The 1988/89 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the 16th season of the second highest German ice hockey division. At the end of the season, EC Hedos Munich made it to the Bundesliga , while the champions of the two seasons, Krefeld EV and SV Bayreuth , failed in the relegation round.

After the bankruptcy of the Heilbronner EC and the voluntary withdrawal of the Neusser SC and the SC Solingen , the ERC Sonthofen was finally determined as a relegated athlete in the league .

As in the previous season , the league was two-pronged, with both seasons starting with ten teams each. First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. The best four teams from both groups then took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga , while the remaining teams had to play for their starting place in the league in the relegation rounds in the north and south. The round was held in one group in the north and in two groups in the south.
