Maryam (sura)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maryam ( Arabic مريم, DMG Maryam  'Maria') is the 19th sura of the Koran , it contains 98 verses . The sura is named after Maria or Maryam , the mother of Jesus Christ . Her preaching falls in the second Meccan period (615–620), with the exception of verses 58 and 71.

After the introductory basmala and five mysterious letters , the sura can be divided into three sections. Verses 2–40 mention Zakarīyā and his son Yaḥyā , whereupon the birth of Jesus under a palm tree is described. Jesus is referred to as the son of Mary ( ʿĪsā ibn Maryam ), but specifically not as the son of God . The second part, with verses 41–65, describes Abraham , who said goodbye to his idolatrous father with the word Salam , before finally separating from him, as well as other prophets such as Moses , Ishmael and Idris . The final part from verse 66 onwards answers questions about the resurrection and warns of the last judgment .
