Copa México 1968/69

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa MX 1968/69 was the 27th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The tournament began on April 4, 1968 with the matches between Club América and Club León (2-0) and between the CF Atlas and CF Laguna (2-1) and ended with the final held on March 2, 1969 between Cruz Azul and CF Monterrey .

The 16 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1968/69 season were eligible to participate . Cup winners for the first time in their history was the team of the CD Cruz Azul , which also won the championship title and thus the double in the same season .

mode

The tournament began with four preliminary round groups, each of which was assigned four teams. In the group stage, all teams from the same group played against each other twice, with one home right and one away game. The top two in each case qualified for the final round in the knockout system . Both the quarter-finals and the semifinals were played in two-legged matches with one home right each for the two opponents, while the final took place in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City .

Preliminary round

The matches of the round of 16 took place between April 4 and September 1, 1968. The following designation of the groups (with A, B, C and D) is only for the sake of clarity, but otherwise purely arbitrary, as the exact designation of the groups has not been handed down. However, the sorting takes into account that the qualified teams from local groups A and B as well as from groups C and D had to compete against each other in the quarter-finals (group winners against the runner-up in the other group).
