The Determination - Insurgent (Original title: The Divergent Series: Insurgent ) is an American science fiction film from 2015 . The director Robert Schwentke produced the film in cooperation with the film companies Summit Entertainment and Red Wagon Entertainment. It is based on the novel The Determination - Deadly Truth by Veronica Roth and is the sequel to the feature film The Determination - Divergent from 2014. The film was shown in German cinemas from March 19, 2015. It opened in theaters in the United States on March 20, 2015.

action

After her conflict with Ken leader Jeanine Matthews and the escape from Chicago, Tris Prior is more than ever between the fronts of the factions. Together with her boyfriend Four, her brother Caleb and the Ferox Peter, she fled to the Amite faction. But here, too, the Ken and the renegade Ferox turn up and search the camp. Peter betrays the friends and they have to flee from the enemy.

They can save themselves on a train to Chicago, where they meet the non-attached, from whom they are brought to their camp after Four identifies himself as Tobias Eaton, son of the leader of the non-attached. His mother Evelyn wants to start a war against Jeanine. Four, Tris, and Caleb leave to go to the Candor. On the way there, Caleb leaves the group because he wants to take care of the home.

Tris and Four meet many old friends at the Candor's. She wants to hand over the leadership of the Candor immediately to Jeanine. However, Four suggests trying a truth serum on them. During the public interrogation, Tris has to admit in front of Christina's eyes that she killed Will. When the Ken attack all Candor and kill indefinite people who do not meet Jeanine's specifications, Tris and Four flee back to the non-attached.

Evelyn summons Tris to leave, as she puts the non-attached in danger. Tris faces Jeanine and Ken. Here she meets first Peter and then Caleb again, both of whom have taken Jeanine's side. She is forced by her to submit to the test program, which some indefinite people have already failed. It should open a message from the "builders" of the Chicago faction society. Tris cannot stand either and seems to have died in the process. Peter shows it to the captured Four and changes sides again. He explains to Four that he gave Tris an anesthetic before the test. While the Ken are chasing them, Tris tries the test program again and can play the message.

The message is that the factional society is only a kind of test of humanity, whether it can manage to live together tolerantly. The indeterminate is not the fault in it, but the solution. There is a call to leave the city because there are still people outside.

When she sees this, Jeanine orders the message to be destroyed and Tris and Four to be killed. Just in time, the combined non-attached and Ferox show up and prevent this by taking power. The message from the builders is shown publicly everywhere on Jeanine's screens. So many people in Chicago set out to leave the city. The film ends with Evelyn killing Jeanine.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 30 percent of the 165 reviewers gave the film a positive rating. In summary, it says: "Shailene Woodley gives everything, but The Destiny is still a huge step backwards for a franchise that is struggling to stand out from other dystopian youth book adaptations."

The New Yorker wrote: “The film has little substance and hardly any depth, but Woodley with her extraordinary attitude simulates something like drama,” and the New York Post stated even more harshly: “Not even Shailene Woodley can make the unbearable one To save the film. "

The film received a positive review from the Chicago Sun-Times : “Anyone who likes non-stop action, pretty stunning special effects and solid acting by the young protagonists” “will not be disappointed”. Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter thought the film was "a leaner and more powerful proposition than its predecessor". But she criticized that it was not enough “to balance the oppressive we-take-ourselves-too-seriously” and “to pave the holes in the premise”.

Martin Schwickert from epd Film is currently criticizing the first half of the film, in which “there is too little time for the characters to reflect on themselves between the action scenes”. He finds words of praise for the "maturity of the romantic relationship between Tris and Four, who always meet at eye level and understand their love more as mutual trust-building than as a hormonal obsession". He also praised “the relaxed approach to gender issues as a matter of course, with which the most important positions of power in society of the future were occupied by women”.

Sequels

As it became known in April 2014, the film adaptation of the third and last part of the book series will be split into two parts. Part 1, again directed by Robert Schwentke , was released in cinemas in March 2016 under the title The Determination - Allegiant . Part two, The Destiny - Ascendant was originally scheduled to appear in June 2017; Due to the unexpectedly low box office results for Part 1, it is not yet clear whether Part 2 will even be released in theaters or whether it will only be released as a TV film. A possible spin-off series might be conceivable.
