The House of Representatives ( Arabic مجلس النواب, DMG Maǧlis an-Nuwwāb ) in the capital Cairo is the unicameral parliament of Egypt according to the Egyptian constitution of 2014 .

history

The House of Representatives was called the People's Assembly until 2012 ( Arabic مجلس الشعب Majlis asch-schaʿb , DMG maǧlis aš-šaʿb ), was the lower house in the Egyptian bicameral system and had more legislative powers than the Shura Council (the Egyptian upper house, which was abolished by the 2014 constitution). At that time the People's Chamber consisted of 508 members , 498 of which were elected by the people; the remaining 10 mandates were given by the head of state .

The last elections to the People's Assembly took place in winter 2011/12. However, the House of Representatives was dissolved on June 15, 2012 due to a ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court . The judges ruled that some articles of the electoral law were unconstitutional, as it was possible for political parties to nominate candidates for the third of the seats that the constitution allowed independent candidates. This violated the equality of choice. Thus, the composition of the entire lower chamber was illegal and new elections were necessary.

In the period that followed, new elections were repeatedly announced, but repeatedly postponed. Only after the adoption of the 2014 constitution did elections for the now so-called House of Representatives take place in late 2015 .
