The eighth season of the real-time television series 24 began in January 2010 in the United States. The season is about efforts to protect the President of the fictional Republic of Kamistan from attacks during a peace conference. In Germany, the season was broadcast from March to June 2010.

action

The action takes place in New York City and 18 months after the seventh season , starts at 4 p.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. the following day.

History and initial situation

The counter-terrorism unit CTU was put back into operation. In the New York City office, Chloe O'Brian works under Director Brian Hastings. Ex-CTU agent Jack Bauer has not worked for the US government for some time, but is also in town that day. The administration of the now divorced US President Taylor has long been persuading the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan to have the United States monitor its nuclear energy development program in order to prevent the country from becoming a nuclear power . Kamistani President Omar Hassan and his wife Dalia have drifted apart, nonetheless they maintain the appearance of a healthy marriage.

4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Anil Kapoor , cast member of Omar Hassan

Taylor and Omar Hassan at a peace conference at UN headquarters , which received much media attention, agreed that Kamistan would give up its nuclear weapons program and have its nuclear power plants monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency under US leadership. The signing of the contract is scheduled for the following day . Omar stands for his decision in the negative criticism of both the domestic press and his brother Farhad Hassan, who represent the opinion to make Kamistan a subject of the USA.

Jack Bauer is warned by his former informant Victor Aruz about an attack on the UN headquarters in order to prevent the nuclear energy agreement and that the assassin is close to Omar. The assassin Davros wants to prevent Aruz from disclosing further information in the CTU and therefore kills Aruz.

In a secret vote with Davros, Farhad ensures that the US journalist Meredith Reed, with whom Omar has a secret love affair, is falsely accused of being an assassin and arrested. Because O'Brian, unlike Hastings, is not convinced of Reed's guilt, she and Jack's daughter Kim convince Jack to help her with the investigation and not fly to Los Angeles . By threatening to reveal his wrongdoing, Jack Hastings is given permission to help find the real assassin. Through this and by evaluating surveillance camera images, he can track down the house in Queens in which Davros has assumed the identity of a police officer - also through two murders.

Based on the falsified information that Reed incriminates and points to a bomb in the UN headquarters, Hastings has the building including the two presidents evacuated shortly before 7 p.m. Jack's warning to CTU agent Cole Ortiz that Davros is planning an attempt to assassinate the motorcade as a policeman who has been deployed for the evacuation, prevents Omar from dying in the explosion of the Davros remote-detonated bomb. After Farmer shot Davros, an examination of Davros' body reveals that he belonged to a Russian arms dealers syndicate and that he was recently contaminated with highly enriched uranium . Omar, who has meanwhile arrived at CTU, concludes that Russian arms dealers are the uranium owner because his brother was recently offered uranium from Soviet stocks. Dalia breaks up with Omar.

The ex- FBI agent Renee Walker, who investigated undercover in the Russian mafia years ago , is engaged by the CTU as an assistant in the investigation. In order to find the uranium, she begins again to investigate undercover, but with the help of Bauer, who thinks she is suicidal . After regaining the trust of the gun dealer and former lover Vladimir Laitanan, she puts him in contact with Bauer, who poses as a German arms dealer.

Jürgen Prochnow , actor of Sergei Bazhaev

Meanwhile, Farhad has fled to the Ukrainian nuclear arms dealer Sergei Bazhaev, from whom he, in consultation with Kamistani accomplices, buys the uranium fuel rods and orders them to be shipped to Kamistan without delay . Omar has opposition members arrested in his home country for their planned coup attempt , although he is in breach of human rights conventions and Taylor's advice. Taylor wants to dissuade the UK and other countries from not signing the peace agreement because of this. In addition, Omar has the Camistani UN delegate Jamot arrested as a precaution just because he has family connections to one of the arrested opposition activists.

Dana Walsh, engaged to Ortiz, works under a false name as a data analyst at CTU and hides from her colleagues that she helped her accomplice Kevin Wade years ago in a murder that put them both in jail. By threatening to make her real name Jenny Scott and their criminal past public, blackmailed Wade Walsh, him and his accomplice Nick Coughlin taking advantage of their privileges CTU theft in a warehouse with NYPD - evidence objects to allow.

10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Since Wade doesn't stop blackmailing Walsh even after the theft, she pursues the two of them in order to murder them. Ortiz, in turn, pursues Walsh after her absence from CTU is noticed. After she informs him about her false identity, there is an armed confrontation between them and the crooks, with Wade being stabbed by Coughlin and Ortiz being shot. To cover up the deaths, Walsh and Ortiz sink the bodies in a pond.

After Bauer arrives in Laitanan's hiding place, Sergei argues with him. Laitanan ceases to offer nuclear weapons and - having become suspicious of this - suspends the delivery of the fuel rods to Farhad. Walker, forced to have sex several times by Laitanan, vindictively kills Laitanan. Bauer is thereupon arrested by Bazhaev's accomplices who appear there in order to find the fuel rods. After being tortured on Bazhaev's behalf, he frees himself and overpowers Sergei, who then informs CTU of the location of the fuel rods in exchange for full amnesty .

The CTU finds the ISO container without the fuel rods. Sergei's son Josef delivers them to Farhad on his own account in order to get revenge on Sergei, who had previously shot his other son who was radically ill . Through Bauer's promise of amnesty, Josef is convinced that the fuel rods will be returned before he is shot by Samir Mehran, the leader of the Camistani secret agents who are responsible for the further transport of the fuel rods on Farhad's behalf. Since it is no longer possible to get the fuel rods to Kamistan due to the intensified state manhunt, Mehran plans to use them for a dirty bomb that is supposed to explode in New York. Farhad is against this intention, therefore flees and informs the CTU of the attack plan before he is shot by one of Mehran's accomplices.

Omar also arrests his bodyguard Tarin Faroush after he criticized his decision to torture Jamot's family. Faroush, however, escapes from custody with the help of his lover, Omar's daughter Kayla. To help find Kayla, Dalia returns to Omar.

Supported by Bauer, Walker testifies at CTU that he did not kill Laitanan out of revenge, but out of self-defense. Rob Weiss, the Chief of Staff of the White House , demands that Hastings make personal consequences for the failure of the uranium seizure, and therefore wants to use Walker as a scapegoat . When Hastings realizes that he cannot cope with the terrorist threat without Bauer, he hires him again as a CTU agent by promising him not to investigate the allegations against Walker any further.

After Ortiz and Walsh return to CTU, Walsh is visited by probation officer Bill Prady, who is looking for Wade and who is about to uncover Walsh's support for the burglary of the evidence base.

In order to get to Mehran and the uranium, the CTU lures one of its accomplices to the hospital to which Farhad's body was taken after the targeted dissemination of false information that he was still alive. Bauer is able to prevent the accomplice Marcos from suicide by threatening to injure his mother. Before Marcos' accomplices detonate his explosives vest remotely and thereby kill him, he reveals that Tarin Faroush is one of the Kamistani assassins. Shortly afterwards, he kidnaps Kayla to see Mehran, who, by using her murder as a threat , is trying to blackmail Omar into a top-secret document that was stolen from the Pentagon . The hostage-taking is secretly used by Mehran to stage Kayla's escape: the terrorists let her escape to CTU in a car that contains an electromagnetic pulse bomb that explodes in the CTU access tunnel .

4 to 10 a.m.

The bomb explosion leaves three dead; CTU is paralyzed and robbed of its ability to use its sensors to detect radioactive radiation. To help Jack, O'Brian is speeding up the hardware repair work by implementing a faster but more dangerous solution than the NSA repair team. Meanwhile, Bauer and Ortiz's CTU team followed the terrorists to the banks of the East River . While Mehran and Faroush drive the fuel rods to Manhattan in a rubber dinghy , their accomplices hold up the CTU agents by force of arms, from which they can soon free themselves with the help of the Walker, whom O'Brian calls for help.

After Prady discovers Walsh's involvement in the burglary of the evidence store, Walsh murders him and hides his body. Only now does it emerge that Walsh is working as a mole for Mehran at CTU . As such, it enables the terrorists to use the fuel rods to escape from CTU and police. Taylor instructs Jack Bauer to personally escort the Hassans during their evacuation from UN headquarters and, shortly after 5.15 a.m., refuses to give in to Mehran's demand for the extradition of Omar Hassan, whom he sees as a traitor, within an hour.

US General David Brucker, a member of the National Security Council convened by Taylor , convinced Chief of Staff Weiss, citing the Nuremberg Principles , to jointly deceive Taylor and ensure Omar's extradition to Mehran in order to prevent the bomb from exploding. To keep their plan a secret, they withhold the suspicious US Secretary of State Ethan Kanin from the medical help he needs because of a heart attack . Bauer and Walker prevent the kidnapping of Omar by US special forces. Around 6 a.m., Faroush armed the Dirty Bomb on the Upper West Side . Since Omar does not want to accept the death of tens of thousands, he stands up against his family, Bauer and Walker and surrenders himself to the terrorists, so that Mehran has the ignition sequence canceled seven seconds before the planned explosion.

Taylor arrests Brucker and Weiss, with whose information CTU finds and secures the dirty bomb. The pursuit of Omar, under terrorist control, carried out by Bauer and CTU is sabotaged by Walsh's disclosure. This allows Omar to be brought to Mehran before Faroush commits suicide. Mehran tortures Omar with the aim of revoking the peace treaty. Walsh is arrested at CTU after an unsuccessful escape attempt in which she shoots several guards. The amnesty extorted by the president for her crimes does not apply because the CTU can no longer save Omar in time: The terrorists deceive CTU with a video that is distributed as a webcast and execute Omar as a traitor shortly before the CTU team arrives at her hiding place around 7.55 a.m. Mehran survives, his accomplices die.

In order to achieve the peace treaty, Taylor and Jamot convince Dalia to succeed Omar with the support of their party. Since the Russian government is not convinced of Dalia's suitability and is afraid of losing control over Kamistan, Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Novakovich threatens the US President to vote against the peace treaty. In order to convince the Russian government, Taylor enlisted the help of former US President Charles Logan, who still has good contacts in Russia and to whom she inevitably allows room for maneuver. Logan hopes to use his help to rehabilitate himself politically.

The head of Homeland Security blames Hastings personally for the failures of CTU that day and replaces him as director with Chloe O'Brian.

Pavel Tokarev, a contract killer who works for Novakovich, poisons Mehran - disguised as a medic - at the site of Omar's murder and is noticed by Walker. To prevent Walker from identifying him and to prevent Novakovich's connection to the terrorists from becoming known, he shoots her in Bauer's apartment shortly after she had sex with Bauer. Because of Walker's last words to O'Brian asks farmer Sergei Bazhaev about how she knew the man from her undercover time in the Russian mafia. Threatened by Bauer to murder his family, Bazhaev reveals that the Kamistani terrorists were acting on behalf of members of the Russian government and that Walsh was used as a spy on their behalf.

Logan blackmailed Novakovich into voting for the peace treaty by threatening to reveal evidence of Novakovich's personal ties to the Kamistani terrorists. Logan wants to prevent Walsh from being interrogated by Bauer about the people who are cooperating with the Kamistani terrorists in the Russian government. To this end, he successfully demands from Taylor that Walsh will not be interrogated and that Bauer be stopped from further investigations. Logan is forced to divulge the information he has long known that Russia is supporting the Kamistani terrorists. In order to ensure the peace treaty, Taylor agrees to Logan's demands to remove Bauer from the investigation and to leave Dalia in the dark about Russia's links to Omar's murderers. Because Bauer does not agree with the decision of the president, he escapes from the arrest she placed him under.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Taylor agrees with Logan's proposal that Walsh be declared an enemy combatant and interrogated by a private security company before she disappears permanently. This is to ensure that the information does not become publicly known. Because Kanin does not agree with the cover-up maneuver, he resigns as foreign minister, albeit under a pretext. At around 11 a.m., the company's men began waterboarding Walsh to provide information that high-ranking Russians supported the terrorists .

O'Brian's plan to trap Bauer to prevent him from finding Walsh fails. Bauer then unofficially allows Ortiz to help him kidnap Walsh from the company. Threatened with death, she leads Bauer and Ortiz to a safe deposit box, from which she takes the video recording with the evidence before she can escape with it and is executed by Bauer shortly before 12 noon.

Because Bauer is no longer under CTU control, Taylor accepts Logan's suggestion that Logan's assistant Jason Pillar direct the search for Bauer at CTU. But Logan's secret aim is to have Bauer killed as soon as possible and thus to protect Novakovich.

The video captured by Bauer von Walsh proves that Tokarev is Walsh's contact and that Walker's murderer. With the aim of capturing Tokarev, Bauer lures journalist Reed to a shopping mall with a promise to give her the video. Bauer and his old friend Jim Ricker can take Tokarev under their control and shoot the Russian agents sent by Pillar to kill Bauer. Bauer gives Reed the video evidence before he tortures and torments Tokarev, including with an open fire, for the purpose of naming his clients. Tokarev refuses to testify and is killed by Bauer - in full revenge for Walker's murder. Using the SIM card previously swallowed by Tokarev , Bauer learns that Tokarev was last on the phone with Logan.

Taylor follows Logan's suggestion and, in violation of the freedom of the press , has the FBI prevent the publication of the information Reed has received from Bauer. Bauer, however, ambushes Logan's motorcade at a narrow point and is able to force him to admit that Novakovich had commissioned the Kamistani terrorists with the murder of Omar. Bauer then executed Novakovich and most of his bodyguards with vengefulness. Through a bug hidden on Logan, he learns from a phone call between Logan and Russia's President Yuri Suvarov that the latter is Novakovich's client. Before she was arrested, Reed informed Kayla Hassan about Russia's involvement in the Omar murder. Having this information, Dalia threatens the US president with not signing the peace treaty. Taylor threatens the Kamistani president with a military retaliatory strike against Kamistan if she does not sign.

Meanwhile, O'Brian and Ortiz are secretly working at CTU to end the cover-up. While the UN Secretary-General begins the public signing ceremony at the UN headquarters and Suvarov arrives there, Bauer allows himself to be smuggled into a neighboring building of the UN headquarters by the Pillar, who is threatened with death by him. From there he wants to shoot Logan and Suvarov. O'Brian succeeds in persuading Bauer to give up in order to avoid his killing, but fails with Ortiz to ensure the recording of the phone call between Logan and Suvarov in front of Pillar's followers. Taylor is silently persuaded by Logan to have Bauer kidnapped and killed because of his knowledge of Suvarov's responsibility for Omar's murder.

Taylor, who has meanwhile become remorseful because of the cover-up, refuses to sign the internationally binding peace agreement at the last minute . She announces that she will face the public prosecutor's office. Logan wants to thwart his and Pillar's arrest, so he first executes Pillar before attempting suicide himself . Taylor foiled Bauer's execution at the last minute and made him flee from the American and Russian law enforcement agencies.

reception

Reviews

In the eighth season, the real-time series format remains with its "extremely effective cliffhangers [...] extremely well worth seeing". The season is "attractively produced" and looks more like an expensive feature film than a television series, but is "sometimes extremely stupid and with outrageous, implausible action mechanisms". Particularly harsh criticism has been leveled several times at the subplot with CTU data analyst Dana Walsh, which is an "absurd, predictable B-story with an inevitable ending"; the twist with the "incredibly stupid, docile and weak-willed" character played by Katee Sackhoff "simply makes no sense at all". The eighth season is "full of hackneyed clichés, predictable twists and turns and unbelievable action", but "still great TV junk food ". The season is overall "weak", especially in the first two thirds it shows how "restrictive" the real-time series concept can be. With the return of ex-President Logan and Jack Bauer's “killing spree, driven by bloodthirstiness”, a “final furioso” with “high entertainment, high tension and a lot of emotion” started.

Awards

The season was nominated once in five categories at the Emmy Awards 2010 . There were two Emmy awards: one for the best musical composition (episode 24) and one for the best sound editing (episode 13). It remained with nominations in the categories of Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Episode 22, Gregory Itzin ), Best Sound Mixing for a One-Hour Comedy or Drama Series (Episode 24) and Best Stunt Coordination (Episode 3).
