Distribution of the secured current and historical toponymics and settlement names on "Parz" (selection as of 2014, 80 entries)

Word origin

Porz [ e ] ( m. ) Is probably an independent East Central Bavarian word. At its core, it shouldmean “pile of stones” . It describes Middle High German as a landform of a "small, stony, lean hill".

Special local interpretations are for example:

  • "Small elevation, bulge in the terrain",
  • Hills, "on which heather or blueberries grow",
  • "A pasture on a hill"
  • or "raised ground overgrown with scrub"

The meaning can - also in other areas - up to "young softwood "; "Young or small trees" in general, " brushwood " or "crippled wood" go, each with various comparatively worthless small and small wood. Middle High German barz is the name for the tamarisk (also birz ) or caper plants , i.e. sparse bushes.

On the other hand, there is the variant of meaning "small elevation in the ground on which the haystack (haystack on the hay meadow) is secured from the water". The origin of such hills could be natural. A certain distribution in the foothills of the Alps, where there are no geogenic structures of this type, or on the March, also makes it possible to use a term for reading stone deposits, in which the plowed and eroded field stones were collected, as they are still today in the granite and gneiss highlands (Mühl- , Waldviertel) can be found. The growth would then be secondary.

There is the possibility of a derivation from the Bavarian expression porz (en) "roundish protruding", as it is used for land forms, but also for trees and people. The hypothesis is supported by several old documents from the 12th to the 14th centuries as Borzze, Porzze, Portz, Porcz . Both expressions would then be in Middle High German barzen "protrude, burst, stare, push out".

In addition to the form on "a" and the probably older "o", variants Purz [en], Pürzel , and perhaps proximity to Bürzel "Rump" could also be considered

Another derivation could be traced back to Slavic po “an” and rěkeriver ”. That does not explain all compound forms conclusively, nor does it explain their occurrence, especially in the western Bavarian core area on the Inn. But already from the eastern Innviertel there can be at least a support, which seems plausible because of the diverse documented other Slavic roots, which suggest a peaceful takeover with the continued existence of the pre-settlement, and could have had an ever stronger effect towards the east and south .

Latin roots, on the other hand, (for example to porta “gate”, portus “harbor” or to parcel ) appear hardly likely, or at best supportive in individual cases.

In any case, the expression was probably still alive in the middle to later modern times ( Wolfpaizing "where the wolf torments" of the 16th century is reinterpreted in the regional recordings of the late 17th and 18th centuries to Wolparzing "cheap hill").

To the south-west - in Salzburg and the surrounding area - and south - Salzburg as far as Styria - the distribution areas Palfen (probably Romanesque traditional pre-Roman) and Ofen (Germanic or older), in the broader meaning of 'rock formation, rock wall' , adjoin, largely without overlap. to 'cave'.

Variants and Distribution

The name can be found, roughly enumerated from northwest to southeast. It is striking that in ostbayerisch-Upper Austrian area primarily settlement names , many in Lower Austria's space field names are preserved.
