The traffic department of the Dortmunder Stadtwerke DSW21 is a partner company in the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), which handles local passenger transport in the city of Dortmund and the surrounding area. There are overlaps with neighboring transport companies.
The Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG (DSW21) operates a total of eight light rail lines (see also: Dortmund light rail ) and 76 bus routes . In 2018, it carried around 130.3 million passengers on its 1107.6 kilometer network and covered around 20,780,000 kilometers. It used 47 trams, 74 light rail cars and 172 buses for transportation.
The company is a member of the Eastern Ruhr Cooperation .
history
Beginnings
The origins of the Dortmund public utilities go back to 1875. In that year, the city of Dortmund began negotiations with the entrepreneur Georg Soenderop from Berlin about the construction and operation of road and rail lines in Dortmund. After the contract was concluded on March 19, 1881, Soenderop opened the first horse-drawn tram line from Steinplatz via Münsterstrasse to Fredenbaum , a popular excursion destination at the time, on June 1 of the same year . Due to the intensive use of the railway, the line, which was initially built as a single track, was quickly expanded to two tracks. On August 13th, the second route from Dorstfeld (Emscherbrücke) across Rheinische Strasse, Hellweg and Kaiserstrasse to Funkenburg , a large gastronomic establishment, was opened. The third line went into operation on September 21. It began on what was then Bahnhofstrasse, which led from the Burgtor between the tracks of the Cöln-Mindener and Bergisch-Märkische railways to what was then the station in an island location, and continued via Brückstrasse, Betenstrasse and Märkische Strasse to Kronenburg (an event location with a theater). Six days later, the extension of this line to Hörde was inaugurated, the terminus was initially at Hörder Markt in the (present-day) intersection of Seekante, Faßstrasse and Hörder Hafenstrasse.
From October 4th, the company was called Dortmunder Straßenbahn AG for horse and steam operation . Accordingly, steam-powered freight trains also ran on the company's tracks from this point on. Contrary to expectations, however, freight traffic did not go as expected, so that a number of tracks specially laid for freight traffic had to be dismantled. In 1890, goods traffic was abandoned and the locomotives and wagons were sold. On December 18, 1881, there was another name change to Deutsche Lokal- und Straßenbahngesellschaft .
General local and tram company
In September 1892, the newly founded Allgemeine Lokal- und Straßenbahngesellschaft (ALSAG) took over the company. The company operated many tram networks across Germany, for example the Hörder Kreisbahn in Hörde and its district from 1899 to 1928 and the tram in Duisburg from 1891 to 1923, also there as in Dortmund initially (from 1886) its forerunner German Local and Tram Company . ALSAG was renamed ALOKA again in 1923. It was economically closely intertwined with the influential industrial bank Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft and the AEG owned by Emil and Walther Rathenau .
In the Hörde area, the lines were now operated with steam due to the incline. Horse trams continued to run in the narrow streets of downtown Dortmund. However, it quickly became apparent that the horse-drawn trams were no longer able to cope with the steadily growing traffic. So it was decided in 1893 to electrify the existing lines. On March 1, 1894, the horse-drawn tram lines and, from 1896, the steam line were electrified. In this context, a further route was moved in Hörde via the later Semerteichstrasse (then Viktoriastrasse) to the Hörder center on (today's) "Schlanken Mathilde", where from 1899 it was possible to change to the Hörder Kreisbahn . The old line remained in operation for a few years.
Also in 1896 the construction of a circular railway around the city center began. This ran largely on the Wallring, with two deviations: In the east of the city center, the route from Neutor (confluence of Märkische Strasse into Wallring) only followed the Ostwall a short distance and then turned into Löwenstrasse to the previously important one, which has not stopped since 1963 passed through Dortmund Süd station of the former Royal Westphalian (KWE) and Rhenish (RhE) railway companies. From there it went on the Holy Way to the Ostentor , straight ahead through Weißenburger Strasse to Schwanenstrasse and through this westward to Schwanenwall . In the north-west (at the main train station) the Ringbahn originally followed the Königswall (which was lost in the Second World War) , and later Schmiedingstraße , which was not in its current location, but in the course of today's Königswall.
More lines were added. From the Funkenburg to Körne , from Steinplatz via Steinstraße , Roßstraße , Schützenstraße and Mallinckrodtstraße to the harbor and from Wallring to the Friedrich-Wilhelm block . This line was put into operation in 1898, originally branching off the slightly older ring tram at the Wißstraßentor (later Grafenhof , now the place of the old synagogue ). It then led over Hohe Straße past the stone tower to the Friedrich-Wilhelm block (today Signal-Iduna-Park station ) on the Bergisch-Märkische Bahn (today Hellwegbahn). From there it was not far to the excursion destination Steinerne Brücke (over the Emscher), where, in addition to the restaurant of the same name, there was the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Thal summer tavern , large gardens with a (ice-skating) pond and a cycling track. From February 4, 1899, it was possible to switch to the meter-gauge Hörder Kreisbahn to Brünninghausen , Barop and Hombruch . Later, it was as straight traffic lane between castle gate and Wißstraßentor the Hansastraße cross struck by the city, which should then take the tram. In 1905 it was still under construction, already marked on a city map from 1910.
The Cologne-Mindener Railway posed a problem at that time . It divided the network into two parts. There was only a barrier-secured connection via the railway system at the castle gate. This could only be used by empty wagons. This led to the fact that the lines of the two networks ended in front of the barrier and the passengers were forced to change over the level crossing to the car on the other line. Since this barrier was also often closed for a long time, there were always delays.
On March 31 / April 16, 1898, the city of Dortmund had the general local and tram company to further expand the Dortmund network. That happened u. a. by building the route to the Westfalenhütte (Hoesch). The original route at its beginning north of the city center is not entirely clear, partly due to temporary construction works during the elevation of the station and its access routes, but also because maps and city plans were not and are not always exact: it is not uncommon for planned routes to be completed shown, and / or already completed were not drawn in immediately. Two route variants are shown on a map from 1901: starting immediately north of the then barred level crossing of Münsterstrasse at the Burgtor, then immediately turning right through Kapellenstrasse, which has now disappeared, along the Cöln-Mindener railway line. Second, coming from Reinoldistraße, crossing the (old) castle wall straight ahead in the course of today's Leuthardstraße (then also Kapellenstraße). Before the tracks of the Cöln-Mindener railway line were lifted and the tram to the Westfalenhütte was tackled, the Kapellenstrasse led at this point with a bridge over the lower-lying railway line, as can be seen from a city map from 1890. Both route variants then lead into a road that has also disappeared diagonally (Burgmundastraße) in the direction of Rolandplatz, further on Rolandstraße (in a different location than today) and the disappeared Papengarten via Oestermärschstraße, Borsigplatz and Osterholzstraße to the left to the final stop in Eberhardstraße . On a later city map from 1905 only the second variant is (still) shown, on a third from 1910 both route variants again, the first now being based on the railway overpass, which had been completed in the meantime (1910). In addition, now - after the elevation of the railway systems - the new section of the district railway to Schulte-Rödding in Bornstrasse was included. All three maps (1901, 1905 and 1910) show the original route of the ring tram and the route to the Friedrich-Wilhelm block.
The current, possibly temporary, lines in the direction of Fredenbaum, Westfalenhütte and harbor in 1905 are described in a city guide as follows: a) Reinoldikirche line, Kapellenstrasse – Steinplatz, after Fredenbaum. b) Line Kuckelke – Kapellenstrasse – Burgmundastrasse – Rolandstrasse – Papengarten – Oestermärschstrasse to Eberhardstrasse (Hoesch). c) Line Steinplatz – Steinstrasse-Rossstrasse – Schützenstrasse to the harbor.
County lines
Outside the narrow Dortmund city limits, the district of Dortmund operated its own standard-gauge tram lines in the north, east and west from 1904, but these did not form a coherent network: The first line from December 14, 1904 was the extension of the city line from Fredenbaum to Brambauer , on January 21, 1905 a route from Minister Stein via Kemminghausen, Schulte-Rödding, Kirchderne and Altenderne to Lünen Markt, on August 28, 1906 from Körne to Wickede and on November 26 to Unna , and in 1907 the extension from Bornstrasse to Westfalenburg and in 1908 from the Westfalenburg to Schulte-Rödding . The line from Castrop to Schwerin also opened in 1907, and from Ickern and Henrichenburg to Castrop in 1910 . In 1911, the routes from Schwerin via Marten to Dorstfeld and from Marten to Lütgendortmund Bhf. (Today Germania) were opened, there it was possible to switch to the meter-gauge network in the direction of Lütgendortmund Markt and further (since September 11, 1902, Märkische tram , later Westphalian tram and from 1938 Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG ).
Urban direction
Since the city had contractually stipulated a possibility of takeover after 25 years in 1881, the trams became the property of the city in 1906. In 1910 the biggest obstacle for the trams was removed: The new, higher-level central station was finished and all the railway tracks were now on embankments and bridges - at Burgtor in 1905, at Schützenstraße in 1909. This enabled the northern and southern route networks to be connected, e.g. . B. with the new route from the train station to Schützenstraße (1911). At the same time, the lines parallel to the railway were shut down. On August 31, 1913, the route from Kronenburg via today's Westfalendamm and Marsbruchstrasse to Aplerbeck and the branch route to the racetrack were inaugurated. This established a connection to the Hörder Kreisbahn in Aplerbeck . At the end of 1914 the company operated nine lines.
Merger with the district railway
In 1914, the city of Dortmund wanted to incorporate eight communities in the Dortmund district. The district tied its approval to the merger of the city trams with those of the district . The Dortmunder Straßenbahn GmbH was founded. The new company operated a total of 16 lines after a few missing links between previously separate networks had been built.
At the beginning of the First World War , the line between Fredenbaum and Schulte-Rödding was closed due to inefficiency. In 1916 the network was expanded from Westfaliastraße (at the harbor) to Huckarde and in 1922 from Dorstfeld to Huckarde . In 1923 the first express tram was built from Huckarde via Nette and Westerfilde to Mengede . In 1925, the route from Lünen- Markt to Lünen Bhf. Was extended , and Hombruch was connected to the network in three stages: 1925 to the southwest cemetery, on January 23, 1927 to Barop and on November 15 to Hombruch. Also in 1927 the lines from Hoesch through Springorumstraße to Rüschebrinkstraße in Scharnhorst and from Zeche Minister Stein to Lindenhorst went into operation. However, the planned extension to Annen was not implemented. The plans for an express tram to Bonn also disappeared again in the drawer.
Takeover of the Hörder Kreisbahn
In the south of the city of Dortmund, the district of Hörde remained until its incorporation in 1929, which from 1899 had built up an extensive network of meter-gauge trams, the Hörder Kreisbahn . When the incorporation of most of the district and the district town of Hörde was imminent, the concession and the route network were taken over by the Dortmunder Straßenbahn GmbH on April 14, 1928. At that time it comprised the lines Asseln - Aplerbeck - Schwerter Wald , Aplerbeck - Hörde - Brünnighausen - Barop - Hombruch / Eichlinghofen , Hörde - Schwerte , Hörde - Wellinghofen and Brünninghausen - Block Friedrich-Wilhelm .
Depression and World War II
During these years the company mainly tried to double-track heavily frequented lines and to convert the lines that were taken over by the Hörder Kreisbahn from meter gauge to standard gauge . Due to the economic recession towards the end of the 1930s, not all of the planned construction measures were implemented. Some lines were even shut down and replaced by bus lines.
On January 1, 1939, the Dortmunder Straßenbahn GmbH became a company owned by the city. After the city of Dortmund bought the shares in the cities of Castrop-Rauxel , Lünen and Unna , they became part of the Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG .
In 1942, the Stadtwerke began to put trolleybus routes into operation. The first line was opened on May 29, 1942, ran from Rheinische Strasse via Nikolaikirche, Dortmund Südbahnhof (on Heiligen Weg, east of today's Dortmund Stadthaus train station), Ostentor and Borsigplatz to the Westfalenhütte and carried the line designation A (later 44). Due to war damage, operations were temporarily suspended on October 6, 1944. The second line runs from September 7, 1942 on the inner city ring and was called I. It was shut down on October 6, 1944 and not reopened. The third route led from the Volkspark via Brünninghausen and Kirchhörde to Schanze and was called Line B (later 43). It was set up in 1943 and replaced the existing meter-gauge tram line as far as Brünninghausen. In 1945 it temporarily ceased operations. After the heavy bombing in May 1943 and especially after the attack on March 12, 1945, which almost completely destroyed the city center, operations were stopped.
The time of reconstruction
On May 18, 1945, the Stadtwerke resumed tram operations on the route between Hörde and Aplerbeck . They fell back on the railways that had survived the air raids almost undamaged in the depots outside the city and on the city limits. Towards the end of the year operations were resumed on eight sections of the network. From September 1949 the network was almost completely restored.
From 1949, the city council decided to redesign the city center and make it suitable for cars. Wide roads were built in north-south and east-west directions, on which the trams should run on their own tracks if possible.
The trolleybus line A (later 44) was rebuilt after the war and resumed operation on April 1, 1950, initially only to the Ostentor. Line B (later 43) was put back into operation on August 27, 1947 and extended to the main train station in the following years until 1958. The fourth line C (later 47) was added from October 16, 1949. It also replaced a meter-gauge tram line on the route from Eichlinghofen via Barop , Brünninghausen to Hörder Brückenplatz and from June 30, 1954 to Aplerbeck. In the west it was extended once more to Oespel and relocated in the factory area from Hochofenstraße to Nortkirchenstraße.
New construction and decommissioning
In the mid-1950s, new construction projects began, until the mid-1960s, as a rule, it was still more as a tram route, sometimes on a special track and only in exceptional cases as an under-paved railway. On November 1, 1957, the new line in the Ruhrallee from Neutor to a turning triangle on Markgrafenstraße went into operation. On April 30, 1959, the Federal Garden Show was followed by the extension of this route via the Westfalenpark to the Hacheney zoo . This route was already developed like a light rail without intersections. This also included an operating route to the Rote Erde stadium and the new turning loop there with parking facility. Further conversions took place in the course of the construction of the Ruhr Expressway in Dortmund, for example the 200 m long tunnel in the course of Ardeystraße with the underground stop Westfalenhalle in 1967.
At the same time, numerous lines of the former district railway and some depots on the outskirts of Dortmund were closed: In Castrop-Rauxel on July 1, 1958 the Habinghorst – Henrichenburg line, on May 1, 1960 Habinghorst – Ickern, on December 31, 1960 Castrop, Münsterplatz– Habinghorst and on July 1, 1962 Kirchlinde – Castrop. In Dortmund, Marten – Kirchlinde and Marten – Lütgendortmund Bf. (Now Germania) followed on December 1, 1963. The Wickede – Unna section followed on July 1, 1965, Kirchderner Strasse – Scharnhorst (through the Hoesch site) on March 1, 1970, Aplerbeck – Schwerter Wald on April 1, 1971, Minister Stein – Lindenhorst on June 3, 1973; October 1974 Nussbaumweg – Rennbahn and on May 15, 1976 Kirchderne – Derne via Derner and Altenderner Straße. In the 1960s and 1970s, a number of lines were relocated in the city center and some routes were abandoned, e.g. B. in Kaiserstraße (August 9, 1964, replaced by Hamburger Straße), Steinplatz – Gronaustraße (November 29, 1964) and on the Freistuhl (August 3, 1975, detour via Westentor). When Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG joined the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) on January 1, 1980 , the nine remaining lines were given a line number that was increased by “400”.
The trolleybus lines also fell victim to the closures. 1961 line C (last 47) and 1966 line A (last 44) were discontinued. The last line B (last 43) was discontinued on July 17, 1967.
Light rail
The planning of a light rail network in Dortmund began as early as the 1960s. Due to the increasing car traffic, it was decided to relocate public transport to the so-called second level, i.e. underground. In addition, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was planning to set up a joint light rail network in the eleven large cities of the Ruhr area. In September 1969 the city council decided to start building an underground light rail system . Construction work began on October 22, 1969. The plan was to implement the project in four steps. The first thing to do was to build three underground light rail lines. These were the routes from Hörde to Fredenbaum, from Hacheney to Mengede and from Aplerbeck to the main station. Second, the tunnel from Hörde via the main train station to Mallinckrodtstrasse and the conversion of the lines in Aplerbeck, Fredenbaum and Westerfilde into a light rail. In addition, a central depot should be built in Dorstfeld. In the third phase, the routes from Grevel to the Westfalenstadion and from Wickede to Marten were to be relocated in tunnels. In the fourth and final phase, the last rails in the city center were to be removed and a tunnel opened from the city garden in the direction of Hombruch.
A total of 18.1 kilometers in the tunnel and 4.5 kilometers on the surface with a total of 40 stations were planned. Due to a lack of financial resources, not all planned projects were fully implemented. Despite everything, apart from parts of the U43 and U44 that run on the east-west route, all lines have been converted to light rail operations to this day. The latter have been running through tunnels in the city center since April 27, 2008 and are gradually being converted to a light rail-like operation on the routes on the surface using new Flexity Classic type mid-floor trams from Bombardier.
On May 10, 2008, a technical defect in a new car caused a cable to burn on the roof of the vehicle. After this defect, all six Flexity Classic were withdrawn from circulation. A check revealed that a defective connector had triggered the fire. Since this defect could not be found on the other five vehicles, DSW21 will be using the vehicles again in normal driving operation from May 14, 2008. 47 railcars had been delivered by 2012.
In June 2016, during the regular general inspections of the Flexity Classic tram vehicles, unusual rust damage on bogies and uneven floors were found. As a result of the necessary repairs, on the lines U43 and U44 z. In September 2016, for example, only 28 of the 47 wagons were used, which led to considerable restrictions and impairments. An emergency timetable has been set up until further notice.
H-Bahn
With the laying of the foundation stone for the H-Bahn on September 3, 1981, a new era began in Dortmund. The joint project between Siemens and the Uerdingen wagon factory was initially intended as a demonstration system. However, it has provided regular public transport since it opened. The route was opened in October 1982 for test drives on a 1.1-kilometer route between the southern and northern campuses of the University of Dortmund .
Passenger traffic began on May 2, 1984. At first, use was free and took place Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm. You then had to buy your own tickets for the journey, as the H-Bahn was not integrated into the VRR tariff. The railway later switched to the VRR tariff. As before, the H-Bahn does not belong directly to the Dortmund municipal utilities, but to the subsidiary H-Bahn-Gesellschaft Dortmund mbH . In 1991 the route was extended to Eichlinghofen and in 2003 to the Dortmund Technology Center . An extension to Barop and a connection to the Stadtbahn was planned, but has since been discarded.

During football matches or other major events in the Westfalenstadion , the U45 trains run from Fredenbaum to the “Stadion” station, which is the final stop instead of the “Westfalenhallen” station. The journeys of the U46 line were also extended beyond “Westfalenhallen” to the “Stadion” city station until 2006, since then the U46 has only operated between Brügmannplatz and Westfalenhallen at major events. The U45 trains also run to the Fredenbaum city station. In addition, additional electric cars run between Eving, Schulte Rödding and Hombruch, Grotenbachstrasse and reinforcement trains between Dorstfeld depot and Brackel. On the U45 and U49 lines, double traction units of the 38-meter-long eight-axle B80C / 8 are sometimes used, as well as triple units of the B80C / 6 in the past, which are now only used very rarely on the U41 between Hörde and the main train station.

In the case of football matches in the Westfalenstadion , additional buses run between Westfalenhallen and Herdecke Schanze via the stadium. There is also a university shuttle from Dortmund University to the stadium.
Night Express
The buses of the Dortmunder NachtExpress lines NE1 to NE9 as well as NE12, NE13 and NE22 start daily at 0:15 a.m. or 0:45 a.m. (depending on the line) from the Reinoldikirche pylon to their destinations. In the night from Friday to Saturday, they also start at 1:15 (1:45), 2:15 (2:45), 3:15 (3:45) and 4:15 (4:45) And from Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays also at 5:15 (5:45) and 6:15 (6:45). So-called feeder trips take place beforehand on lines NE7 and NE8. The buses start at 11:57 p.m. from Brünninghausen (NE7) or at 0:35 a.m. from Dortmund main station (NE8). This ensures that passengers from the Remydamm, Police Headquarters, Saarlandstrasse, Stadtgarten and Hauptbahnhof underground stations can make their first NachtExpress journeys on time.
The NachtExpress line NE11 starts daily at 11:46 p.m. at Castrop-Rauxeler Münsterplatz and runs from there to the Castrop-Rauxeler districts and back to Münsterplatz. At the weekend, this line continues to the Reinoldikirche in Dortmund, where it is integrated into the rest of the Dortmund night network. In the night from Friday to Saturday, it also starts at 12:15 a.m., 1:15 a.m., 2:15 a.m., 3:15 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., on the nights from Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays it also starts at 5 : 3 p.m. and 6:15 a.m. The last two journeys in each case end at Münsterplatz and do not return to Dortmund.
The journeys of the NachtExpress lines NE20, NE24, NE25 and NE40 start at different times in other parts of the city and mostly serve east-west or north-south routes as a supplement to the other NachtExpress lines. The NE22 is an exception here. It has recently started its route at Reinoldikirche, then takes on its old role as a supplementary line and then drives back again. For the other lines, there are connections to the NachtExpress lines from or in the direction of Reinoldikirche at certain stops, so that passengers can easily change from one to the other NE line. The NE20 service starts daily from Scharnhorst at 0:45 am, from Fri to Sat also 1:45 am, 2:45 am, etc. Lines NE24 and NE25 run once a day, line NE40 twice. On the nights from Friday to Saturday there are five (NE40) or six trips, on the nights of Sat / Sun and before public holidays there are even seven (NE40) or eight trips. Since October 16, 2017, line NE2 has also been running on weekdays at 0:04 and 0:34 a.m. from Borsigplatz in the direction of Reinoldikirche in order to better connect the Westfalenhütte logistics park. The NE8 line, on the other hand, has an additional trip to the university at 12:15 a.m.
As of October 16, 2017
Night express lines operated by other transport companies
