Branč (until 1927 Slovak "Berenč"; Hungarian Berencs ) is a municipality in Slovakia with 2221 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is about 12 kilometers southeast of Nitra .
It consists of the two suburbs Branč and Ve Ortká Ves, which was incorporated in 1925 (German Großdorf , Hungarian Nyitranagyfalu ).
history
The place is an old settlement area. There was a settlement in the Neolithic Age , several settlements in the late Neolithic , and a very important Bronze Age settlement and burial site.
The place was first mentioned in 1156 as Brencu . The etymology is controversial, the original form was Branč (with later change from ra to re ). From the 12th century it belonged to the royal property.
A castle of the same name stood by the village for a long time (not to be confused with Branč Castle in Podbranč ), which was first mentioned in the 13th century. Today there is almost nothing left of her.
