The second season of the US real-time television series 24 consists of 24 episodes and premiered in the United States between October 2002 and May 2003 and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland between March and May 2004.

In its first half, the season is mainly about the efforts of the partially undercover CTU agent Jack Bauer to find an atomic bomb brought into the USA by terrorists and to prevent it from exploding. After the bomb detonated over an uninhabited area, the main aim of the second half of the season is to prevent a US military retaliation in the Middle East based on falsified evidence . In the course of the season it turns out that the NSA boss, the ex-wife of the US president and a consortium of oil magnates speculating on war are involved in the plan with the atomic bomb.

action

The action takes place 18 months after the first season, starts at 8 a.m. and lasts until 8 a.m. the following day.

8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Using torture , the NSA received the information that terrorists wanted to detonate a nuclear weapon in the USA that day . In order to stop the attackers, the NSA urges Jack Bauer to support the CTU investigation immediately. Suffering emotionally from the death of his wife, Jack Bauer has not been active at CTU for over a year. It was only at the personal intercession of David Palmer, now US President , that Bauer was persuaded to take up the job. Palmer, with his staff temporarily ruling from a bunker in Oregon , wants to avoid panic among the population because of the terrorist threat and therefore prevents reporter Ron Wieland from broadcasting a report about the threat by having him locked up.

In order to track down the attackers, Bauer covertly investigates a group of criminals. In order to win their trust, Bauer brings them the self-sawn off head of a man who, intended as a key witness against group leader Joe Walt, had been held prisoner by the FBI until then and had shot the Bauer without authorization. The group, of which Bauer is now a member, carries out a non-nuclear bomb attack on CTU with the purpose of obstructing the CTU's investigation; the CTU building is badly damaged, at least 30 dead and many injured. Due to the large losses, the CTU can only work to a limited extent at first.

CTU head George Mason is investigating the nuclear threat in Panorama City . While examining the building in which the terrorists prepared the nuclear explosive device, he comes into contact with plutonium , which is why he soon threatens to die. Despite increasing symptoms of radiation sickness , he continues his work at CTU.

Sarah Clarke , starring in Nina Myers, and Xander Berkeley , starring in George Mason

In order not to expose Bauer during his investigation, the NSA Deputy Chief Rayburn prevents Bauer's warning of an attack on the CTU from being passed on to Palmer and CTU in good time. After Palmer has fired him because of this, the NSA boss Roger Stanton Rayburns responsibilities in the government bunker.

After the assassination attempt on CTU, Bauer learns about Joe Walt's whereabouts. After Bauer identified himself as a federal agent and shot the other group members - mainly for self-defense - he tracks down Walt in his hiding place. Before Walt suicide commits, it informs farmers about the fact that Nina Myers, former CTU employees and murderer of Jack's wife, the group has sold the CTU building plans. Although Jack's job is now done, he - full of anger at Nina - continues to work and interrogates her at CTU.

As the nanny of Megan, the young daughter of the Matheson couple, Kim Bauer and Megan flee from their father Gary, who abuses both his wife and daughter. Supported by her friend Miguel, Kim and Megan want to leave town with Megan - also on Jack's warning of the atomic bomb explosion - they use Gary's car. On the way, they are stopped by a police officer for exceeding the speed limit, who discovers the bloody corpse of Megan's mother in the trunk. Miguel and Kim are therefore taken to a nearby police station as murder suspects.

The findings of the US government and CTU include that the nuclear weapon is supposed to detonate somewhere in Los Angeles and that the terrorist group Second Wave , which apparently comes from a certain, but not named, Arab- Islamic country and from the internationally wanted Syed Ali is managed, is considered a possible mastermind. Palmer is threatening the country's prime minister with immediate retaliation if it does not stop the attack. Later, despite Stanton's security concerns , Palmer and the country's ambassador agree to a limited exchange of information between the two countries to speed up the investigation. The ambassador dies shortly afterwards in the violent crash of his helicopter.

David Palmer's ex-wife Sherry appears in the government bunker and wants to regain his trust. To this end, she provides him with explosive information obtained using her contacts in government circles, including the fact that Stanton is having military personnel evacuated from LA. Because David Palmer does not agree with a possible mass panic and he feels ignored, he lets Stanton reverse the order. Sherry's information also includes that parts of David's administrative apparatus are trying to scheme against him in order to remove him from office. Despite concerns that Sherry was intriguing again himself, David found her a job near him so that she could investigate further.

David Palmer now suspects Stanton of being involved in the alleged conspiracy and the helicopter crash and uses his chief of staff, Mike Novick, to monitor Stanton. Because questions about the whereabouts of the reporter Wieland arise in the media, David allows Sherry to deal with Wieland. In doing so, she guarantees Wieland access to government buildings if, in return, Wieland does not make public about his capture. A little later, Wieland is free without David's authorization and reports on the terrorist threat on television.

The wedding between Marie Warner, daughter of the wealthy businessman Bob Warner, and Reza Naiyeer, who is employed by Bob's company, is planned for the evening. Marie's sister Kate suspects that Reza has ties to terrorists because of Reza's Arab descent and therefore has a private detective hired by her investigate him. These result in business transfers between the Rezas and Syed Alis accounts. In the meantime, the CTU has also become aware of these transfers, which is why Reza is interrogating them. Threatened with his arrest, Reza admits that the transfers were only covered by him, but were commissioned by Bob Warner. At CTU, Bob Warner testifies that Bob and his company are advising the CIA . At the same time, Kate and the private detective are kidnapped.

In return for the extensive presidential impunity from the crimes she has committed, Nina guides Jack to the man Mahmud Fahim, who had organized the sale of the building plans, who is hiding in Visalia . After Jack and Nina have arrived there by plane, Jack takes Fahim prisoner and Nina's attempt to escape fails. On the return flight, Myers secretly talks to Fahim about Syed Ali and fatally injures him despite being handcuffed. With the promise to divulge further information leading to the assassins, she blackmailed a change of course of the plane to San Diego . On the way there, the aircraft begins to crash with severe engine damage.

Meanwhile, three of the terrorists are transporting the nuclear weapon through LA. Two of them shoot each other during an argument.

4 p.m. to midnight

The plane with Jack and Nina on board was hit by a surface-to-air missile . Both survived the crash in rough terrain largely unscathed and were thus able to escape being shot by a special military command that quickly arrived at the crash site. After shooting the Special Forces soldiers together, Nina takes Jack hostage and extorted from President Palmer immunity from the prosecution she would face for her intended murder of Jack Bauer. In return, she gives Syed Ali's address. Because Jack is tricking Nina, she cannot shoot him and she is captured again. Jack recognizes the dead soldiers as belonging to the Coral Snake special unit , which is secretly financed by the NSA.

Kate Warner and the private detective are now in the hands of Syed Ali, who tortures both of them to determine how far they have come to him. After Syed Ali had the detective shot and left the building, Jack and a CTU team rescue Kate from Ali's helper, who committed suicide. With Kate's help, CTU seizes Ali in a mosque . Jack tortures him in order to tell CTU the location and time of the detonation of the atomic bomb. Demonstrated on video, the CTU staged the execution of his son for Alis Schein . Only when Jack threatens to shoot his second son does Ali admit that the bomb is at a certain LA airfield from which it is to be flown for dropping over downtown Los Angeles .

Roger Stanton denies knowing about the Coral Snake task force. With the increased distrust of Stanton, David - actively supported by his ex-wife - has Stanton investigated. Sherry, however, appears to be collaborating with Stanton and warns him of law enforcement. It becomes clear that Stanton has claims to the presidency. Despite Sherry's objection, David has Stanton arrested. After Stanton has denied links to the atomic bomb attack, David Palmer has him unofficially interrogated by the Secret Service man Simmons and tortured with electric shocks . Stanton admits that he has been supporting the second wave terrorists for weeks in creating the atomic bomb in the USA. As part of the action, he wanted to prove that David's defense policy was too passive. Order of the Coral Snake unit, to whose remaining members he no longer has any contact, be it to protect the bomb, but ultimately to prevent its explosion.

David Palmer's press officer Lynne Kresge believes she can prove Sherry's conspiracy with Stanton. Instead of her informant, Sherry assures her that she is collecting evidence against a conspiracy allegedly led by Stanton to overthrow the president, but that she herself is not part of the conspiracy. Unaware of this information, David lets his ex-wife go to his operations center for further investigations, much to the displeasure of Kresge, who is not convinced of Sherry's innocence.

Reza and a CTU agent search the computer data in Bob's company. Shortly after discovering evidence against Marie, they are shot dead by Marie, who works for Syed Ali and who appears to have been radicalized after her mother's death . Meanwhile arrived at the airfield, the CTU finds six Coral Snake members murdered. In another hangar , Marie and a helper arm the bomb by inserting the detonator. When the terrorist tries to take off in a plane, CTU and police stop the plane and discover a dummy bomb in it. Confronted with the failure to find the bomb and the deaths of the Coral Snake members, Stanton tells David that the task force actually consists of seven people and that David should consult Sherry for more information.

When David Palmer confronts his ex-wife, she denies knowing about Stanton's plan regarding the atomic bomb. In return, she and a CIA employee can credibly demonstrate that they have been collecting information together for four months to prove Stanton's plan to infiltrate David's presidency. They began gathering evidence after Stanton tried unsuccessfully to get Sherry to support his plan. Because David distrusts Sherry, he expels her from the government bunker.

Meanwhile, Mason prevents the higher authority from taking control of the CTU in view of the personnel losses. Shortly afterwards, due to his increasing physical decline, he transfers the CTU management to Almeida and drives to the airfield. There, Kate accidentally recognizes her sister, which means that CTU can arrest her and interrogate her. At around 10 p.m., CTU discovered the atomic bomb. It won't deactivate and will explode in an hour. Jack decides for himself as the person who will fly the bomb with a Cessna into the Mojave Desert in order to detonate it there without further significant loss of life.

Elisha Cuthbert , starring Kim Bauer

While Kim and Miguel to identification procedures are driven into a police station to LA, they try out the feared explosion radius of the bomb to escape and cause to an accident of it transported patrol car. Kim escapes from the scene of the accident into the forest. Trapped in an animal trap while fleeing from a puma , she is soon freed by a withdrawn bachelor , whom she tells about the possible nuclear explosion. A little later, out of loneliness and under the pretext that the atomic bomb had just exploded, he lures her into the self-made air raid shelter , but releases her again after she has recognized his lie. As a hitchhiker, she drifts away from LA

After Mason has identified himself as a stowaway in the plane Jack has flown , he convinces Jack to fly the plane to the destination himself, because he will soon die anyway. After Jack jumped off by parachute, watch it, Kim and the Air Force One flying to LA Palmer at 22:59 with the explosion mushroom cloud .

While investigating a hard drive seized in Syed Ali's apartment, the CTU found an audio recording on which Ali was speaking with ministers of three Middle Eastern countries in Cyprus and which proves that these countries were also responsible for the bombing. While CTU experts have established the authenticity of the recording beyond any doubt, Syed Ali claims that it was forged. When Ali was about to be relocated from CTU to Guantanamo , he was shot and killed by sniper Jonathan Wallace, who is the missing seventh member of Coral Snake and who murdered his six colleagues to prevent them from securing the bomb. He telephoned Bauer to claim that he had placed the fake picture in Ali's apartment, and in return for proving the falsification, demands that Bauer hand over Kate Warner to him. By questioning the authenticity of the Cyprus photo, President Palmer doubts the demand - particularly from Vice-President Jim Prescott - to carry out a military strike against the three countries in retaliation for the atomic bomb explosion.

Kim witnesses a self-defense shooting in a liquor store by a man who then takes her hostage.

0 to 8 a.m.

After Kim escaped from the hostage-taker, the police storm the store, nervous about the deteriorating general security situation. The police drop the murder investigation against Kim. Over the phone, Kim learns from Miguel, whose lower leg has now been amputated because of the car accident , that he does not want to see her again.

Jack brings Kate to Wallace, who informs him that he should work on behalf of powerful men to see that the bomb explodes and that the Cyprus picture is hidden in Ali's apartment. This was intended to burden the three Middle Eastern countries in order to drive them into war against the United States. The men in the background speculated on the increase in the value of the oil deposits on the Caspian Sea . An hour earlier, however, his clients wanted to have him killed unsuccessfully, which is why he now sees himself threatened and wants to leave the country using the travel privileges granted to the Warners by the CIA. Knowing that Wallace will kill Kate in the process, Jack agrees to the trade, which is his only way to obtain evidence of the forgery of the Cyprus picture.

Several US bombers - seasons are the three Middle Eastern states on the road and only a few hours flight away. Meanwhile, racist and xenophobic riots and looting are taking place among citizens, first on the US east coast , and later also in California , and President Palmer disregards the Posse Comitatus Act and uses the National Guard to contain it.

Tobin Bell , cast member of Peter Kingsley

The CTU employee Michelle Dessler hides her colleagues Almeida and Carrie Turner about helping Jack and is therefore shadowed by them. Jack, Kate, Wallace and Yusuf Auda, an exchange agent from Ali's country, engage in a gun battle with snipers who want to kill Wallace at the meeting point in Studio City . When the shooting became known, Dessler's dizziness was also noticed. Wallace dies in hospital when shot. With his last tip, Jack discovers the memory chip on which the evidence of the falsehood of the Cyprus recording is located. Jack sends Kate and Auda to CTU with the chip while he himself distracts the men who wanted to kill Wallace on behalf of oil magnate Peter Kingsley. Jack is captured by them and tortured to the point of cardiac arrest in order to find the chip . Kingsley's men have Bauer reanimated by a doctor who then helps him overpower the men.

Meanwhile, Kate and Auda are attacked and beaten up by racists because of his Middle Eastern figure. To prevent the gangsters from stealing the chip, Kate leads them to their house to give them money for the chip. Informed about Kate's plans by the seriously injured and dying Auda, Bauer cornered the gangsters in Kate's house and was able to seize the chip. Investigations by the CTU show that although the audio recordings are no longer legible due to severe damage, data fragments suggest their programmer.

At CTU, the newly arrived Ryan Chappelle forbids investigators Almeida and Dessler, who have now fallen in love, to help Jack, and wants to support the government's efforts to carry out the military strike. Almeida and Dessler try to fend off Carrie Turner, who disagrees with Dessler as her superior; nevertheless, Chappelle resigns Almeida as CTU head.

Because of Bauer's information, convinced that the admission to Cyprus was forged, Palmer gave the order to stop the attack on the Middle Eastern states. Several members of his government disagree, however, also because they consider him weak in leadership and see the attack's beneficial surprise effect at risk. Without Palmer's knowledge, Prescott is therefore working to remove the president from office under the 25th Amendment . Novick also supports this plan and therefore has the opposing Kresge locked up in a storage room. Escaping from there, Kresge is pushed down the stairwell by her guard and seriously injured. Novick prevents Palmer from finding out about Prescott's plan.

Meanwhile, Vice President Prescott has called the cabinet in Washington, DC to put it to a vote on the impeachment proceedings against Palmer, who is attending the meeting with Novick from LA. In order to incriminate Palmer, Prescott has the taping of what he believes was the unlawful torture of Stanton. Stanton, who also took part, now claims to have known nothing of the plan regarding the atomic bomb before his interrogation and to have only answered the expected under the torture. Palmer recognizes the record as incomplete and accuses Stanton of lying. In the vote that took place a little later, a slim majority of cabinet members voted against Palmer's remaining in office. After Palmer's disempowerment, Prescott had himself sworn in as the new president and the flight of the US bombers continued. Nevertheless, at Prescott's request, Palmer feigned president to protect the bomber pilots when he asked the Turkish prime minister for overflight rights .

In the apartment of the hacker Alex Hewitt, who, on behalf of Kingsley, forged the image of Cyprus with the votes of three Middle Eastern ministers, Jack unexpectedly meets Sherry Palmer as well as Hewitt. She tells Jack that she helped Kingsley with his for-profit atomic bomb threat to end David's presidency and get revenge on David for divorce. She now wants to prevent conversations between her and Kingsley from becoming public that prove her cooperation with him and which Hewitt had also recorded. He can first be persuaded to demonstrate the falseness of the Cyprus admission in court. While Jack is distracted by a phone call with Kim, in which he guides her in the self-defense-related shooting of Gary Mathison in his house, Hewitt stabs Sherry - panicked by law enforcement - and escapes. Seriously injured while on the run, he dies after Chappelle has ordered back the rescue helicopter sent by Almeida and Dessler . Almeida and Dessler are arrested for disobeying their orders.

Jack lets Sherry arrange a meeting with Kingsley to get Kingsley to confess to the forgery of the Cyprus recording and so that Sherry can get the incriminating original audio recordings from him in exchange for Hewitt, whom Kingsley wants to eliminate and his death he doesn't know anything yet. On the way to the meeting, Jack, meanwhile suffering from arrhythmia due to torture , and Sherry have an accident in their car. Meanwhile, the US Attorney General confirmed Kingsley's connection to the Coral Snake unit to Novick, which is why Novick is now letting CTU support Jack's investigation. At the meeting point at the LA Coliseum , Kingsley made the crucial CTU-recorded confession to Sherry, so Prescott had the attack called off minutes before it was scheduled to begin. In a bitter firefight against Jack and CTU forces, Kingsley and his men are defeated.

Sherry is arrested. Chapelle reinstates Almeida as CTU head. The re-appointed President Palmer rejects the resignation of Prescott and the ministers who had voted against him; he only rebukes them. However, due to a loss of trust, Palmer dismisses Novick. Those backers who commissioned Kingsley with the plan regarding the atomic bomb have carried out an acid attack on President Palmer after the attack on the Middle Eastern states has not materialized .

production

With the start of the season's action at 8 a.m., the intention was to use the longer daylight in autumn for daytime shots and to shoot the night scenes on the shorter winter days.

During the filming, Carlos Bernard injured his ankle while exercising, which meant that the script had to be adapted. For the destruction of the CTU headquarters shown in episode 27, 93 different explosions were triggered. Backdrops for Air Force One were used that had already been used in the movie Air Force One .

Reviews

Compared to the first season, the second season is darker and told at a faster pace and offers a more realistic ambience; she also shines because she doesn't make it easy for herself. Instead of black and white, there are only gray areas, the story and characters are complex and the viewer is given food for thought. On the other hand, it is a narrative weakness that every suspect interrogated by Jack Bauer always dies shortly before an important secret is revealed, only to “leave him a single clue to the next suspect”. The new characters would help the season develop, but the subplot with Kate Warner in the first third of the season seems out of place and only helps to understand the other storylines afterwards. The story of Kim Bauer is particularly sharply criticized: The plot is mocked as "silly escapades", "worm appendix", "annoying, annoying, boring" and "lame". It mostly serves as a " comic relief for an incessantly cruel litany of violence and political turmoil" that filled the other main storylines, and "after a credible beginning" develops "increasingly silly". In addition, Elisha Cuthbert's character makes no sense because of the lack of connection to the main plot, is exposed to one cliché after another and only acts reactively instead of proactively.

Awards

Out of ten nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award , there were two awards in 2003, namely in the categories of Best Musical Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore ) for Episode 15 and Best One-Camera Editing for a Drama Series for Episode 22. The season was also nominated in the categories of Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Drama Series .

In 2003 and 2004, 24 was also nominated five times for the Golden Globe Award , which, in contrast to the Emmys, is not given based on the television season, but on the calendar year. In both years the series was nominated in the categories of Best Actor (Kiefer Sutherland) and Best Drama Series.
