The 1966/67 Celtic Glasgow season was the 79th season of the Scottish football club from Glasgow since it was founded on November 6, 1887. This season, Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup in the final against Inter Milan in Lisbon , making the winning team nicknamed the Lisbon Lions . In the 1966/67 season, the club also won four other titles; the National Championship , the National Cup , League Cup and Glasgow Cup . It is still considered an annus mirabilis in the history of Celtic Glasgow. With 196 competitive goals, Celtic still sets the record for the most goals scored in a season before FC Barcelona , who scored 190 times in 2011/12. Celtic lost only three competitive games in the entire season: once against FK Vojvodina in the European Cup and twice against Dundee United in the league. Jimmy Johnstone described the Celtic style of play as "like the Dutch speeded-up", comparing it to an accelerated version of Dutch total football .

On the way to the final in Lisbon, Celtic swept FC Zurich and FC Nantes out of the competition in the first two rounds , before they defeated the highly favored FK Vojvodina from Yugoslavia in a tough match 2-1 in the quarter- finals. They played 3-1 at home in Celtic Park against the semi-final opponent FK Dukla Prague and scored 0-0 in the second leg in Prague. Over 15,000 Celtic fans traveled to Portugal for the final against Inter Milan , many of whom had never been abroad. The cost of the flight and ticket was around £ 23, the equivalent of several weekly salaries. In the final, the favored Italians scored the opening goal after just seven minutes. After Renato Cappellini was fouled by Jim Craig , the German referee Kurt Tschenscher decided on a penalty that Sandro Mazzola safely converted. In the further course of the game, Inter withdrew into defense and played in the catenaccio to keep the 1-0. In the 63rd minute of play, Tommy Gemmell was able to score the equalizer. Five minutes before the end of the game, Stevie Chalmers made it 2-1 for Celtic . The Scots kept the ball in their own ranks for the last minutes of the game - until the referee whistled. Thousands of Celtic fans stormed the square after the game. On their return to Glasgow, the players were greeted by 200,000 fans who lined the streets.

“There is not a prouder man on God's Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, but it was the way that we won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football; pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads. "
