Die Rettungsflieger is a television series that depicts fictitious missions of a rescue helicopter . The series, which was produced by Studio Hamburg and first broadcast by ZDF from 1997 to 2007, tries to maintain the closeness to reality in some aspects despite the undisputed entertainment character of the representation.

background

Bell UH-1D on the site of the former Lettow-Vorbeck-Kaserne in Hamburg (location)

Unlike in many other emergency series, the rescue helicopter depicted in this series actually existed. It was the SAR Hamburg 71 , which was stationed at the Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg in Hamburg-Wandsbek.

The SAR 71 crashed on March 14, 2002 during an operation. In 2006 he was replaced by newer rescue helicopters from the federal police following the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr from civil air rescue and has been flying since then under the nickname Christoph 29 . The Bundeswehr hospital was rarely used as a set. The former Lettow-Vorbeck barracks in Hamburg-Jenfeld served as the fictitious location scenery .

Frequently used locations for the series were the eastern part of Hamburg around Jenfeld, Rahlstedt and Billstedt, but also districts in the Mitte district. The series is characterized by authenticity and was largely filmed on original locations.

The Bundeswehr supported the shooting as part of its public relations work. The shown helicopters of the type Bell UH-1 D were, with the exception of a few consequences, actually the property of the Bundeswehr and were flown by Bundeswehr personnel.

Some authorities and organizations with security tasks from the greater Hamburg area also supported the filming by providing vehicles and personnel for TV "missions".

production

Eleven seasons with a total of 108 episodes and a pilot film were produced and broadcast.

The 13 episodes of the eleventh season ran weekly on Wednesday evening on ZDF. Since April 10, 2007, the episodes have been shown in advance on the Internet on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. After the 11th season with a happy ending , the ZDF decided not to continue the series.

Since then, single or multiple seasons have been repeated regularly in the afternoon programs of ZDF (until 2013) and ZDF_neo and in some cases achieve significantly better ratings than newly produced TV series of ZDF, which they are broadcast in place.

Episode list

Leading roles

The real star of the series is the Bundeswehr helicopter SAR 71 ( Bell UH-1D ), which the team affectionately calls "Anneliese".

Dr. Maren Maibach

Medical officer Dr. Maren Maibach is played by Gerit Kling and is one of the series' starting crew. The somewhat unstable, but responsible mid-30-year-old is an emergency doctor with body and soul. We learn from her that, as the eldest of her siblings, she used to take on a lot of responsibility for them, as her mother , who worked as a tailor , had to work a lot. In the third season she has a brief relationship with the tea dealer Anton Wollcke, the older brother of the on-board mechanic Jan Wollcke. They have a close friendship with the pilot Alexander Karuhn, which ultimately leads to a relationship. However, she leaves the team when her sister dies in a car accident to move to Berlin and take care of her sister's children. This also means the end of her relationship with Alexander Karuhn.

Alexander Karuhn

Captain - later Major - Alexander Karuhn , called "Alex" and portrayed by Matthias Leja , is the first pilot and chief of Anneliese's crew. The very sporty pilot goes jogging, rides his bike and always takes care of his health. In the sixth episode of the fourth season he takes part in the Hamburg Marathon . In addition, he is a very calm, balanced and peaceful person who, however, gets louder and angry even in heated situations. In the pilot, his father, with whom he had a difficult relationship, succumbs to lung cancer .

He has a deep friendship with Dr. Maren Maibach, who after much back and forth finally becomes more. After separating from Maren and a promotion to major, he married the marketing manager Astrid and soon after went to the United States because he had received an offer to train the Bell UH-1D.

Alexander Karuhn has a son, whom he only met when he was fourteen.

While visiting the crew, Jan Wollcke suffered a circulatory collapse and had to go to the Bundeswehr hospital for an examination. That's why he steps in as an on-board mechanic that day.

Max Westphal

Sergeant Major Max Westphal , played by Frank Stieren , is the first on-board mechanic on the helicopter and is very popular in the team. He is best known for his women’s stories, but when his luck with a courier driver who is pregnant by him seems perfect, he is seriously injured on an emergency mission while rescuing a young child. After a lumbar spine fracture, he must be operated on. In the following it no longer occurs.

Thomas Asmus

The enthusiastic family man Oberbootsmann Thomas Asmus , called Tommy , is embodied by Ulrich Bähnk and is considered a particularly experienced and nerve-racking paramedic. Together with Maren Maibach, he is part of the first SAR 71 medical team; however, later leaves the team with his family in the direction of Ulm to his sick mother-in-law. After she died, he was asked by Torsten Biedenstedt, his successor, during a visit to Hamburg to take over the job in Hamburg again so that he could be transferred to a disaster response to Africa. He later leaves the team because he is going to be the head of a facility for the disabled, as he would have to leave SAR 71 and take on an office post if he were to be promoted to chief boatman. He does not appear again in later episodes.

Homann

Corporal Timo Homann ( Pierre René Müller ) has been with the rescue pilots since the first season and is the good soul of the company. He immediately notices when someone on the team is not doing well and usually finds comforting words. But secrets are in the wrong place with Homann if you don't want everyone to know. He is secretly called "The Rumor" by his colleagues. Through his actions, however, he often triggers medium-sized disasters, even though he only means well.

After his promotion to corporal, he met the nurse Cora and married her. The two have a son named Max.

Jan Wollcke

Hauptfeldwebel - later Staff Sergeant - Jan Wollcke , known as "Wollcke", is portrayed by Oliver Hörner and is the sonnyboy in the team and in his mid- thirties . Technology is his big hobby, so with his job as a sergeant in the armed forces and on-board technician with the SAR 71, he has achieved his professional dream goal.

In his private life, too, things are going according to plan: with his son Richie from his first marriage to Iris, who was killed in an accident, and his new wife Madeleine Descartes, he forms a spirited blended family. In season 11, after Jan Wollcke was promoted to staff sergeant, the two buy a house, which often leads to disputes during the renovation.

He has a deep friendship with Jens Blank that is often put to the test.

Dr. Ilona Müller

First of all, the emergency doctor, medical officer Dr. Ilona Müller ( Julia Heinemann ) the vacation replacement for Dr. Maren Maibach and has problems in the team at the beginning. Since she is the general's daughter, she is received with skepticism and is referred to as a "spoiled turkey" by the pilot Alexander Karuhn. During the first use, she clashes with Thomas Asmus and makes it clear to him that she is the emergency doctor and not him. Slowly, however, she is integrating into the team and sharing her passion for chess . At the end of the vacation replacement she moved to Koblenz , but returned after saying goodbye to Maren. During this time she has a brief love affair with the manager Ben, who is married, however. During an operation, she is seriously injured by the wing of a small aircraft and is taken care of by Dr. Sabine Petersen replaces. However, Thomas mentions that after the rehab she might soon be able to fly again as an emergency doctor. It does not appear again in later episodes.

Torsten Biedenstedt

Paramedic Sergeant Torsten Biedenstedt , played by Tom Wlaschiha , will succeed Thomas Asmus after he left the team for Ulm. He is the son of Prof. Biedenstedt from the UKE , who left Torsten and his mother many years ago. Torsten leaves the team some time later to work on a disaster response in Africa. After this assignment, he returns as a vacation replacement for the new paramedic Paul Reinders and at the end of his replacement period, among other things at the urging of the others in the team, decides to study medicine. He does not appear again later in the series.

Jens Blank

First, the pilot, Captain Jens Blank, played by Nicolas König , jumps in as a vacation replacement for Alexander Karuhn and later joins the rescue team as his successor. At first it is very closed and rather dry. It is only slowly that he gets to know his colleagues better. Sabine discovers that a soft core is hidden under its rough shell, even if Jens finds it difficult to show his feelings. He has a special friendship with her.

Jens was married, but he had divorced years before he joined the rescue team. He remains single until he finally falls in love with the journalist Juliane. But the two separate again after his promotion to major, because Juliane does not like the fact that Jens still lives in the rescue center and is not ready to reduce his working hours. She is also jealous of Sabine, as she has often surprised them both during a hug. In the end, Jens even confesses to her that he doesn't love her at all. On the other hand, his feelings for the team's best friend and emergency doctor, Sabine, grow stronger day by day, even if he doesn't want to admit it to himself at first. For a long time Jens refuses to admit his feelings to Sabine. In the episode “Schöne Aussichten”, he even tells her that they should just stay friends because he is afraid of official consequences. However, he realizes that this is the wrong decision. In the end, they kiss and realize that they are made for one another. How it goes with the two is not told.

Dr. Sabine Petersen

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sabine Petersen ( Marlene Marlow ) is an emergency doctor with body and soul . When she joined the team, she had already been with the Bundeswehr for six years. The 33-year-old knows what it means to work your way up from a simple background. She also has completely different talents: She gave up her career as a singer to study medicine. In season 6, episode 6, The Trauma , you learn why she became an emergency doctor. The rescue pilots are called to an accident in which a truck has rammed a motorcycle. Its driver dies at the scene of the accident. This event reminds Sabine how years before she lost her best friend Maria, called "Mary", during a ride on the motorcycle. The motorcycle Mary was riding was also rammed by a truck and Mary lay lifeless on the ground. The emergency doctor came and didn't come and Sabine couldn't help her friend. By the time the ambulance came, Mary had already died. At the time, Sabine swore that she would never again want to be helpless in such a situation.

Sabine is an absolute family person. But she only met her father, who had left her, her mother and her brothers, shortly before his death. She doesn't get along very well with her brothers, however, because one is a petty criminal and the other is an absolute know-it-all.

During an assignment, Sabine met 14-year-old Sybille “Bille” Liebermann, who lost her parents during the assignment. Sabine can win the trust of the disturbed girl and takes it with herself. In season 11, Bille moves in with her uncle again because Sabine doesn't have enough time for her.

Sabine separates from her long-time friend Karsten after catching him with someone else and remains single for a long time. Her liaisons with chief medical officer Dr. Stefan Riekhoff and Colonel Ralph Brandt with the commodore were some time ago. She gets along better and better with Jens Blank, who was initially just her best friend. There is a huge crackling between the two, but neither of them confesses to the other that he loves him. In addition, Colonel Brandt does not tolerate couples on the same machine. At the end of the episode “Schöne Aussichten”, Jens decides to tell Sabine how much he loves her. The two kiss.

Paul Reinders

Sergeant Paul Reinders , played by Rainer Sellien , takes over the job of paramedic as successor to Thomas Asmus. The initially shy father of twins is accepted by the SAR 71 crew with certain prejudices, but integrates very quickly. The beautiful atmosphere doesn't last long, however. Reinders had a traffic accident in season 8, but could not be driven to the hospital because he was on his way to work in SAR 71, where he collapsed a short time later on the way back from an operation. It quickly becomes clear that he suffered a whiplash and a dens fracture from the traffic accident . Paul Reinders dies during the subsequent operation on the cervical spine.

Johannes von Storkow

Oberfeldwebel Johannes von Storkow , called "Johnny", is the paramedic and successor to Paul Reinders in the team and is played by Patrick Wolff . His carefree, spontaneous manner is immediately likeable to everyone, which is why he quickly makes friends in the team. If he sometimes lacks insight and a sense of responsibility, Jonny remains a good-hearted guy.

He is with Tatjana Jovic. But she is still married and her husband Ivo cannot cope with the separation. Ivo tries to kill Tatjana and himself in the episode “Separation”. This attempt fails, however, and Ivo is so badly injured that it is questionable whether he will survive. How it went with him is not told.

He has a split relationship with his father.

reception

The television series was widely praised for its authenticity , which was created through close cooperation with the German armed forces and an experienced emergency doctor.

Michael Reufsteck and Stefan Niggemeier criticized in their work " Das Fernsehlexikon - Everything over 7000 programs from Ally McBeal to the ZDF hit parade" that the frequent change of actors in the series would damage.

"With the constant back and forth in the staff, something goes under that there are definitely other storylines in the series: the usual fates of guest stars to be rescued as well as the personal affairs, intrigues, jealousies and tragedies in the lives of the main characters."

Trivia

  • In many episodes, the tactical identification of Bell changes between take-off and landing, or the separately held SAR door of the rescue helicopter is different when it takes off at the rescue center than when it lands at the scene of the incident. The reason for this is that the scenes were shot on different days or scenes were used in different episodes.
  • Similarly, in some camera positions, different rank badges or uniforms of the flight crew (pilot and master mechanic ) can be seen than in an earlier or later scene. These differences can be explained by the fact that the UH-1D was not flown by the actors themselves, but by Luftwaffe personnel of the Bundeswehr and obviously insufficient attention was paid to these details. Even when using a winch , on-board technicians and paramedics wear a different rank badge than in previous or subsequent scenes.
  • In the pilot film, parts of the lettering “Scheele-Haus” can be seen on the fictitious rescue center. The house was one of the team buildings around the parade ground of the former Lettow-Vorbeck barracks in Hamburg-Jenfeld. The lettering was covered for further shooting.
  • The landing site for many rescue missions in which patients were transported to a hospital was on the parade ground of the neighboring Estorff barracks.
  • From season 8, the logo was changed, which is modeled on a spinning helicopter rotor.
  • Many of the Hamburg hospitals did not have a filming permit, so other hospitals were renamed.
  • Often used hospitals were Asklepios Klinik Altona , Asklepios Klinik St. Georg , Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf , Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Hamburg (was never shown in its function as a Bundeswehr hospital itself, a house of the Lettow-Vorbeck barracks next to the parade ground was used), children's hospital Wilhelmstift , Berufsgenossenschaftliches Unfallkrankenhaus Hamburg , Asklepios Klinik Barmbek .
  • Up to around episode 55, the building, later named the Bundeswehr hospital, was mostly used as the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Clinic, or less often as the Asklepios Clinic Altona.
  • The actual clinic area of the Bundeswehr hospital was shown in several short sequences in the series, but the hospital was then not called the Bundeswehr hospital, but AK Altona. In the pilot film, the BWK landing site is used as the landing site for the Lübeck Clinic.
  • In the episodes “Death Trip” and “Between Heaven and Earth” of the fifth and sixth seasons, a second SAR rescue helicopter, also a Bell UH-1D, is used as an exception.
  • In the episode “The Fear in the Neck”, in addition to the SAR helicopter, a naval frigate, the Rhineland-Palatinate , can be seen when the SAR 71 lands there to use the ship 's hospital.
  • In some episodes the same start and landing scenes were used at the rescue center. This can be seen because in these episodes the car of a former crew member is parked in the parking lot.
  • The SAR 71 belongs to the air transport wing 63 , which is stationed in Hohn . The Hohn air base was shown in episodes 1x04, 2x03, 5x03, 9x02 and 10x03 .
  • In some episodes there was apparently no Bundeswehr helicopter available. Instead, a civil helicopter of the type Bell 205 of the Agrarflug Helilift (registration D-HAFM) was used. This can be recognized by the pitot tubes on the nose of the helicopter, the missing approval numbers (only an iron cross on the tail boom) and the tail rotor mounted on the right. In some photos, the D-HAFM license plate on the tail boom can be seen very faintly. This helicopter was already used in the filming of the movie Cliffhanger - Only the Strong Survive .
