Sioux County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Fort Yates . The entire county is part of the Standing Rock Reservation , which also extends over parts of South Dakota.

The county is located in southern North Dakota, bordering South Dakota and has an area of 2922 square kilometers, of which 89 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Morton County , Emmons County , Corson County, South Dakota, Adams County, and Grant County .

Sioux County was formed in 1915. It was named after the North American Indian people of the Sioux .

According to the 2000 census , Sioux County had 4,044 people in 1,095 households and 871 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.59 percent Native American, 14.34 percent white, 0.02 percent African American, 0.02 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,095 households, 48.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 39.1 percent were married couples living together, 29.1 percent were single mothers, 20.4 percent were non-families, 16.6 percent were single households and 4.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.63 and the average family size was 3.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was made up of 40.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 11.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 16.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 5.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 104.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county was $ 22,483 , and the median income for a family was $ 24,000. Males had a median income of $ 22,039 versus $ 19,458 for females. The per capita income was $ 7,731. 33.6 percent of families and 39.2 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 44.4 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 25.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
