Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If there's a suitable image, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion. Also, self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should be over 1,500 characters (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references), cite sources (these sources should be properly labelled, that is, not under an "External links" header), be no more than five days old (unless it was under 1,500 characters, and has been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days), and should not be marked as stubs. Articles with good references and citations are preferred to those without.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature.
  • Suggested facts should be:
    • Interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world.
    • Short and pithy (under about 200 characters).
    • Neutral.
    • Definite facts, mentioned in the article.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • Suitably freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) as the main page by policy can only have freely-licensed pictures.
    • Attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution.
    • Already in the article.
    • Relevant to the article.
  • Proposed lists should have two things to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults) and (ii) have non-stub text that brings out interesting relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Your entry may miss out on the front page if you don't respond to reasonable objections.

These are not terribly unique claims... might I suggest something like "is one of the few buildings on Central Park West with street-level retail space?"according to this--Father Goose 08:04, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it was interesting that a structure almost twice as large used three times as little wiring, whatever though. Who is the City Review? Is that reliable? Just curious .. . IvoShandor 08:05, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Infinitely more interesting than the some guy was a general on the front page right now, how unique do the claims have to be? I didn't realize it was that stringent around here. IvoShandor 08:08, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, 30 days does seem fast, especially for 1931. IvoShandor 08:12, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't get defensive, I just felt like neither blurb hooked me, and being a New Yorker, I felt like an article on a local building ought to have caught my attention. I don't know if 30 days is fast without more context, and I don't know why the extra wire is significant without knowing why the amounts needed were different (unfortunately, this information does not seem to be readily available). So I was just offering another take, which you are free to ignore.--Father Goose 11:18, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know the hail of comments seemed defensive, but if you have a better hook I am cool with it, really, no offense was taken, I was just confused as to your rationale. Now about that link you provided? Is it reliable? Who is it? If it isn't is there someone else saying it in a better more reliable place? Any comments. IvoShandor 11:35, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's more interesting that it was one of the first residential buildings to be built in Art Deco architecture when it had previously been used for just commercial buildings, and that most of the surrounding structures were built in the Beaux-Arts style. Any idea why it was the first Art Deco residential structure? Was it just coming into vogue at the time? --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:19, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can we get waiver on hook length rule here based on Ignore All the rules?
Else, we might need to consider the below, trimmed version of the hook:
I myself favor this last alternative, KNM: it is more interesting, and it is quite common for works to have immense names. There is also a problem that I glossed over when I contributed my share to that article: according to Cioroianu (who I used as a source), the full name of the document in its final version is, in fact, Expunere cu privire la programul PCR pentru îmbunătăţirea activităţii ideologice, ridicarea nivelului general al cunoaşterii şi educaţia socialistă a maselor, pentru aşezarea relaţiilor din societatea noastră pe baza principiilor eticii şi echităţii socialiste şi comuniste. No kidding. Dahn 11:50, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about saying that the speech was "influenced by the Juche philosophy of North Korean Eternal President of the Republic Kim Il Sung"? After all, that's where the idea came from (at least in part), so may as well give credit where credit is due :) Turgidson 13:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, Elkman. Whatever the admins can use that day is fine with me. How about:

I think it's sensible to have this instruction under #Suggestions. It's too bad that no one has yet created a feature that enables the number of characters and words in articles or parts thereof to be counted. Obviously the technology is available, as article histories now indicate the number of characters added or removed since the last edit. Cheers, Jacklee 02:48, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I might point out that winning two of fifteen matches is relatively commonplace in the sporting world, as there are always teams who are weaker than others. I hope a better hook can be found. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:14, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since you take care of DYKs, may I suggest reading the rules? Let me quote: "stubs, or other short articles that have been greatly expanded are also encouraged".-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  03:10, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"...other short articles..." This was not a short article when you started it. Sorry. howcheng {chat} 17:46, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In general, I don't mind how short long the article is as long as it is overwhelming new content. eg, 5kb -> 20+kb. Howver in this case it was 11.4kb -> 20kb, so it is not even majority new content. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess if you put it that way... I'll just sulk a little that my 5k->15k expantion of Polish Armed Forces in the East got discarded as well a few days ago :/ -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  03:26, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
