United States Army regimental system
The regiment system of the United States Army engl. United States Army Regimental System (USARS) has been defining the regimental structure in the US Army since 1981 . Every active soldier in the US Army and reservist in the US Army Reserve and Army National Guard is assigned to a regiment or special corps through this system.
history
In the American Revolution, regiments from the individual colonies formed the basis of the Continental Army . After 1783, these were disbanded except for a few border posts because they wanted to avoid a strong central army. At that time, the regiment was the basic organizational element of the US Army and all armies worldwide. The support troops that did not belong to a regiment were organized into corps. For example the United States Army Corps of Engineers founded in 1775 . These were divided into brigades or detachments.
This organization remained almost unchanged until the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the regiments of the Regular Army, there were also regiments of the individual state militias, such as B. the 14th New York Infantry Regiment . With the establishment of the United States National Guard , the system was changed. The regiments were numbered continuously. New branches of the army, such as armored forces or army aviation, had no regiments and were organized in battalions.
After the Korean War , the division's organization was changed. One wanted to adapt the rigid regiment system of the infantry to the realities of the nuclear battlefield . For this purpose, smaller and more agile combat groups should replace the regiment. However, in order to maintain the soldiers' relationship with the regiment and to be able to continue the history of the regiments, the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) was introduced in 1957 . The CARS comprised the infantry , artillery , anti-aircraft , armored and cavalry branches . The remaining battalions were assigned to so-called parent regiments . A parent regiment has neither a commander nor a staff, but serves to bind the soldier to a single regiment and to continue the tradition.
An extension set 1981 then the United States Army Regimental System (USARS) . The German Army were included in the regiment system and the corps support troops were equated a regiment. In addition, the training units of the schools of the US Army were also assigned to regiments.
In the course of the transformation, a reorganization and thus activation or inactivation of various regiments has been taking place for several years , so that the regiments called the Army Regulation have already been changed.
