history

In 1818 there were 93 inhabitants in what was then Rogahlen , but their number increased to 317 by 1863. The rural community was part of the Darkehmen district (1938–1946 Angerapp , today Russian: Osjorsk) in the Gumbinnen (Gussew) administrative district of the Prussian province of East Prussia . In 1874 Rogahlen became an official village.

In 1910, 333 people lived here, the number of which was 335 in 1925, increased to 403 in 1933 and 344 in 1939. Already in 1928 the manor district Klewienen (today Polish: Klewiny), in 1934 the rural community Skallischkehmen (Polish: Skaliszkiejmy) and in 1935 the rural community Wittgirren (1938-1945 Wittbach , Polish: Widgiry) was incorporated into Rogahlen. On June 3, 1938 - with official confirmation from July 16, 1938 - Rogahlen was renamed "Gahlen".

As a result of the Second World War , the village came under Polish administration. It was given the name Rogale, which occurs several times in Poland. Today the place is incorporated into the Gmina Banie Mazurskie in the powiat Gołdapski of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (1975-1998 Suwałki Voivodeship ) and is the seat of a Schulzenamt .

Church building

Village church

The Gothic style church was consecrated on May 12, 1901. Instead of a tower, only a belfry was initially built. An altar crucifix of ebony with silver body was a gift of Mother Church Szabienen (1938-1945 Lautersee, Polish Zabin ). The church was repaired several times before 1945. Pastor Kurt Hetz held the last Protestant service there on October 22, 1944 , before he fled like the other local residents. The postman Walter Radtke fetched the altar cross from the church and took it with him on the run. So it was saved and has been in the Angerapp district community since 1984. The church building was restored several times after 1945 and is now used as a Catholic church.

Baptist Chapel

In Rogahlen there was a chapel of the Baptist church . It is now being used as a barn for a different purpose by a neighboring farmer.

Evangelical parish

Before 1945 Rogahlen had a predominantly Protestant population and only became a church village in 1895. Until then it belonged to the parish of Szabienen (1936–1938 Schabienen , 1938–1945 Lautersee , Polish: Żabin). In 1913 the parish became independent after the church and rectory had already been completed and a separate pastorate could be set up. Rogahlen belonged to the church district Darkehmen (1938-1946 Angerapp , today Russian: Osjorsk) in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union until 1945 .

The now only few Protestant church members are now integrated into the parish of Suwałki ( Suwalken ) with the branch church in Gołdap ( Goldap ) in the Masurian diocese of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland .

Parish (until 1945)

The parish Rogahlen / Gahlen belonged to seven localities up to 1945, which were converted from the neighboring bar parishes to Rogahlen: Audinischken (1938–1945 Hilpertswerder , since 1945 Audyniszki), Groß Jahnen (since 1945 Jany), Juckneitschen (1935 to 1045 Steinhagen , since 1945 Juchnajcie ), Klein Jahnen (Janki), Klein Rosinsko (since 1945 rożyńsk mały) Klewienen (since 1945 Klewiny) Matzwolla (1938-1945 Balschdorf , since 1945 Maciejowa Wola) Morathen, Ostkehmen (since 1945 Osieki) Rogahlen / Gahlen, Sokollen (1938 to 1945 Hainholz , since 1945 Sokoły) and Wittgirren (1938–1945 Wittbach , since 1945 Widgiry). Besides Rogahlen, Groß Jahnen and Juckneitschen were also school locations .

Pastor (until 1945)

In Rogahlen / Gahlen, the clergy Otto Zeigmeister, Georg Bork, Johann Gemmel, Kurt Steinwender and Paul Ewert already served as vicars or auxiliary preachers before the official establishment of a pastor's office. After that, pastors were:

  • Johann Eduard E. Christoleit, 1913–1923
  • Gustav Boersch, 1923–1927
  • Johann Samuel B. Kurt Ehmer, 1927–1929
  • Kurt Hetz, 1932–1945

These were temporarily supported by the auxiliary preachers: Max Kuehnert and Ulrich Stotzka.

Catholic community

Before 1945 there were only a few Catholic church members in Rogahlen / Gahlen. They belonged to the parish in Goldap ( Polish Gołdap ) in the deanery Masuria II (seat: Johannisburg , Polish Pisz ) in the Diocese of Warmia . Mostly Catholic residents have lived here since 1945, for whom the once Protestant village church is now a place of worship. It is a branch church of Żabin in the Gołdap deanery in the Ełk diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland .

school

The school was founded in Rogahlen as early as 1740. Later it was divided: in Wittgirren (1938–1945 Wittbach , since 1945 Widgiry) the students who were close to Lithuanian went to classes, in Rogahlen those of the more Masurian villages.
