ShowView
ShowView [ ˈʃoʊˌvjuː ] (also: VCRPlus , Videoplus , G-Code ) is a system for simplifying recording programming for television programs with video recorders and DVD recorders , which is offered by TiVo Corporation (formerly Gemstar International Group).
Working principle
A one to nine-digit code number is generated for each television broadcast, which contains the day, the station, the start time and the duration of the broadcast in coded form. This ShowView codes are usually in the program magazines published.
A VIDEO-compatible recorder can decode this code number and extract the information it contains about a program (station, broadcast date / broadcast time, broadcast duration) for the purpose of timer programming.
The ShowView code assumes a standardized assignment of programs to program positions. If this does not match the programming of the video recorder, the assignment must be changed once by entering the so-called ShowView guide number or by correcting the programming. This guide number is also called the Guide Channel Number (GCN).
ShowView is not the same as VPS . ShowView and VPS are independent systems that complement each other but have nothing to do with each other. ShowView was developed to simplify the timer programming of video recorders and works even if no VPS data is transmitted from the transmitter. VPS, on the other hand, controls a recording that has already been programmed (with or without ShowView). In contrast to VPS, the recorder programmed with ShowView does not recognize a program relocation.
There are now algorithms with which up to eight-digit codes can be decrypted and encrypted.
History and Related Systems
Gemstar introduced ShowView in 1991 under the name VCRPlus in the USA , in 1992 under the name Videoplus in Great Britain and in 1993 as ShowView in the German-speaking area. The systems, while based on the same idea, are not completely identical. In particular, the code base was adapted to the specific national television conditions.
The license to print the ShowView codes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is distributed by the Munich- based company Kipkakomiks .
In current devices, ShowView is increasingly being supplemented or replaced by the Electronic Program Guide (EPG), which allows a program to be programmed by selecting it from a list. In the field of digital television , a system comparable to ShowView is known under the name TV-Anytime .
The advantage of ShowView is that it is not necessary to scroll to the desired program or programs that are not yet listed in the EPG can be programmed.
