Starting position
The favorite was the two-time British world champion in 2009 and 2011 , European champion in 2010 and leader in the world's annual best list Jessica Ennis. With Natalja Dobrynska, Hyleas Fountain and Tatjana Tschernowa, who was later disqualified for doping abuse, all the medal winners from 2008 started here. The fiercest opponent, however, was the French European champion from 2012 Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida. With good prospects, the two German Jennifer Oeser began as Vice World Champion in 2009 and Lilli Schwarzkopf as WM -Fünfte of 2011 and the silver medalist of 2004 Austra Skujytė from Lithuania. The 2010 African champion Margaret Simpson from Ghana was registered but did not take part in the competition.
Summary
With 12.54 s, Ennis started the competition furiously over the 100 meter hurdles . That was the British national record and at the same time the best time ever achieved in a heptathlon. The 12.65 s of the Canadian Jessica Zelinka were also strong. Only three other athletes undercut the 13-second mark, the American Hyleas Fountain with 12.70 s, the Belgian Sara Aerts with 12.94 s and Nana Djimou Ida with 12.96 s. After the first discipline, the world champion led by a clear margin over her strong competition.
Skujytė, who set a personal record with 1.92 m and jumped as the only heptathlon higher than 1.90 m, shone in the high jump. The closest to her came with 1.89 m the British Katarina Johnson-Thompson and the Belarusian Jana Maksimawa. Ennis, Fountain and Nadine Broersen from the Netherlands each achieved 1.86 m. After the second discipline, Ennis, who now had 2249 points in her account, led back before Fountain - 25 P, Johnson-Thompson - 103 P back, Skujytė - 139 P, Nana Djimou Ida - 142 P and Schwarzkopf - 147 P back.
Skujytė also impressed in the shot put, with 17.31 m, the largest distance ever achieved in a heptathlon. More than two meters behind her, Dobrynska had the second best result with 15.05 m. The German Julia Mächtig hit 14.99 m, then a tightly packed field followed. Ennis and Nana Djimou Ida stayed with widths of just over fourteen meters within their possibilities. Skujytė now took the lead with 3126 points ahead of Ennis, who was 64 p behind her. Then came Schwarzkopf - 179 P behind the front-runner, the Russian Kristina Sawizkaja - 196 P, Dobrynska - 206 P, Nana Djimou Ida - 207 P.
Over 200 meters there were two runners who stayed under 23 seconds. Dafne Schippers and Ennis from the Netherlands crossed the finish line in 22.83 seconds. Zelinka came closest to them with 23.32 seconds. Then followed the Swiss Ellen Sprunger with 23.59 s ahead of Fountain - 23.64 s. Here Dobrynska - 24.69 s, Nana Djimou Ida - 24.72 s, Schwarzkopf - 24.77 s and Skujytė - 25.43 s lost many important points. At the end of the first day, Ennis was leading with a very good 4158 points. Skujytė was already 184 P behind her in second place. Then followed Zelinka - residue 255 P, Fountain - 258 P, Schippers - 259 P, Sawizkaja - 292 P and Schwarzkopf - 303 P.
In the long jump , the first discipline of the second day, the athletes had to struggle with changing winds, so the very large distances were not achieved. With 6.48 m Ennis had the best result and thus extended their lead. The distances were not great, however, the Ukrainian Hanna Melnytschenko jumped 6.40 m, Schwarzkopf 6.30 m, Schippers 6.28 m and Skujytė 6.26 m. Fountain, on the other hand, was well behind with her 6.05 m. Ennis now led with 258 points ahead of Skujytė, who continued to run second. Schippers in third was 323 p behind Ennis, Schwarzkopf was now fourth with 361 p behind the Briton. Then Zavitskaya - 377 P - and Fountain - 394 P followed behind the leader.
In the penultimate exercise, the javelin throw , the level was extremely high. The Greek Sofia Yfandidou achieved the greatest distance in a heptathlon at the Olympic Games with 56.96 m. Nana Djimou Ida also stayed above the old record of 55.70 m of the Syrian Ghada Shouaa from 1996 . The French Marisa De Aniceto - 51.98 m, Broersen - also 51.98 m, Schwarzkopf - 51.73 m, the Latvian Laura Ikauniece - 51.27 m - and Skujytė - 51.13 m - exceeded the 50 meters -Brand. Ennis had a good throw for her possibilities with 47.49 m. Sawizkaja - 43.70 m - and especially Schippers - 38.63 m - and Fountain - 21.60 m gambled away their medal chances here. Ennis' lead remained a reassuring 198 points over Skujytė. Nana Djimou Ida was now third again, 83 P behind second. Schwarzkopf was only four points behind. Then came the medal places Zavizkaya and Zelinka with larger gaps of clearly more than 150 P.
Before the final 800-meter run , it was clear that Ennis, as a strong middle distance athlete, could only be prevented from winning the Olympic Games by a fall or an injury. The battle for silver and bronze had not yet been decided. Skujytė had a considerable lead over Nana Djimou Dia and Schwarzkopf, but was clearly the weakest 800m runner among the three, while Schwarzkopf was also stronger than the French European champion. Ennis finally achieved the fastest time with 2: 08.65 minutes. Zelinka ran 2: 09.15 min, the Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton 2: 09.27 min. Then Schwarzkopf came with 2: 10.50 min. That was clearly enough for the German for second place. Nana Djimou Dia scored 2: 15.94 min, Skujytė 2: 20.59 min.
After the race there was initially a lot of irritation. Schwarzkopf should be disqualified for touching the lane marking. The athlete then turned to the judge for an explanation. After studying the video recordings of the run, which Schwarzkopf made with a referee, it turned out that it was not Schwarzkopf but the Russian Kristina Savitskaya, who was running in front of her, who had touched the lane marking. A protest by the Ukrainian team, whose starter Jossypenko now went without a medal, was immediately rejected. Jossypenko's result was then completely annulled the following year because of doping abuse. However, it remains unclear why Zavizkaya was not disqualified and is still listed as sixth in the official rankings.
Jessica Ennis became Olympic champion by a clear margin and with her 6955 points achieved the highest number of points at the Olympic Games in twenty years. Lilli Schwarzkopf won 305 P behind her with 6649 P silver. Austra Skujytė's lead was enough to save the bronze medal. She scored 6599 P, Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida was fourth with 6576 P ahead of Jessica Zelinka - 6480 P - and Kristina Sawizkaja - 6452 P.
