The cup competition began with the first main round, in which 15 district cup winners, 29 GDR league players and the two league relegated teams from the 1966/67 season participated. There were five district cup winners there, with the exception of Empor Neustrelitz all reserve teams of the upper division representatives.
Games that did not produce a winner even after extra time were repeated on the opponent's place. In the 17th competition there were a noticeably high number of repetitions due to six extended encounters.

None of the district cup winners made it through. In addition to Meiningen, Vorwärts Stralsund and Energie Cottbus had also reached the round of 16, but only the Stralsund team came under the last eight thanks to a 3-2 win after extra time over Wismut Aue . Cup defender Sachsenring Zwickau was also represented there, while finalist Hansa Rostock was eliminated in the round of 16. For Zwickau and Stralsund, however, the quarter-finals were the end of the line. In the semifinals, both the later GDR champions FC Carl Zeiss Jena (via Lok Leipzig) and 1. Course of the game
30th game second: The Union defense does not bring a high input in front of their goal consistently enough under control, the Jena center forward Krauss smashes the ball from the 16-meter space with a touchdown in the right corner of the goal.
FC Carl Zeiss Jena seemed to live up to its favorite roles. He went into the 17th final as the sovereign champion of the just ended 1967/68 season, while 1. FC Union Berlin had just saved itself from relegation from the league. But to everyone's surprise, the Berliners put away the early deficit and took over the game with increasing duration. They developed a fighting spirit and running strength and thus brought the Thuringians out of rhythm. FC Carl Zeiss did not find their usual playful unity, their midfield was unable to shape their own game. Union trainer Schwenzfeier had given his director Prüfke the task of dealing directly with his counterpart Roland Ducke, and the Berliner consistently fulfilled his assignment. He became the ruler of midfield and repeatedly used his own strikers with precise passes. Jena's attackers despaired of the now secure opposing defense, which was excellently organized by Wruck.
29th minute: It is probably the key scene of the game. The Berlin striker Hoge hits a high ball into the Jena penalty area, Jenas Brunner goes under the flank and reflexively holds the ball in front of the goal with his hand. Uentz turned the penalty kick into the right corner with a half-high shot.
Jena was shocked, nothing came together. In the 41st minute, Stoppok had the Berlin lead on the foot, but failed because of the Jena goalkeeper. Even after the half-time break, the action did not change, led by their pushy Uentz, the Berliners pushed again and again with dangerous counterattacks in front of the Jena gate, in front of which there was a completely holey defense. The Berlin lead to 2-1 in the 63rd minute was well deserved. Quest got hold of the ball that had ricocheted off the Jena defense and was carried there by Prüfke with a long shot. With his first shot on goal he got stuck on goalkeeper Blochwitz, but came a second time to the leather, which he could now transport into the empty goal. FC Carl Zeiss did not give up, but could not overcome its weaknesses and simply could not find its own thread. Although they still came together for a furious final offensive and now put the Berlin defense under considerable pressure, they could no longer be overcome with the great save goalkeeper Ignaczak in the back.
This is how the coaches saw the game:
“We achieved the big hit not only thanks to fighting, but also with playful means, especially in the first half. In the second half our counterattack brought Jena into serious trouble. Excellent how the quick goal conceded by my team was digested. ”(Werner Schwenzfeier, Union)
“ The first goal seemed poison for our team. The belief in the favorite position was only reinforced. Inevitably crept probably an underestimation of the enemy on "(Georg Buschner, Jena) -. Deutsches Sport Echo 10 June 1968
