an-Nadschm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An-Nadschm ( Arabic النجم an-Naǧm  'The Star') is the 53rd sura of the Koran , it contains 62 verses . The sura belongs to the first Meccan period (610–615), with the exception of verse 32 and - according to some commentators - also of verses 33–41, which are considered to be Medinic . The title refers to the first verse.

The introductory oath on the falling star serves as an affirmative reference to Gabriel . The prophet's encounter with the angel of Revelation takes up the first 18 verses and increases from verse 13 to describe the ascension of Muhammad . The further course (verses 19-25) turns against the goddesses Lāt , ʿUzzā and Manāt , who were worshiped by the polytheists in the Kaaba , as well as against the unbelievers (26-32). With references to "the leaves of Moses and Abraham " the human responsibility is emphasized: "that no burden-bearing soul will bear the burden of another", as well as the unfathomable work of God. The sura closes with another announcement of the “approaching hour” and a call to repentance .
