Deadpool is an American action film with satirical elements. The comic adaptation is based on the comic character Deadpool from the Marvel publishing house.

Directed by Tim Miller. The script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Produced by Simon Kinberg , Lauren Shuler Donner and Ryan Reynolds . Reynolds also starred in the film. Ed Skrein , Morena Baccarin , Brianna Hildebrand , Gina Carano and TJ Miller can be seen in supporting roles . The film music was composed by the Dutch film composer Junkie XL .

It is the eighth part of the X-Men film series . The film opened in German cinemas on February 11, 2016.

action

The film begins in the middle of the plot with an action scene in which Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, fights heavily armed gangsters under the leadership of the mutant Francis. In a flashback , Wilson tells his story.

The cynical former Special Forces member Wilson keeps his head above water with mercenary jobs . These are so dangerous that his friend Weasel has set up a "Deadpool" in his favorite bar, where you can bet on the next dead mercenary. It was there that Wilson met the prostitute Vanessa, and the two became a couple. Shortly after he proposed to her, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer that had already affected several organs. Without Vanessa's knowledge, he undergoes treatment in a secret laboratory whose operators have promised him healing and superpowers. On site, however, he learns from Francis, the head of the facility, who calls himself Ajax, is superhumanly strong and no longer feels pain, that the test subjects can indeed develop strength, but are broken and docile to the highest bidder as slaves to be sold. Francis injects Wilson with a substance and tortures him until it activates his mutant genes in connection with the release of adrenaline through torture. Finally, Wilson's mutant powers awaken and give him incredible self-healing abilities that defeat his cancer, but disfigure his whole body. Wilson escapes by causing an explosion that sets the laboratory on fire. Francis overpowers Wilson in a duel in the inferno of flames, but leaves him there. Thanks to his new powers, Wilson survived the fire and was able to free himself from the ruins of the fire. Since he does not trust Vanessa because of his disfigurement, he dedicates himself to his vendetta . He adopts the name Deadpool and tries to force Francis to give him back his old look.

After a year, he finally introduces Francis, and the plot reaches the present. He attacks the gangsters on the highway and causes traffic chaos. This in turn calls the two X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead on the scene, who try to convince him of his good side. Francis seizes the opportunity and runs away. Colossus tries to drag the stubborn Deadpool to Professor X, but Deadpool escapes by cutting off his hand.

Now that Francis knows that Wilson is still alive and on his heels, he kidnaps Vanessa. Deadpool, whose hand has now completely grown back, goes to the X-Mansion to ask Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead for help. Together they go to Francis' shelter, where he is already waiting with the mutant Angel Dust and his henchmen. Ultimately, Deadpool frees Vanessa. When he asks Francis to reverse his mutation, Francis mocks him by saying that he will remain disfigured forever because he cannot. The prospect of it was the only reason to keep him alive, which is why Wilson ultimately shoots him. In the end, Wilson reveals himself to his Vanessa, and the two get back together.

The film satirizes the genre of superhero films in many scenes . In the opening credits , neither actors nor those responsible are named by name, but mocked as overpaid and unimportant, or their roles are clichéd. Deadpool knows details about the cast's casting and budget, and there have been many swipes at the careers of lead actor Ryan Reynolds and Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman . In addition, Deadpool doesn't take himself very seriously in the film. As in his comic book template, he knows that he is a fictional character and regularly addresses the audience directly, breaking through the fourth wall .

production

In 2004, New Line Cinema was planning a film adaptation of Deadpool with David S. Goyer as director and Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. But the plans stalled due to the contract situation with Marvel Studios . When Goyer turned to other projects, a film version was finally put on hold. In 2005 20th Century Fox signaled an interest in a film adaptation and so the film rights were given to 20th Century Fox. In 2009 it was announced that Lauren Shuler Donner would act as a producer. Donner announced that Deadpool would ignore X-Men Origins: Wolverine , in which Reynolds also played Wade Wilson, in order to be able to realize a comic-like implementation. In January 2010, the scriptwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were commissioned to create a script. The position of director was initially offered to Robert Rodriguez . A script had been sent to him by 20th Century Fox. But Rodriguez 'work on Spy Kids - All the time in the world thwarted this project. In April 2011, the creative director Tim Miller was hired as a director. For Miller it is the feature film directorial debut. After the flop of the comic book adaptation Green Lantern, also starring Ryan Reynolds, in the summer of 2011, the implementation of the project was questioned.

In an interview in February 2014, Lauren Shuler Donner stated that a budget of around 50 million US dollars is planned for the realization of the film. According to Donner, you can save a lot of CGI costs in Deadpool , since you don't have to stage several characters using computer technology.

On July 28, 2014, video test material with Reynolds from 2012 appeared on the Internet from an unknown source. Due to the positive reactions to the test material, the studio decided in early September to actually shoot the film. The release date of the film was announced as February 12, 2016.

In October 2014, producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that Deadpool would be part of the X-Men film franchise. On March 31, 2015, Ryan Reynolds announced that the film would receive a high age rating, in the USA an R-Rating . According to Rhett Reese, the first version of the script called for a PG-13 rating. Only after years of interventions was the film allowed to be shot with an R rating.

On October 4, 2015, Grammy- nominated Dutch composer Tom Holkenborg , better known by his stage name Junkie XL , announced that he was responsible for the film's score . On November 3, 2015, Tim Miller confirmed that Deadpool would break the Fourth Wall in the film . Miller commented: "Not only does Deadpool know he's got an audience, he also knows he's being played by Ryan Reynolds."

occupation

The cast at San Diego Comic-Con 2015

In December 2014 it was confirmed that Ryan Reynolds would slip back into the role of Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. In January 2015, Ed Skrein was confirmed in the role of villain Ajax and TJ Miller as the barman Weasel . In February 2015, Gina Carano as Angel Dust and Morena Baccarin as the partner of Wade Wilson Vanessa joined the cast. Taylor Schilling was also considered for the role of Vanessa . It was also revealed that the largely unknown actress Brianna Hildebrand will cast the role of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who is a mutant with telepathic abilities in the comics but is a living explosive device in the film.

The role of Colossus should be taken over by Daniel Cudmore again, as in X-Men 2 , X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Future is Past . He declined, however, because his voice should be dubbed to give the character a Russian accent like in the original. Instead, the filmmakers created an almost entirely computer-animated character. Here borrowed Stefan Kapičić his facial expressions the figure his voice, Greg LaSalle, TJ Storm served as the model for the movements and the stuntman Andre Tricoteux was during the shooting in front of the camera.

Marvel legend Stan Lee and Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld can be seen in cameos in the film. Stan Lee is a speaker and DJ in a strip club .

Filming in Vancouver

Shooting began on March 23, 2015 in Vancouver , Canada and ended on May 29, 2015. Shooting took place for two weeks on the Georgie Viaduct, a central overpass in Vancouver. Re-shoots took place on November 6, 2015 with Reynolds in Vancouver.

marketing

In July 2015, the trailer was shown for the first time at the San Diego Comic-Con International in the presence of the actors. It received a standing ovation from the audience present and was played again a few minutes later at the request of the audience. The trailer also received mostly positive reactions in the press. The critics particularly praised the humor and the vulgar language. After Reynolds had announced that the trailer would be published on the Internet in August, a red band trailer and a green band trailer that was suitable for children, shortened by 17 seconds , were finally released on August 4, 2015 .

Comic book template and pop culture references

  • Deadpool's inventor Rob Liefeld is referenced several times in the film. In the opening credits a coffee mug with the name "Rob L." flies through the air, and in the "Dead Pool" in Weasels Bar his name is on the list of mercenaries whose death can be bet. Liefeld himself has a cameo as a mercenary in the bar and is also approached by Wilson. Fabian Nicieza , who assisted Liefeld, can be found as a street sign with the inscription "Nicieza St.".
  • Stan Lee , who co-created the entire Marvel universe, made a cameo as a DJ in a strip club, which amused him very much.
  • The film essentially adopts Deadpool's comic origin story, in which the young Canadian Wade Wilson becomes terminally ill with cancer, makes himself available for questionable military experiments and develops fabulous self-healing powers, which however disfigure his whole body and cost his mind. Other points from the original comics have been changed: in the comics, Vanessa is a mutant named Copycat and a member of the X-Force, Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a telepath, Weasel is a technical genius, and Blind Al is a white woman - in the film Vanessa is a normal woman, Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a living explosive device, Weasel is an ordinary bartender and Blind Al is an African-American woman. The superhuman strong and sturdy villains Ajax (Francis Freeman) and Angel Dust were taken over essentially unchanged. Cameo appearances have Deadpool's sidekick Bob as the opposing mercenary, whom he spared because of their shared past, and Deadpool's colleague Marrow, who grows bones out of their backs.
  • Negasonic Teenage Warhead's name is inspired by the song of the same name (1995) by the heavy metal band Monster Magnet .
  • As in the comics, the fourth wall is often broken through. In one scene, Deadpool asks if X-Men founder Professor X is " Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy, " referring to the two actors who played this cartoon character in the X-Men films.
  • The opening credits show a film poster for the film Green Lantern , in which the main actor Ryan Reynolds played the superhero of the same name. When he is brought into the test laboratory, Wilson demands, if he gets a superhero suit, not to make it green and animated - also a reference to Green Lantern .
  • Wolverine and his actor Hugh Jackman are often satirized . Several times Deadpool pulls out a People magazine depicting Jackman as the Sexiest Man Alive - Jackman won this award in 2008. In the final scene, Deadpool literally staples a Jackman mask on his face to hide his ulcers from Vanessa. In the comics, Deadpool and Wolverine share a lot in common: Both are mutants from Canada and both have the same powers (superhuman self-healing). Just like Jackman, Reynolds was voted Sexiest Man Alive by People (2010).
  • In a post-credits scene, Deadpool can be seen in a striped dressing gown in a bedroom hallway with a floral wallpaper. This is a parody of the post-credits scene in the movie Ferris Goes Blue (Ferris Bueller often breaks the Fourth Wall there, just like Deadpool). He pokes fun at the viewers expecting a cameo from Samuel L. Jackson , which has featured in many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films . He finally announced that Cable (with whom he appeared in the Marvel comic series Cable & Deadpool , among others ) will appear in the sequel.
  • Deadpool first appeared in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine ; he was already played by Ryan Reynolds there, where his mouth was sewn shut at the end of the film. As an allusion to this, Wade Wilson is threatened with the same thing in the experimental laboratory of this film.

reception

Reviews

Andreas Borcholte praises the film on Spiegel Online as a “mixture of geek comedy and heroic spectacle” that “works amazingly well”, attests to it a “courage to absurdity” rare in the Marvel cosmos and describes it as a “lovingly decorated gift for fans ". For Dietmar Dath from the FAZ, on the other hand, Deadpool has "had an interesting accident" and "an orgy of partly disarmingly good, partly devastatingly bad ideas", but describes the cast as first-class, with "too little space" to "play out their gifts".

Christian Horn at Filmstarts.de describes the film as "a self-reflective and provocative, naughty and extremely entertaining comic adaptation with a controversial hero who seems almost exotic in the army of the usual varnished supermen."

Gross profit

On the opening weekend (Friday to Monday), which was extended to four days by Presidents' Day , the film grossed 150 million US dollars in North America and a further 132.1 million US dollars internationally. The film exceeded the conservative expectations of 20th Century Fox , which had expected a result of 60 to 65 million US dollars for the opening weekend in North America, by over 100%. The US result represented the best start for an R-rated film at the time. It was also the most successful start for the 20th Century Fox studio and the best start for a film in the traditionally weak month of February. By the end of April 2016, the film grossed over $ 760 million worldwide. In the US alone, the film grossed over 360 million US dollars, making it (even adjusted for inflation) one of the most successful Marvel films. In addition, it was ranked 6th among the most successful Marvel films. Worldwide it even overtook the previously most successful X-Men film X-Men: The Future is Past (748 million US dollars). However, the latter had taken over 115 million in China . However, Deadpool will not be released in China. The reason for this is the depiction of violence and nude scenes as well as the vulgar language.

In Germany it was able to attract over 2.5 million visitors to the cinemas. This makes it one of the most successful comic adaptations in this country too. For example, the Avengers: Age of Ultron had 2.42 million moviegoers a year earlier. In 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy had almost 1.8 million viewers and the last X-Men film had 1.16 million.

Deadpool is currently number 98 in the list of the world's most successful films of all time (as of August 8, 2020).

Awards

  • Silver Bogey : for more than 2 million visitors in 20 days and Bogey for more than 1,000 spectators per copy on the starting weekend in Germany.
  • MTV Movie Awards 2016 : Best Comedy Act (Reynolds), Best Fight Scene - Deadpool (Reynolds) vs. Ajax (Skrein)
  • Teen Choice Awards 2016 : Choice Movie: Action, Choice Movie: Hissy Fit (Reynolds)
  • Golden Globe Awards 2017 : Nominations for Best Picture - Comedy / Musical and Best Actor - Comedy / Musical (Reynolds)

continuation

In September 2015, Simon Kinberg announced that a sequel to the film was in development. On April 14, 2016, 20th Century Fox studio announced that director Tim Miller and lead actor Ryan Reynolds would return for the Deadpool sequel, which will again be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. In the Deadpool post-credit scene , it is announced that the character Nathan Summers / Cable will be one of the main characters in Deadpool 2 . In October 2016, Deadline.com reported that Tim Miller was leaving production due to creative differences with Reynolds. In November 2016 it was announced that David Leitch (co-director of John Wick ) would direct Deadpool 2 and a third part with another director is planned. In March 2017, the first new addition to the cast of Deadpool 2 was announced with Zazie Beetz in the role of Domino . The film was released in German cinemas on May 17, 2018.

While filming Deadpool 2 , stunt woman Joi Harris was killed in a motorcycle accident. Harris was hired as a double for the actress Zazie Beetz, who embodies the character Domino.
