Virginia Berasategui Luna (born July 15, 1975 in Bilbao ) is a former Basque triathlete . She is world champion in the long distance (2003), European champion (2009, 2010) and Ironman winner (2004, 2005). Berasategui is ranked second in the best list of Spanish triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Her father Javier Berasategui was also a triathlete and he was the first Spanish athlete to compete in the Ironman Hawaii . Virginia Berasategui celebrated her first triumphs in 1986 in swimming and athletics. In 1988 she started her first triathlon.

World champion triathlon long distance 2003

Virginia Berasategui was third at the ITU World Championships in 1997 and again in 2002 and then world champion in the long distance triathlon in 2003 (4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running).

In 2005 she tested positive for EPO after the Ironman Lanzarote - the results were later canceled.

In 2009 she became European champion over the long distance triathlon in Prague and in November at Ironman Hawaii she reached third place and thus the first medal for a Spanish athlete. In August 2010 she was third at the ITU Long Distance World Championships in Immenstadt im Allgäu.

2013 doping ban

In May 2013, Virginia Berasategui was convicted of doping at the Bilbao Triathlon . In June, she announced that she had taken illicit substances, would forego a B-sample and end her triathlon career.

In May 2016 after her suspension expired, she announced that she wanted to start again as an amateur. In June she finished third in the middle distance on her return in the Bilbao Triathlon . It has not appeared internationally since 2016.

Virginia Berasategui lives in her native city of Bilbao on the north coast of Spain.
