Ruslan Ponomariov Olehowytsch ( Ukrainian Руслан Олегович Пономарьов , scientific. Transliteration Ruslan Ponomar'ov ; Russian Руслан Олегович Пономарёв Ruslan Olegovich Ponomariov * 11. October 1983 in Horlivka , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian chess player .

Life

In 1994 he finished fourth at the U12 European Rapid Chess Championship in Paris . In 1996, at the age of twelve, he became European youth champion in the U18 age group, the following year he was world youth champion in the U18 . In 1998 he was named the youngest grandmaster at the time.

In 2002 he won the title of FIDE world champion . In the course of efforts to reunite the two world championship titles competing from 1993 to 2006, Ponomarev should play a competition against Garry Kasparov in 2003 , but this did not materialize because Ponomarev did not accept the contracts and requested changes.

At the 2005 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk , Ponomarjow took second place. In the knockout tournament with 128 participants he was defeated in the final by the Armenian Levon Aronjan after a playoff in rapid chess . With this result, Ponomarjow qualified for the 2007 candidates' tournament in Elista , where he failed in the first round, in a duel over six games, against the Russian Sergei Rublevsky with 2.5: 3.5 (+0 = 5 −1). At the 2009 World Chess Cup he was able to advance to the finals, but lost there after a playoff against Boris Gelfand . In 2007 , 2011 and 2013 Ponomarjow also took part in the World Chess Cup . While he reached the quarter-finals in 2007 and finished fourth in 2011, he failed in the second round in 2013 to Daniil Dubow .

On July 25th, 2010 he won the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting , a category 20 tournament , with 6.5 points, ahead of Lê Quang Liêm with 5.5 points, Wladimir Kramnik and Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov with 5 points each from ten games. His winning game against Kramnik from this tournament was voted the best in Volume 109 of the Chess Informator . In June 2011 he won the national championship of Ukraine in Kiev with 8.5 points from eleven games.

His best world ranking position was 6th from April to September 2002 and from April to June 2006.

National team

Ponomarev participated with the Ukrainian national team in the 1998 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2010 , 2012 and 2014 Chess Olympiads . He won with the team in 2004 and 2010 and reached third place in 1998, 2000 and 2012, in the individual ranking he won on the second board in 2000 and came second on the second reserve board in 1998. He also took part in the team world championships in 2001 and 2005, where he won with the team in 2001 and achieved the best individual result on the second board in both participations. He took part in European team championships in 1999, 2003 and 2011 , and in 2003 he achieved the second-best individual result on the first board.

In the Ukrainian team championship Ponomarev played in 2000 for the Momot Chess Club Donetsk Region , in 2007 for the master Keystone Kiev , with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup in the same year and in 2009 for the PVK Kiev , with which he was also champion. He took part in the European Club Cup from 1999 to 2002 for Donbass Alchevsk . In the Russian team championship Ponomarjow played in 2006 for Yunilain Samara , in 2008 for Spasio Moscow and from 2010 to 2012 for Tomsk-400 , with whom he was champion in 2012 and in 2011 and 2012 participated in the European Club Cup. In the Czech extra league, Ponomarjow has been playing for the team from Výstaviště Lysá nad Labem , with whom he became Czech team champion in 2019, since 2011 , in the Chinese team championship since 2013 for Jiangsu Green Sheep Springs . In Spain he played from 2006 to 2010 for the team of CA Magic Mérida , with which he became champions in 2006 , 2007 and 2009 and took part in the European Club Cup in 2008, in 2011 and 2012 he played for Gros XT , with which he became champions in 2011 , 2015 for Sestao Fundacion EDP and 2017 for CAC Beniajan Duochess . In the German Bundesliga , Ponomarjow has been playing for SV 1930 Hockenheim since 2017 .

Private

Ponomarjow lives in Bilbao . He is married and has a son.
