The Sambódromo in Rio de Janeiro , with its full name Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí (hence often called Sapucaí for short ), officially Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro , is the grandstand street in the city center of Cidade Nova , initiated in 1983 by Governor Leonel Brizola and built in 1984 by Oscar Niemeyer , in which the parade and competition of the samba schools called Desfile takes place in the carnival . The arena is around 700 meters long and seats 88,500 people. Before the Sambodromo was built, the parade took place on Avenida Rio Branco in the center of Rio.

Similar structures with the same function were also built in other carnival centers. The most important is the Sambodromo do Anhembi in São Paulo .

The samba competitions

The official carnival parades take place annually on four consecutive nights before the start of Lent . During this period, samba schools compete against each other in the Sambódromo from 8 p.m. until the early hours of the morning. The organizational process is divided into the performances of the samba schools in the Grupo de Acesso A on Saturday, the highlight with those of the Grupo Especial on Sundays and Mondays and finally those of the Grupo de Acesso B on Tuesday. The samba schools present themselves there for 90 minutes each. Up to 6,000 dancers and samba drummers perform in the parades and are awarded prizes by a jury. Admission prices start at the equivalent of € 3 in the cheapest category.
