The Arts University College at Bournemouth (formerly known as The Arts Institute at Bournemouth) has been offering specialist education for over a century, and has a strong reputation both nationally and internationally for providing the creative industries with practitioners of the future. The University has gained a particular reputation in lens-based media and is now recognised as one of the best film schools in Europe, as well as being a Skillset Centre of Excellence. Graduates have been known to win the very highest accolades in film and media including BAFTAs, Oscars, Emmys and RTS Awards.

All 3000 students are based within one campus where students are taught art, design, media and performance. The College is located in Poole, next to Bournemouth University and Wallisdown.

The College has courses in the areas of Graphic Design and Film Production, as well as Modelmaking, Illustration, Photography, Costume with Performance Design, Fashion, Textiles, Arts and Event Management, Animation Production, Hair and Make-up,Acting, Digital Media Production, Visual Communication, Fine Art, Architecture and Interior Architecture and Design.

History

In 1964, Bournemouth and Poole College of Art was formed through the merger of Bournemouth Municipal College of Art and Poole College of Art. The name was changed to Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in 1980, and the first new building on the present campus was opened in 1984, built at a cost of £2.3 million.

In 1998, the name was changed to The Arts Institute at Bournemouth (AIB) and, in 2001, AIB became a higher education institution. One of only a few HEIs that focus exclusively on creative work in contemporary art, design, media and performance. In 2006 due to the growing reputation both nationally and internationally of AIB, Skillset granted the institute status as both a film and media academy.

The name changed to The Arts University College at Bournemouth in 2009 followed the acquisition of taught degree awarding powers in 2008.

Bournemouth Skillset Media Academy

The Bournemouth Skillset Media Academy, a partnership between the The Arts University College at Bournemouth and Bournemouth University, is the largest centre of professional higher education for the media and film industries in the UK, and offers education and training in creative media. The Academy was launched in 2006 as the Bournemouth Screen Academy by Skillset, as one of only four accredited institutions to be awarded both Screen and Media Academy status in the UK. This status enables the University to benefit from funding from Skillset and the UK Film Council.

The media academy also houses the National Centre for Computer Animation, an institution to further the research and training for computer animation and visual effects in computer games, television and feature film.
