Borussia Dortmund. Borussia initially loaned Şahin from Real Madrid for 18 months until June 30, 2014 and then used an agreed purchase option after the loan deal. Şahin's return was part of a great media echo; Among other things, the change was referred to as "Transferhammer" or "Transfer Coup". The “prodigal son” was “happy to be home again” and was given the number 18 on his back, as his previous number 8 was assigned to İlkay Gündoğan . He played his first game after his return on January 19 in a 5-0 win at Werder Bremen when he came on for Sebastian Kehl in the 84th minute . In the 5-1 win against SC Freiburg , Sahin scored two goals and prepared another. He was runner-up with Borussia Dortmund. The sporting highlight of his first six months at BVB was reaching the final of the Champions League . This was lost in a purely German final with 1: 2 against Bayern Munich.
Because of the injury of his competitor İlkay Gündoğan , who was canceled from the second game day of the 2013/14 season due to a sprained spine , and his performances in the first half of the season, which had given him the title of "sixth of the first half", Şahin established himself again as a regular in the defensive midfield of BVB. He played all 34 games and scored two goals; his goal in the 3-1 win against FC Schalke 04 was voted the “goal of the first half of the season”.
The preparation for the 2014/15 season was marked by injuries; he had to stop because of an irritation of the capsule in his knee and a tendinitis. In September 2014, inflamed tissue was removed from Sahin's left knee. After the operation, he was out for around nine weeks and returned to team training on November 12, 2014. After playing seven league games, Şahin was diagnosed with tendon irritation in the upper adductor area in March 2015 , whereupon he was canceled for the rest of the season and for the entire first half of the 2015/16 season. After a break of almost a year, he made his comeback on February 18, 2016 in the Europa League game against FC Porto. After Gündoğan's move to Manchester City , Şahin got his old shirt number 8 back. On April 25, 2017, Şahin extended his contract term with BVB prematurely by another year until June 30, 2019.
Werder Bremen
After Şahin was unable to recommend himself for regular appearances in preparation under the new coach Lucien Favre , his contract with BVB was terminated prematurely and he moved to Werder Bremen within the Bundesliga on August 31, 2018 . As a six, he was originally intended to succeed Thomas Delaney , but initially alternated in this position with Philipp Bargfrede and came to 23 competitive games in his first season, in which he was able to score and prepare a goal. In the DFB Cup , the German-Turk failed with Werder in the semifinals at the eventual winner Bayern Munich. In the first half of the 2019/20 season , Şahin was a regular player, but lost his place in February 2020 in favor of a double six that was now formed by Davy Klaassen and Maximilian Eggestein . After 17 games this season for Bremen, in which he had prepared four goals, the midfielder fell out of the game in early June due to a hip injury. The team has been in relegation battle since the end of the series.
Antalyaspor
At the end of August 2020, Şahin moved to the Turkish Süper Lig at Antalyaspor , where he signed a two-year contract and is Lukas Podolski's team-mate .
National team
In May 2005, Şahin was European champion with the Turkish U-17 national team and was voted the best player of the tournament. At the U-17 World Cup taking place in autumn 2005 , he reached fourth place with Turkey and won the “Bronze Ball” as the third best player in the tournament and the “Silver Shoe” as the second best goalscorer (four goals).
On October 8, 2005, Şahin had his first appearance in the Turkish national team , when he came on in the 85th minute of the game against Germany (friendly game) and shortly afterwards scored the goal to 2-0 in the 89th minute. With this, Şahin has replaced Emre Belözoğlu (against Norway on February 23, 2000 , then 19 years old) as the youngest Turkish international and is also the youngest goalscorer in the national team. For the European Championship 2008 he was not considered by the then coach Fatih Terim . In qualifying for the European Championship in 2012 , he only made three appearances under the then coach Guus Hiddink .
In November 2011, Şahin declared that he would no longer play for the national team as long as they were coached by Hiddink. After the Turkish federation had separated from Hiddink in the same month and Abdullah Avcı had become the new national coach, Şahin made his comeback on February 29, 2012 after an almost one-year break in the friendly against Slovakia (1: 2) . At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Turkish squad . Only in the second game against Spain he was substituted at half time, when it was already 2-0 for the defending champions. The game ended 3-0 and Şahin was back on the bench in the third game. After the group round, the tournament was over for the team.
On November 2, 2017, Şahin announced his resignation via Twitter and Facebook.
Coaching career
Şahin has been assistant trainer at RSV Meinerzhagen since May 2015 . His brother Ufuk appears as a player at the top division.
