Dalian ( Chinese 大連 市 / 大连 市 , Pinyin Dàlián Shì , W.-G. Talien Shìh ; Japanese Dairen-shi , short: 連 / 连 , Lián ), historically Lüda or Lüta ( 旅大 市 , Lǚdà Shì , Lǚta Shìh ), is a port city in Liaoning Province , China . As one of the 15 sub-provincial cities of the People's Republic , it has an area of 12,574 km² and around 6.69 million inhabitants (2010), of which 3,902,467 (2010) are in urban areas. China's northernmost ice-free seaport is located in Dalian.
history
Thanks to its favorable geographical location, Dalian was an important port as early as the 6th century . The Qing Dynasty used the port as a base for their northern fleet, which went down in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894.
The city came under Russian rule from 1897 to 1905 through leasing and also had many Russian and Western and Central European residents who came with them. In Russian times the city was called Dalni (from dalni , Russian дальний for far , because of its location in the Far East ) and was one of the endpoints of the Trans-Siberian Railway along with Vladivostok .
After the Russo-Japanese War , the port city came under Japanese control from 1905 to 1945 and was named Dairen ( Japanese大連 市, Dairen-shi ). After the Second World War , the city was first jointly administered by China and the Soviet Union , and returned to China in 1955.
The city experienced an upswing through the construction of the Transmanjurian Railway through Harbin in the north and the construction of a connecting link.
In 1950 it was combined with Lüshunkou (outdated: Lüshun or Port Arthur ) and Jinzhou ( 金 州 ) to Lǚdà ( 旅大 ; from Lü shun and Da lian), which was renamed again in Dalian in 1981.

According to a study from 2014, the greater Dalian area has a gross domestic product of 198.8 billion US dollars (KKB). Dalian has been a special economic zone since 1984 .
