Celtic and Alemannic grave finds and stone ax discoveries in the Böttinger Beilstein cave , however, have an earlier settlement dating back to the Stone Age through. From 1253 the area came under the protection of the Zollern to the Beuron monastery , after changes of ownership to the diocese of Constance and then to the knight Konrad von Wytingen, it remained in the possession of the Lords of Enzberg from 1409 until it came to Württemberg in 1805 . In the Kingdom of Württemberg it had been assigned to the Spaichingen District Office since 1810 . The village had to deliver interest and tithe to the respective rulers until 1848, as well as perform labor services. Enzberg's patronage law still exists today. During the regional reform in 1938, the place became part of the Tuttlingen district .

Whitsun 1977 the sixth alliance meeting took place in Böttingen with 3700 overnight stays in the tent camp.

Former military base

Between 1963 and 1976, Böttingen was the location of a launch system for military missiles . The facility, which comprised several locations in the Böttingen and Dürbheim districts, was built between 1962 and 1963 for the French troops. After France withdrew from NATO , French troops cleared the facilities in December 1966. In 1969, the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) position, also known as the X-Area , was obtained from US units and expanded into the Pershing I position. On February 22, 1970, there was a near disaster. During improper maintenance work on the nuclear warhead of a Pershing missile that was in QRA status, it fell to the ground. The launch area was cleared and the position was hermetically sealed. The feared detonation did not take place. The accident was initially given the status of 'Broken Arrow', but was later downgraded to the 'Bent Spear' category. In 1976 the location was cleared and relocated to Inneringen .
