Edward Lee "Ed" Jones (born February 23, 1951 in Jackson , Tennessee , USA ; nickname : Too Tall ) is a former American football player in the National Football League (NFL). He played as the defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys .

College career

Jones attended high school in his hometown . After graduating from high school, he studied at Tennessee State University , where he played basketball and American football. After two years of college , he only played for his college football team . He owes his nickname to his height of 206 cm.

Ed Jones was first drafted in the first round in 1974 by the Dallas Cowboys . The cowboys were trained by defense specialist Tom Landry , who was assisted by former defensive tackle and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Ernie Stautner as an assistant coach for the team's defense . The Cowboys team had one of the most formidable defenses in the NFL. It went down in NFL history as the "Doomsday Defense" . Jones was able to fit seamlessly into the team's defense, which already featured players like Bob Lilly , Ralph Neely and Harvey Martin . In his second year with the Dallas team, Jones was able to establish himself as a starter . In the same year he moved with the team in the Super Bowl . The Super Bowl X was lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers at 17:21. Jones was used as a starter.

In the 1977 season, the Cowboys could then prevail in Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos with 27:10. Again Jones ran in the regular formation of the Cowboys. The following year Jones made his third Super Bowl entry. However, the Steelers were able to prevail again against the Cowboys, they won Super Bowl XIII with 35:31.

After the game round in 1978, Jones retired from football and became a professional boxer. As a heavyweight boxer, he fought mostly against young boxers, but was also able to defeat the Mexican heavyweight champion Fernando Montes by knockout . After a year as a boxer, he returned to the cowboys.

In 1989 Too Tall Jones ended his playing career. He was able to move into the play-offs ten times with his team . Jones played 224 times for the Cowboys, 203 of them as a starter. He is the record holder for the Texas football team. Like Bill Bates and Mark Tuinei , he played for the Cowboys for 15 years. With his 106 sacks he is third on the Dallas Cowboys best list.

Honors

Ed Jones was voted All-Pro five times and played three times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season.

Too Tall Jones has already appeared in smaller film and television roles during his career and has appeared in television shows, e.g. B. in A Terribly Nice Family (Season 6, Episode 15 - The Commercial ).
