European Cup Winners' Cup 1996/97

The 1997/98 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 38th edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 47 club teams took part, including 32 national cup winners and 15 defeated cup finalists (Betis Sevilla, FC Luzern, Lewski-1913 Sofia, FC Dinamo Batumi, NK Zagreb, FC Dinaburg, US Luxembourg, Hibernians Paola, HB Tórshavn, FK Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje, FC National Bucharest, NK Primorje, Budapest VSC, ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar and Cwmbran Town). The defending champions and Spanish Cup winners FC Barcelona had also become Spain's runner-up and qualified for the UEFA Champions League . But cup finalist Betis Sevilla steppedon. There was no representative from Albania this season.

DFB Cup winner VfB Stuttgart from Germany, ÖFB Cup winner SK Sturm Graz from Austria , Cup finalist FC Luzern from Switzerland and Cup winner FC Balzers from Liechtenstein competed .

The final in the Råsundastadion in Solna (near Stockholm) won the FC Chelsea 1-0 against VfB Stuttgart. Chelsea FC won its second title in this competition after 1971 .

The top scorer was the Belgian Pasquale Luiso from Vicenza Calcio with 8 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.

The first legs took place from August 13th to 15th, the second legs on August 27th / 28th. August 1997.
