history
The former name of this originally Gallo-Roman settlement was Azy-sur-Ixeure , then Azy-aux-Amognes , the name part Azy being derived from the Roman general Azyus , who is said to have commanded a Roman camp in this area. After the establishment of a separate parish, the name of St. Benignus was included in the place name, who has made a name for himself in the missionary work of Burgundy. In the 13th century, the lords of Asnois built the first fortifications in the village and thus secured their fiefs . Louis XV finally elevated the rule to marquisate .

economy
In the 18th and 19th centuries, there was intensive iron production in the area. The iron ore mined in the area was smelted and forged in many small hammer mills . With the emergence of industrialization , production was no longer economical and was discontinued. Today the population lives mainly from agriculture , whereby the breeding of Charolais cattle is particularly noteworthy. Viticulture has always been practiced here, but today this only affects country wine of lower quality, which is produced as a sideline or for personal consumption.
