The 2003/04 season was the ECHL's 16th regular season . The 31 teams completed 72 matches each in the regular season . The regular season's team with the highest points were the San Diego Gulls , while the Idaho Steelheads won their first ever Kelly Cup in the play-offs . The league was significantly increased due to the dissolution of the West Coast Hockey League and expanded to the west, so that the name of the league was officially changed from East Coast Hockey League to the abbreviation ECHL. In addition, however, five teams from the ECHL stopped playing.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Arkansas RiverBlades stopped the game.
- The Baton Rouge Kingfish stopped playing.
- The Jackson Bandits stopped playing.
- The Lexington Men O'War ceased gaming.
- The Richmond Renegades stopped gaming.
- The Anchorage Aces from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team and changed their name to Alaska Aces.
- The Bakersfield Condors from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Fresno Falcons from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Idaho Steelheads from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Long Beach Ice Dogs from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The San Diego Gulls from the disbanded West Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Gwinnett Gladiators were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Las Vegas Wranglers were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Texas Wildcatters were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Pee Dee Pride changed their name to Florence Pride for this season.
