The main crossings and junctions

Colorado

Highway 36 near the small town of Lyons on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains .

In Colorado , the 100 km section from Boulder through the greater Denver area to Byers is built like a motorway.

A few kilometers after the start of Highway 36, this leads through the small town of Estes Park and there in a south-easterly direction to Lyons . Then it goes straight south and reaches the developed section in Boulder. This is divided into four parts:

  • the 29 km long Denver-Boulder Turnpike from Boulder to Westminster , which is subject to a fee ,
  • the 3.2 km long former Colorado State Highway 382 from Westminster to Welby ,
  • the 8 km congruent section of Interstate 270 from Welby to Denver and
  • the 60 km congruent section of Interstate 70 from Denver to Byers.

As of 2005, the overlapping sections on Interstate 70 and Interstate 270 are no longer marked as US Highway 36.

The remainder of the highways in eastern Colorado that runs through the Great Plains is again only marked as Highway 36. The road runs through the sparsely populated area as a conventional two-lane country road. A few kilometers east of the junction with US Highway 385 , Highway 36 passes the border between the states of Colorado and Kansas .

Kansas

The entire stretch of the highway runs through Kansas through very sparsely populated areas along the northern border to the neighboring state of Nebraska .

The first city in Kansas is St. Francis from where Highway 36 runs in a straight line east. In Oberlin crosses US Highway 83 , in Norton of US Highway 283 and Phillipsburg of US Highway 183 before in Smith Center opens from the south. This now runs together with Highway 36 to the east, only to turn north after 19 km.

After the highway now further proceeded straight to the east, now crosses in Belleville of US Highway 81 , which according to Salina and Wichita , the largest city of Kansas, leads. Highway 36 continues straight east and meets intersecting US Highway 75 at Fairview . Further east cruises at Hiawatha of US Highway 73

East of Wathena , the road becomes four lanes and approaches the Missouri River . Behind Elwood , a bridge crosses the river that forms the border between Kansas and Missouri .

Missouri

The Pony Express Bridge , on Highway 36 to the Missouri River crossing and from Kansas to St. Joseph in Missouri leads

Highway 36 runs through Missouri through the cities of St. Joseph , Cameron , Monroe City and Hannibal . This stretch was known as Route 8 from 1922 to 1926 . It is planned to expand the entire section of Highway 36 through Missouri to four lanes.

To Missouri, Highway 36 leads over the Pony Express Bridge , which crosses the Missouri River and leads to the city of St. Joseph. Because of the connection to the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad , the Pony Express used to run from here as a post line to the west.

Interstate 229 and US Highway 59 intersect in downtown St. Joseph . A little later, a bridge leads over US Highway 169 . US Highway 71 , which runs jointly with Interstate 29 , is crossed under on the western edge of the city .

The four-lane stretch ends a few kilometers to the east. Highway 36 continues straight east, crossing US Highway 69 in Cameron and Interstate 35 on the eastern outskirts . Further east cruises at Chillicothe of US Highway 65 . The road continues on the southern edge of Long Branch State Park pass and crosses a few kilometers east in Macon to US Highway 63 .

US Highway 24 joins Monroe City and continues eastwards together with Highway 36. A few kilometers before Hannibal, Highway 24 turns north again.

Further east, Highway 36 passes the Hannibal Regional Airport. North of the city center, Highway 36 runs after the junction with US Highway 61 together with Interstate 72, which is currently being expanded . Via the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge , which spans the Mississippi River , Highway 36 and Interstate 72 leave the state of Missouri in the direction of the state of Illinois on the opposite bank of the river .

Illinois

Most of Highway 36 runs through the state of Illinois together with Interstate 72.

The road continues straight east. 19 km northeast of Pittsfield the road crosses the Illinois River . US Highway 67 crosses southwest of Jacksonville . Further east, Highway 36 and Interstate 72 jointly reach Springfield , the capital of Illinois. The road passes the city and intersects Interstate 55 . After 60 km to the east, Highway 36 exits Interstate 72 and passes through downtown Decatur , where US Highway 51 intersects.

Highway 36 passes Decatur Airport and leaves the city in a south-easterly direction. Later the course changes again to the east. Before Tuscola, US Highway 45 crosses Interstate 57 east of the city . At Chrisman the US Highway 150 crosses and after another 12 km in an easterly direction is the border between the states of Illinois and Indiana .

Indiana

In Dana , the highway runs through the first town in Indiana. East of it, Highway 36 crosses the Wabash River in Montezuma . In further east Rockville crosses US Highway 41 , the US Highway 231 a few kilometers after passing the Cecil M. Harden Lake .

After Highway 36 continued straight east, the city of Indianapolis, the capital of the state of Indiana, is reached. Here, Highway 36 is part of the bypass and goes south around the city. The bypass passes the Indianapolis Airport and meets Interstates 65 , 70, and 74 and US Highways 31 , 40 , 52, and 421 .

At Lawrence , Highway 36 leaves the bypass and heads northeast out of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. At Pendleton the road turns east again. In Losantville crosses US Highway 35 and Lynn of US Highway 27 , before heading to another 11 km the border between the states of Indiana and Ohio is achieved.

Ohio

After Highway 36 first passed through some smaller towns, Greenville was the first major city in Ohio to be reached. There, Highway 36 meets US Highway 127 and a number of secondary roads. The road runs to the east and crosses in Piqua to Interstate 75 . US Highway 68 crosses in the center of Urbana . Further in an east-northeast direction, Highway 36 runs together with US Highway 33 as a bypass north around Marysville . In Delaware , Highway 36 meets US Highways 23 and 42 .

After Highway 36 passed through Alum Creek State Park , Interstate 71 crosses . After initially heading south-east, direction swings back to east-north-east and reaches Mount Vernon , where the road runs through the city center. US Highway 62 crosses in Millwood . The road now runs in a south-easterly direction and passes the northern outskirts of Coshocton , where the direction changes again to the east. Behind Newcomerstown crosses Interstate 77 and the road leads back to the northeast. In Uhrichsville , the eastern end of Highway 36 is reached at the junction with US Highway 250 and Ohio State Route 800 .
