Rügland Castle

The Rügland Castle is a two part water palace complex in Rügland . It is one of the few moated castles in Middle Franconia and was renovated by 1983.

prehistory

The Rüglander area was already settled during the Stone Age; the first mention of the place took place in the year 1137. At that time the right of ownership to Rügland Berta, the widow of Gerunch von Wielandsheim, was granted. In 1147 Rügland was transferred to the St. Gumbert Abbey in Ansbach as a fief . By 1298 at the latest, the Lords of Vestenberg owned the Rosenberg Castle and the moated castle in Rügland. Remains of the castle are still preserved.

Old castle

On September 3, 1584 Hanns von Vestenberg sold his property to his cousin Ernst von Crailsheim , who was governor in Ansbach. Rosenberg Castle, which was at least partially preserved at that time, was called the "old house" at that time. Presumably the building was destroyed in the course of the Thirty Years War ; in any case, in 1690 it was only referred to as a collapsed castle. The moated castle, which also passed into the possession of Ernst von Crailsheim, was replaced in 1611 by the building now known as the "Old Castle".

The north wing of the “Old Castle” has been preserved, which has a half-timbered upper floor. The castle bridge and a gate passage, on which the coat of arms of the Lords of Crailheim and Dölzkau is attached, also originate from this building. The "Old Castle" still houses a former guardroom and the St. Elisabeth chapel, which is used by the local Catholic community. Presumably there was a church or chapel with this name in the village even before the “Old Castle” was built, as Kraft von Vestenberg founded a perpetual mass for Rügland as early as 1413 . The associated farm buildings are likely to be a little older than the "Old Castle". They probably date from around 1600.

Hannibal Friedrich Freiherr von Crailsheim had the "New Palace" built from April 1714, which forms the central and south wing of the entire complex. The plans came from Freiherr Karl Friedrich von Zocha , who later became court architect and margravial minister in Ansbach.

The first floor of the "New Castle" is now used as the family museum of the Lords of Crailsheim, who still live in the castle in summer, and as an event location. Finds from the excavation near Rosenberg Castle are shown there. The central hall has a ceiling painting with mythological representations, as well as a portrait gallery of nobles.

Castle Park

The castle park is decorated with figures made of sandstone . These sculptures, which show Venus, Cupid, Mars, Zeus, Hercules and Flora, as well as the balustrade of the inner courtyard, were made by the master craftsman Sommer from Künzelsau .

Rügland manor

The manor Rügland belonged to the knight canton of Altmühl . It exercised the high court over Lindach , Rosenberg and Rügland to a limited extent. If necessary, it had to be delivered to the Ansbach court box office in Brandenburg-Ansbach . It ruled the village and community in the above-mentioned places. In addition, it partially ruled the village and community in Andorf and Unterstbibert . At the end of the 18th century it had the basic rule over 166 properties, which were distributed in the following places (the number of properties is given in brackets): Adelmannsdorf (2), Altendettelsau (3), Andorf (1), Berglein (1), Buch (1), Ebenhof (1), Eyb (5), Flachslanden (14), Frankendorf with Fessenmühle (7), Frickendorf (2), Froschmühle (1), Gräfenbuch (3), Kleinhabersdorf (1), Lehrberg (2 ), Lindach (15), Mitteldachstetten (3), Reinswinden (1), Rosenberg (13), Rügland (53), Schlauersbach (4), Stockheim (1), Tiefenthal (10), Unterheßbach (5), Unternbibert (15 ), Untersulzbach (2). Even after secularization (1803) the manor Rügland held the patrimonial court over its property until 1848 .
